BT Students Recognized by Carson Scholars Program
By: Jenny R. ‘14, Communications Intern
Three Beth Tfiloh students were
recognized by the Carson Scholars
Fund for their academic achievements
and service to their communities.
Alex R. ’16, a first-time winner this
year, received a $1,000 scholarship
towards his college education. Harley
F. ’16 and Rebecca M. ’17 have
both been previously awarded the
scholarship and were recognized by
the foundation for their continued
excellence and humanitarian efforts.
The organization was started by
Dr. Ben Carson, a world-famous
neurosurgeon and humanitarian,
and his wife, Candy. Winners of the
award receive a scholarship, an award
package, and a chance to go to an
awards ceremony dinner.
All three BT award recipients are
heavily involved not only in the

Beth Tfiloh community, but also the
Baltimore community, and the world
at-large. Alex is the co-treasurer
of the National Honor Society
at Beth Tfiloh, the captain of the
Junior Varsity Boys’ Soccer team, a
member of AIPAC, co-founder of the
Investment Club, and the co-regional
director for the New York Region in
America Eats for Israel. Outside of
BT, he volunteers at the KIPP School,
where he is a Junior Board Member.
He is also a STAC Fellow (Students
Taking Action for Change) through
The Associated. Additionally, he is
the founding co-head of the Ashkelon
Medical Services Fundraising Initiative,
raising money for emergency medical
trauma equipment in Ashkelon. In
his free time, he sings in the Hazamir
Choir of Baltimore and plays guitar.
Harley is a member of Habitat for
Humanity through BT, sings in both
Kolenu—BT’s a cappella choir—as
well as Beth Tfiloh’s new Chamber
Choir. She participates in the Winter
Musicals at Beth Tfiloh and also sings
with Hazamir. She has volunteered
at both Goldsmith Early Childhood
Education Center Summer Program,
and at a community arts studio, where
she taught arts to children. She is
compiling a cookbook for children,
which she plans to publish and donate
the proceeds to a Jewish charity for
kids and the Make-a-Wish foundation.
Rebecca is also active in Habitat
for Humanity at Beth Tfiloh, as well
as Kolenu and BT’s Winter Musicals.

Continued from page 7
we were totally shocked and extremely
honored. We know how Mrs. Schorr
puts her heart and soul into Beth Tfiloh,
and who could say “no” to her?”
“We are grateful for all that Beth
Tfiloh has done for our family, and we
appreciate how fortunate we have been
to be able to send our children here,” expresses Jay. “We would like to help give
other children the same opportunity.”
“One of the most significant strengths
of Beth Tfiloh School is its diversity of
Jewish students,” says Jay. “Having a
student body comprised of Orthodox,
Conservative and Reform Jews enabled
our children to get a more encompassing
perspective.” It’s that cohesive community that makes BT so special, and is,
according to the Chasons, one of BT’s
greatest strengths. “Beth Tfiloh – both
the School and the Congregation – is
very welcoming, and offers opportunities for everyone to get involved.” And
that community is especially good at
taking care of its members. “Yad b’Yad is
a great example of this!” Natalie comments.
The Chason children are very proud
of their parents for taking on this vital
leadership role. Says Eric, “I know my
parents will do an excellent job and I am
happy for both of them, as they have
the opportunity to give back to a school
that means so much to our family.”
Aly conveys the importance of this
role. “There are so many people who
need financial assistance, and they
should be able to receive it. It’s very
valuable for students to get a Jewish education, [which makes] this event very
important,” said Aly.
Natalie and Jay agree with their
daughter completely. It’s not just BT’s
Scholarship Fund on the line here… it’s
Jewish continuity itself that is at stake.
“Our children are our future – we understand the importance of providing a
Jewish day school education to as many
children as possible to help perpetuate
the Jewish religion.”

Join us in celebrating our 10th year!
On Wednesday, May 7th, 2014
you can help feed Israel’s needy.
And all you have to do is EAT!
On Wednesday, May 7th, 2014 restaurants across the United States
and Canada will join together in donating 10% of their gross revenue to American Friends of Meir Panim (AFMP). AFMP is a nonprofit
organization dedicated to supporting programs in Israel that provide daily hot, nourishing meals and social services to children and
adults across Israel and from all backgrounds including Holocaust
survivors, victims of terror and new immigrants. This innovative
project is now in its tenth year! Initiated by students of Yeshivat
Rambam of Baltimore, it is now spearheaded by students of Beth
Tfiloh Dahan Community School. Students across North America
are collaborating in this effort. Through their dedication the program has grown from a local initiative to an international success.
More than 100 kosher restaurants participated last year. With your
help, this year will be the best yet!
