To lead the development of mission, discipleship and ministry on behalf
of the Bishop as a member of the Bishop’s Leadership Team
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Develop discipleship across the diocese in partnership with clergy and other providers.
2. Engage with deaneries and parishes to support local church development and to facilitate
the implementation of Deanery Development Plans.
3. Take a full part in the Bishop’s Leadership Team, connecting the work and thinking of the
DRT. Attend the Bishop’s meeting of Area Deans and Lay Chairs. Attend meetings of the
Diocesan Synod and Bishop’s Council.
4. Lead the Diocesan Resource Team in achieving diocesan priorities and responding to the
needs of parishes, deaneries and deanery plans.
4.1 Ensure that the DRT practices imaginative theological reflection and models collaborative
working.
4.2 Develop and oversee team arrangements to support the officers and administrative staff
of the DRT (this will include developing arrangements for 1-1 meetings, supervision,
annual appraisal, intermediate reviews, training and development).
4.3 Regularly review the progress of the DRT, monitoring outcomes, efficiency and
effectiveness, and report to Bishop’s Council as requested.
5. Oversee ministerial development so that it furthers personal discipleship and the mission of
the church in the Diocese of Durham.
5.1 Oversee the Clergy Ministerial Development Review process, liaising with the Bishop,
Bishop’s Chaplain and reviewers, including monitoring clergy training needs arising from
MDRs.
6. Serve as Canon Missioner and Canon Residentiary of Durham Cathedral
6.1 Hold responsibility for the Cathedral’s programmes of mission and outreach.

6.2 Engage fully with the liturgical life of the Cathedral as a residentiary canon including
undertaking the duties of Close Residency (a week or a fortnight at a time for up to 10
weeks a year).
6.3 Be a full member of the Cathedral Chapter and the Chorister School Governing Body.
7. Other duties
7.1 Monitor budgetary progress during the year, maintain sound financial management, and
participate in the budget setting process.
7.2 Liaise closely with Diocesan Secretary in his overall responsibility for the running of the
Diocesan Office.
7.3 Any other duties reasonably required by the Diocesan Bishop.
CONTACTS/RELATIONSHIPS:
Working closely and collaboratively
– in the Diocese with Bishops and Archdeacons, Diocesan Secretary, other members of the
Bishop’s Leadership Team, Chair of the DBF, Area Deans, Lay Chairs, the officers of the
Board of Education and the Principal and tutors of the Lindisfarne Regional Training
Partnership, and Deanery Pastoral Committees.
– in the Cathedral with members of the Cathedral Chapter, staff, volunteers and key
external partners.
Supervision of DRT Officers and Advisers and line management of Administrative Team Leader.
Liaison with volunteers supporting local development work.
Contact with Deanery officers, and members of Deanery Pastoral Committees, and with Parish
clergy and, from time to time, PCCs and parishioners.
Contact with senior clergy and officers in Newcastle and other Dioceses and in the National Church
Institutions, and in other denominations in the region.
RESOURCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Management responsibility for all staff of the Team.
Recruitment and support of volunteers.

Overall responsibility for the Team’s budget. Personal expenses.

The person appointed will:

be a priest of the Church of England, a member church of the Anglican Communion, or of a
church in full communion with the Church of England, who has been in priest’s orders for
at least 6 years;

unreservedly committed to the mutual flourishing of all ministry across the Church of
England;

have exercised a leadership role in the church, whether as a parish incumbent, in a diocese
or cathedral, or in some other capacity;

be a ‘mission-shaped’ person of prayer, theologically articulate, a stimulating and
intelligent preacher, committed to his or her own personal, professional and spiritual
development;

as a team leader, regard team working as the norm, and have proven skills in team
leadership and the oversight of colleagues accountable to him or her;

as a team member, regard team working as the norm, and have proven skills in it;

have good pastoral skills, will lead by example, will be an effective communicator, and will
value and relate naturally to people of every kind;

be committed to the work of adult and children’s Christian formation and education with
some experience in this field, whether in the secular or church setting;

have knowledge and understanding of significant contemporary thinking and writing about
missiology;

be excited by the potential for cathedrals in mission, value the ethos of cathedral liturgy,
and endorse the quest for excellence in every aspect of the ministry of Durham Cathedral;

be competent in the management of a budget;

be at home with digital technology and have a basic working knowledge of ICT and social
media.
