17 September 2014 Meeting Minutes Universal City Citizens Police Academy Alumni Association Universal City Public Works Service Building Sign-In The meeting was called to order at 1830 hours. Pledge of Allegiance The pledge was led by Claude Kucinskis. Confirm Quorum There were 24 members in attendance. Twenty members are needed for a quorum. Detective Anthony Nolden was also in attendance. Approval of the August 2014 Meeting Minutes August Meeting Minutes were sent out via e-mail by Laurie Hancock. A motion to approve was made by Jerry Skrocki. The motion was seconded by Ed Sheeran. The motion was unanimously approved. Approval of August 2014 Financial Statement The August Financial Statement was sent out via e-mail by Paul Najarian. A motion to approve was made by Ed Sheeran. The motion was seconded by John Buchwitz. The motion was unanimously approved. Guest Speaker Ed Sheeran introduced Brent Mosher, Executive Director of Financial Crimes Investigation and Recovery at USAA. Brent gave us some very interesting facts and stories. He has 37 years experience in this field, including 23 years with the FBI. He gave us details concerning fraud prevention including: Writing of bad checks Hacking of small and large retail stores ID theft Phishing Terrorist financing Data Mining Social Engineering Human Trafficking Credit and debit card fraud There were many questions and answers. The members thanked Mr. Mosher. CPA Details How many residences are there in U.C.? Answer: 8,650 How many neighborhoods are there in U.C.? Answer: 41 What percentage of these neighborhoods participate in NNO and/or NW? Answer: 50% Old Business Saxet Gun Show At the gun show on September 6th and 7th, only 46 tickets were sold. We need to sell 100 tickets to cover the cost of the gun. Members who helped sell in September were thanked. They were Don Casey, Elfi Koehle, Ed Sheeran, Gary Stein and Don Wilkinson. Heroes Walk / First Responders The walk was held on September 11, 2014. The UCPD had a last minute request for members to help with traffic control. The following members stepped up and were thanked: Katherine Arcos, Helen Gaston, Pat Kline, George Stevenson, Martha Stevenson, and Diane Tennison. Also, thanks were given to Kris England, Clarence Johnson and Janet McClure for distributing crime prevention information to attendees. New Business Fall Gun Raffle We are not having much luck selling raffle tickets for the Kahr PM9093. The Saxet Gun Show has decided that we cannot sell there in the month of October. We do not know if we will be able to sell at the November or December shows. Details are to follow. Sparks Firearms gun shop has not sold any tickets that we know of. The VFW and/or American Legion could be sales avenues to be pursued. The drawing for the gun will be on 10 December. NNO There will be a Block Captain Get-Together on September 18 to visit with the officers and tour the PD. There will also be a question and answer period. Kris England sent around a sign-up sheet to get names of people that are interested in riding along in police caravans at NNO. A driver, photographer and extra Alumni are needed for each caravan. She still needs drivers and two people to portray McGruff. There will be five caravans. Contact Kris (658-1216) if you are interested in helping. Blue Santa This police program is getting geared up again. Tom Ingle is in charge of the project. Letters asking for donations have been sent out to businesses. Alumni distribute, and then, collect applications from families interested in receiving gifts for their children. The applications process will start in October. A list of eligible kids needs to be done by December. A raffle (with Tony Snyder’s and Interstate Batteries help) will be held at Mr. Gatti’s on December 19. Members are encouraged to eat at Mr. Gatti’s as a percentage of the evening’s dinner sales are donated to Blue Santa. Volunteers are needed to shop, wrap and help Blue Santa carry the presents that are to be delivered. The delivery date is TBA, but should be close to December 20. Tom will send out an e-mail asking anyone who is interested in participating to contact him. New Ride-Along Policy Anyone wishing to ride-along with the officers on their shift must now take the TCIC / NCIC class that is being held at the PD on September 25. Riders must also be fingerprinted. This will be done at four different times in the week following the class. Members that are taking the TCIC/NCIC class can sign up for fingerprinting at the class. If members want to wait, they can attend the TCIC / NCIC class that will now begin to be taught at the 2015 CPA class. Board Member Nominations for 2015 Don Casey volunteered to assist in obtaining nominations for next year’s board. If you are interested in serving on the Board, please contact Don. The names will be announced at the October meeting. The actual election will be held at the November meeting, with installation of officers at the December meeting. Police Report – Det. Anthony Nolden Det. Nolden gave us some details on cases that the UCPD is working on. These include: Car burglaries Eighteen of these offenses occurred in Meadow Oaks in one night. The suspect was arrested. The police had video of him that was taken by an observant resident. Possible child abuse An employee of NE Methodist hospital was reported talking to people about his alleged child abuse/child pornography. If something like this happens to you, please report it the UCPD Home burglary A burglary occurred at a home on Tumblebrook, even though the owners were at home. Entrance was gained through a partially open garage door. Always secure your house and garage. The members thanked Anthony. Any Other New Business No new other business was brought up. Next Monthly Meeting Date October 15, 2014 at the UC Public Works Service Building. Meeting starts at 1830 hours. Meeting Adjournment A motion to adjourn was made by Gary Stein.
