TWENTY-FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
From the desk of Monsignor Charles J. Parry
It was a pleasure this past week to host once again the
annual Crab, Shrimp and Chicken Dinner as a means of
honoring and thanking the many volunteers of the parish. This
has been an event that I have always enjoyed not only for the
crabs but also, and more importantly, because it gives me the
opportunity to personally thank many of those who assist in
the various works of the parish on a volunteer basis throughout
the year. There were nearly 160 volunteers present, and this
doesn’t include those who for various reasons were unable to
attend.
Sacred Heart parish is well known in the archdiocese for
many good reasons - and one has always been the outstanding
spirit of volunteerism evident in our community. In the parish
Service Opportunities booklet, there are over 30 different ways
to offer volunteer service to the parish and to the local
community. This does not take into account a host of
additional requests that are made to our parishioners
throughout the year. Somehow almost every base is covered
when and how it needs to be. Again, I am most grateful to each
of you for giving of your time and talent as it is needed to
assist with the many volunteer efforts of the parish and of the
community.
In another week, on September 29th at the Bowie Golf and
Country Club, the parish will host the 12th annual Monsignor
John F. Hogan Memorial Scholarship Golf Tournament.
Besides having a great time on the golf course, the proceeds of
this event are utilized as Catholic secondary school
scholarships for our own high school students. In the current
school year just underway, Sacred Heart is able to provide
scholarships in the amount of $25,000.00 to parishioners
attending a Catholic secondary school. Our Catholic schools
work diligently to assist parents as the primary educator of
their children. I am very please that a parish like ours is able to
provide needed financial assistance to our parishioners in the
form of scholarships. Many parishes are unable to provide for
parishioners in this way, but we are able to do it thanks to your
generosity!
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, Have Mercy On Us!
