Sacraments of Baptism, Communion, and Confirmation. Parents
attend a Pre-Jordan meeting prior to baptism, which is arranged
at a mutually convenient time.

Our teacher would ask: Who
was the 16th President of the United
States? Kids in my sixth grade
classroom would shout out a variety of
names from the obvious to the
ridiculous. Ultimately, a proud student would exclaim
“Abraham Lincoln.” The student would fill with pride as
the teacher would shrug his/her shoulders over the
disparity of class responses. Lincoln was a man I admired
from my earliest days. He was a stately man, a selfeducated and self-made man, a strong family man, a great
leader, and the president who served the country at just the
right time and preserved the fragile union of these United
States.
If you take a close biblical look at the motley crew
that Jesus assembled, those 12 hand-selected Apostles
(Peter being their appointed leader), that should assure
you of the undeniable presence of the Holy Spirit within
the life and ministry of the Church. They were simple
tradesman, sinners, tax collectors, ambitious operators,
turncoats, and moral character disappointments who
would later become saints. Most of whom, with the
exception of St. John, are recorded to have been martyred
for practicing their faith. Yet, with the word and example
of Christ to serve as a lamp for their feet, the faith and the
followers of Christ have endured for over 2,000 years.
Lincoln and our Savior lived in a time of great challenge
and adversity. Yet, they held in together, despite the tumult
of life’s inevitable stormy seas. They recognized that there
could be great unity within the diversity. Both worked
tirelessly, knowing that our Heavenly Father would bless
the work of their hands. We remember their contributions
with love and reverence as we honor their legacy.
It will be my prayer that I can look to the person
of Christ, St. Peter the Apostle, St. John Neumann, and
inspiring leaders like Abraham Lincoln to guide the steps
of this parish family. When you visit the Lincoln memorial
in Washington, DC, you see him sitting in a chair with his
large hands hanging over a bound bundle of wooden
twigs. The twigs represent the states and they are loosely
tied by a thin ribbon; but it is his hands that are
responsible for holding them all together. Our parish
community is made up of Black, Latin/Spanish, Filipino,
Asian, African, Caribbean, and Anglo/European
backgrounds. I very much look forward to asking the Lord
to journey with us as he did in the boat with the Apostles.
We too are likely to encounter the occasional rough
waters. Yet, I know that Christ will awaken confident sleep
and once again calm our fears and anxieties and lead us to
the calm and safety of peaceful waters. I look forward to
pulling together to host all of the many pilgrims who will
visit our beautiful city, Shrine, Church in September. I ask
you to consider volunteering to help serve the needs of
your fellow parishioners/pilgrims with the gift of your
time and talent. By holding tight, hand-in-hand, to our
brothers and sisters, we may exemplify the union and unity
that persevered in the early church, and as Ss. Peter &
Paul saw the communal diversity as one of their greatest
assets. Jesus is certainly with us in our journey. The boat
is getting underway and he has taken a cushion in the
back. Therefore, we… like Christ… remain steadfast in
faith. All Aboard !!!

purchased now and brought to the Mass on the
Parkway to be blessed by the Holy Father, Pope
Francis.

Nuestro
maestro
preguntaría:
¿Quién fue el 16to Presidente de los
Estados Unidos? Los niños en mi clase
de sexto grado gritarían una variedad de
nombres desde lo obvio a lo ridículo.
Ultimadamente, un estudiante con mucho
orgullo exclamaría “Abram Lincoln” El estudiante se llenaría
de orgullo mientras el maestro encogería sus hombros sobre la
disparidad de respuestas de la clase. Lincoln fue un hombre a
quien admiré desde temprana edad. Él fue un gran hombre,
educado por sí mismo e independientemente exitoso, un
hombre fuerte de familia, un gran líder, y el presidente quien
sirvió a la nación en el momento preciso y preservó la unión
frágil de estos Estados Unidos.
Si tomas una mirada bíblica al diverso grupo que
Jesús reunió, aquellos especialmente escogidos 12 Apóstoles
(siendo Pedro el líder designado), que te asegurarían de la
indiscutible presencia del Espíritu Santo en la vida y
ministerio de la Iglesia. Ellos eran simples comerciantes,
pecadores, cobradores de impuestos, operadores ambiciosos,
convenencieros y una decepción de carácter moral, quienes
luego se convertirían en santos. La mayoría de los cuales, con
la excepción de San Juan, han sido documentados como que
fueron martirizados por practicar su fe. Además, con la
palabra y ejemplo de Cristo de servir como una lámpara para
sus pies, la fe y los seguidores de Cristo han perdurado por
más de 2000 años. Lincoln y Nuestro Salvador vivieron en un
tiempo de gran reto y adversidad. Sin embargo, ellos
permanecieron juntos, a pesar del inevitable caos de los
tormentosos mares de la vida. Ellos reconocieron que puede
haber gran unidad en la diversidad. Ambos trabajaron
incansablemente, sabiendo que nuestro Padre Celestial
bendeciría la obra de sus manos.
Recordamos sus
contribuciones con amor y reverencia cuando honramos su
legado.
Mi oración será que yo pueda mirar a la persona de
Cristo, San Pedro el Apóstol, San Juan Neumann y a líderes
como Abram Lincoln para guiar los pasos de ésta familia
parroquial. Cuando tú visitas el Memorial de Lincoln en
Washinton, DC, tú lo ves sentado en una silla con sus manos
sobre un bulto de ramas de madera atadas. Las ramas
representan los estados y estas están ligeramente atadas por
una cinta estrecha; pero son sus manos las responsables de
sostenerlas todas juntas. Nuestra comunidad parroquial se
compone de antecedentes de Negros, Latinos/Hispanos,
Filipinos Asiáticos, Africanos, Caribeños y Anglo/Europeos. Y
espero pedirle al Señor que viaje con nosotros como Él lo hizo
en el barco con los apóstoles.
Nosotros también
probablemente encontraremos aguas turbulentas.
Sin
embargo, yo sé que Cristo despertará del sueño seguro y una
vez más calmará nuestros miedos y ansiedades y nos llevará a
la calma y la seguridad de aguas tranquilas. Espero que
unamos nuestras fuerzas para acoger a todos los peregrinos
que visitarán nuestra bella ciudad y la Iglesia y el santuario en
Septiembre. Les pido que consideren ser voluntarios para
ayudar a servir las necesidades de sus hermanos feligreses/
peregrinos con el don de su tiempo y talento. Sujetándonos
firmemente, mano a mano, a nuestros hermanos y hermanas,
nosotros podamos ser ejemplo de la unión y unidad que
perseveró en la iglesia primitiva, y como los santos Pedro y
Pablo vieron la diversidad de la comunidad como uno de sus
grandes recursos. Ciertamente, Jesús está con nosotros en
nuestra jornada. El barco va en marcha y Jesús ha tomado
una almohada en la parte de atrás. Por lo tanto, nosotros…
como Cristo…nos mantenemos firmes en la fe. ¡¡¡Todos a
bordo!!!
