Looking back at the 8th PPM and forward to 2015!
We would like to thank you for the amazing support you have provided to the 8th Prague Patchwork
Meeting. Thanks to you, we have grown a little bit more – not only by area and other numbers, but
mainly in terms of quality. Truly outstanding were the pieces that have entered the Application
competition this year. It has not been an easy task for the jury, every single entry has received at least
one point. However, we had a clear winner – Nocturno by Mrs. Milada Kankrlikova. We are proud
that we can present you the profile of this extraordinary Czech author (page 4).
Mother Nature has been a core theme for Mrs. Jaroslava Grycova over many years. You had the
chance to admire her work within sole exhibitions. This year, she has charmed the jury and claimed
victory in the challenge. We will be presenting you more winners in the upcoming issues of the
Newsletter, including the winner of the Visitors Choice – Roses from Venus by Mrs. Dana Richterova,
mainly her precise quilting that has charmed so many of you.
The visitors have noticed large number of changes – different retailers location, new stalls as well as the
traditional participants, sometimes in new roles. You all know Mrs. Anka Zimova that has presented
herself as an author this time with her small gallery.
The international collections and profile galleries have once again reminded us what the extent of textile
art possibilities is, letting us peak into the world of new techniques. I am sure that next year, we will
witness a small gallery of quilts that came out of the two day workshop of Pia Welsch. We should not
forget about the highly inspirational mini formats by ABC Quilters or the Boredom collection. I have
personally enjoyed the Great Britain and Denmark selections and all visitors loved the SAQA collection
presented in Prague.

I would like to say a big thank you to all Czech quilters. An incredible experience was the collection of
Vera Skockova. Art Quilt Club has presented the awaited collection LINEN, showing an incredible
amount of variations. The collection has moved to MFC in Hlinsko straight after PPM, where it has
been admired by hundreds of visitors. The quilts will continue their journey throughout Fulnek and will
be displayed within the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham.
In case you did not have the chance to see the show or did not manage to take all the pictures, you can
buy our CD with majority of the displayed collections. Please write us at
[email protected] for more information.
As soon as the event closed, we have started preparing the 9th PPM that will take place between the 10th12th April 2015.
And the main topics? We have chosen Architecture as the theme for the creative challenge (no
technique constraints, size 80 to 150cm). The traditional quilters will surely welcome the technique of
Grandmothers Garden (80 to 200cm each side). The compulsory material for the Art Quilt Club
members will be fur and leather, the compulsory format is 80-100cm x 80-100cm.
And our guests? We will present them one by one, but I am pleased to announce that our star
guests will be Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably that will return to Prague. Outside a textile
workshop, we will be hosting a knitting one for the first time in PPM history.
We are looking forward to seeing you in Prague next year!
We would like to congratulate our Facebook winners Hana Uhríková a Jitka Uherová for
sending us the best PPM experience!

Winner of the competition Application
I have already written a bit about myself couple years ago. It was shortly after I won one of the
competitions in the 6th Prague Patchwork Meeting (quilt called Window to the Autumn Garden).
There is only one thing that I have not yet mentioned and that has a huge impact on my work. I am
from Ostrava, a very industrial region, but have been living in near Sumava mountains for nearly 30
years, yet I am still charmed by the nature.
As soon as I heard that the topic for the 2014 traditional challenge is Application I knew that it is my
kind of theme. I was thinking “come up with something you love, leaves, blossoms, paper piecing,
application, leafy fabrics, symmetry, precision..,”. I still prefer to work with pen and paper rather than
computer programs, so the first idea was drafted on a paper. Twelve triangles, from which I aimed to
create a border around a central square. I have intended to make three paper pieced flowers in each of
the triangles and a mixture of stems and leaves coming out of them. The truth is that this was not the
only quilt I have been working
on last year, but when I had only
those 12 triangles in November
2013, after 6 months of work and
I had no clue about the central
part, my daughter said: “Mum,
you can never finish this on
time” and she started to place the
triangles next to each other and
assemble a quilt. It did not look
too bad after all. All of a sudden,
the only thing missing was a
border and final assembly.
One of the most challenging
moments was to quilt the whole
quilt on my Janome 6600.
My quilt is called Nokturno,
which is a name for a lyrical
piano play. My quilt also has not
drama or stroy, just something
pleasant (just like music)...
I am glad that my work has been
awarded and am very grateful for
the price.

Hobby spices up your life..... without one,
life is grey and boring
ANKA ZIMOVÁ
Creativity is passion......
I was born many years ago in a picturesque valley, enclosed by high mountains in the north of Slovakia. Wild
and beautiful nature, proud mountain peaks, open, direct and honest people and a large, embracing and loving
family – those are the treasures I have been gifted when born.
I have started to knit and embroider when I was 8 years old, I completed my first knitted sweater on an old
machine when I was 10 and have received my own knitting machine in the age of 13, in exchange for the
promise that I will earn the money back by selling the finished products. There were literally hundreds of them
and I have also been knitting in hand, even at high school during classes. The teachers were not pleased, but I
had the feeling that I have to make full use of my time. I had more and more ideas in my head…. Sewing,
knitting, embroidery and other techniques were both pleasure and necessity as the shops were empty and
clothes lacked originality. So my first earnings went into buying a machine – I have it until today! It is like a
close friend that understands me without speaking a word.
My three big passions: math, physics and creativity influenced my choice of studies. I have graduated from the
Faculty of Architecture in Bratislava university and the Slovak capital became my home.
The velvet revolution in 1989 has brought new possibilities to Slovakia. I have set up my first business in 1990,
right after my daughter was borne, and have been faithful to sewing machines and appliances for the last 23
years. The original name of my company “KM-trend” has changed to Patchworkparty in 2008, when I added a
wide range of assortment for quilting and patchwork to my retail activities and started to run workshops.

ANKA ZIMOVÁ
Back in 1995, my Austrian colleagues tried to explain me what patchwork is. No chance! I had no clue! Why
would I cut the fabrics into pieces just to put them again? That made no sense to me.
I do understand now. I know what it is all about. The fabrics talk to you, they change, adopt and adjust to your
fantasies. One is discovering their secrets, transforming them and giving them new life. I wish I could transfer
all of my ideas into fabrics, uncover all the secrets.
Patchwork is like a children game, a puzzle. You are creating something new, building up a story. The creative
process comprises joy and peace. One does dive into these warm and welcoming materials as new ideas emerge
in the head, representing your dreams, ideas and wishes…. We are looking for the unknown, expressing the
abstract ideas and we keep on searching… searching for the meaing of life, harmony and positive thoughts, the
new world, world full of sun, joy and happiness. These are the thoughts I am trying to put into every product I
am creating, to make me and those around me happy.
I am wishing you a lot of joy and happiness while quilting!
Prajem Vám pri šití Vašich výrobkov veľa – veľa kreatívnych nápadov a radosti !
