TORAH THOUGHT:
If we do our math, the Jewish nation received the Torah over 3500 years ago. A long time!
We are able to count the days of a week to get to Shabbos because that is the same for
everyone, but Shmittah? Every 7th year, the Jewish people in Israel do not work in the
fields, yet there is such an abundance of food in the 6th year, that it lasts for three whole
years. If you look at the history books of the Land of Israel, you will see a desolate area
with no growth potential. During our long exile it was a wasteland. Since Jews have
returned, however, and for the past 66 years the land is now lush and fertile. It produces
amazing fruits and vegetation. Perhaps the State is Israel is more than just a State. It is a
land of Kedusha and Brachot. Shmittah may be one of the MOST difficult mitzvah's in the
Torah, but it can also yield some of the greatest rewards. Have a totally awesome
Shabbos!
POINT TO PONDER:
The Torah says that when a person sells their land forever, it is returned to the owner at
the Yovel year that arrives once every fifty years. In Tehillim we are told that a complete
life is 70 years. Shouldn't the land rights be at least that long?
UPCOMING YOUTH EVENTS
May 25, 2014: Join us for a (hopefully) gorgeous afternoon as the Detroit Tigers host the
Texas Rangers at Comerica Park (Free Poster). Then come back to the shul for a picnic BBQ
dinner! Families are welcome. $20 a person. If you are unable to come to the game, but
want to join us at the picnic BBQ, $5 a person.
June 8, 2014: Join us for our end of the year event at YIS from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm as we
host illusionists, magicians, ventriloquists and Face/Tattoo painters. See our advertisement
in the May edition of the Community Links!
**The YIS Youth Department reminds parents who place their children in Shabbat Groups
that they ensure that the children (age appropriate) know that they are to remain there
until a parent picks them up. Children unsupervised in the hallways lead to damage and
injury.
Youth Safety: We have partnered with a Michigan based safety company to offer reflective
safety vests for a below cost of $8.00 per vest. They normally retail for more than $10.00.
Protect yourselves and your children at night or in difficult-to-see environments, while
making a donation to our youth program. Order at [email protected]
Parents are reminded to watch your children on the play structures to ensure their safety,
as the Shul assumes no responsibility for their actions.
Also, please clean up with your children any leftover trash both outside and inside!

Nashim and to study it together as a family unit. A special BBQ Siyum will be
held during the afternoon on the second day of Shavuot celebrating our
community learning. Please select a sefer or a mishna tractate on the bulletin
board. Each family participating in the learning is kindly asked to share one
thought or message from their studies. We will break up into several smaller
groups to share the Divrei Torah with one another. Please RSVP to the Shul office
with the number of family members attending the Siyum. There is no cost to
attend. You do not have to be participating in the learning to attend the Siyum.
yis member spotlight-Each week another family unit will be highlighted
Chaya and Joey Selesny - Daniel (14), Ariella (12), Avi (8) Sara and Bayla (Bella) are 2.
After living on the other side of Southfield and attending Young Israel of Oak Park for 13
years, Chaya and Joey decided to move their family to the Young Israel of Southfield
community 2 1/2 years ago. Joey was born and raised at YIS and is proud to be part of the
shul his parents helped found. Chaya grew up in Memphis, TN and moved to YIS with her
family when she was 16 years old. Joey is the Regional Director of the American Technion
Society and is active with the Jewish Federation and Chessed Shel Emes where he is on the
board and has been member of the Chevra Kadisha for many years. Chaya is a Clinical Social
Worker/Therapist with a private practice and volunteers with Federation. Joey and Chaya
feel privileged to be a part of the YIS family, and feel so grateful to all the help and support
they have received from the shul these past two years. They have a tremendous amount of
Hakaras Hatov to everyone for helping them celebrate the birth of Sara Bracha and Bayla
Rena, the Bar Mitzvah of Daniel, and hope that everyone will join them in celebrating
Ariella's Bas Mitzvah at an open house at their home on Shabbos Parshas Bamidbar on May
24th/24th of Iyar from 5:30 to 7:30 PM. “May we all only celebrate smachos together.”
