305 Bishop's House, Baruipur P.O., Kolkata - 700 144, India SEPTEMBER 2014 Devotion to Mary, Our Mother F east of the Nativity of Our Lady celebrated on September 8, is popular all over India. In many places it known as the feast of Vellankanni, Our Lady of Health. At Bandra in Mumbai, in Goa, in Vasai, in Mangalore and Udupi dioceses, it is celebrated in a big way as the harvest festival. In our diocese of late it has spread to all most all the parishes as a popular devotion. I have seen and experienced that this popular devotion is very effective. Therefore this occasion is made use for Evangelization the Good News of Jesus Christ could be proclaimed better. Pope Francis, in his recent apostolic exhortation Evangelii Gaudium says, “Popular piety enables us to see how the faith, once received, becomes embodied in culture and is constantly passed on. Once looked down upon, popular piety came to be appreciated once more in the decades following the Council. In the Exhortation Evangelii Nunciandi, Pope Paul VI gave a decisive impulse in this area. There he stated that popular piety “manifests a thirst God which only the poor and the simple can know and that it makes people capable of generosity and sacrifice even to the point of heroism, when it is a question of bearing witness to belief.” (123) I am reminded of a 12th century legend from France. A wandering minstrel once joined the Abbey of Monks of Clairvoux. Tired of the world, he sought peace within the monastery walls; but he, soon, realized that he was illsuited for the life of a monk. He could neither read nor write, and was not of much use with his hands. Watching the other monks so committed to work and prayer, he began to feel depressed. Early one morning, while the monks were at prayer, the minstrel crept secretly in to the church crypt. There he discovered a statue of Our Lady seated on her throne. He gazed at her loveliness and felt hurt that he had done nothing to show her his love. He remembered one craft of which he was master, and decided to perform for her. Quickly slipping off his long robe, he began to dance and tumble and leap before her in the way he had done all his life. He staged all the acrobatic tricks that he knew and begged Mary to accept them as a token of his love. He repeated his performance daily. One day a monk found him at his tumbling and went in haste to fetch the Abbot. They stole silently into the vault and watched the performance from behind the pillar, till the minstrel fell exhausted to the ground. Then they could hardly believe their eye as they saw Our Lady herself come down from her throne to wipe his hot perspiring brow and to thank him for his work of devotion and love. In whatever way it be, our heavenly Mother appreciates our love and devotion to her so that we are able to see Jesus her son more clearly, love Him more dearly and follow him, like His mother, more nearly. + Salvadore Lobo Vianney Day Celebration in Keorapukur K eorapukur parish has celebrated the festival of John Mary Vianney on 4th August, 2014 by the parishioners.
