Celebrating Our 125th Anniversary

Celebrating Our 125th Anniversary
Deadline Approaching for 125 Works of Art Contest
Something to
Celebrate. .
In celebration of Sacred Heart’s 125th
Anniversary, the hospital has planned several
events to bring our community together.
Among them is a 125 Works of Art contest
that challenges participants to create a piece
of art based on these five anniversary-themed
categories: Faith, Hope, Light, Joy, or any
combination of the four.
So far, Sacred Heart has distributed nearly
150 canvases. Pictured on the cover are the
first three entries to be turned in, but with the
submission deadline quickly approaching, all
who have participated are reminded to submit
their artwork and entry form to the hospital’s
information desk by 5 pm on Monday, September
8. The top 125 works of art will be displayed
at the hospital — with a total of $2,000 being
awarded between the top two entries from each
category, as well as best in show.
...and you’re ALL invited!

EMERGENCY RESPONSE
Hands-Only CPR Training Offered for Colleagues
Beginning in October and continuing
through December, Sacred Heart’s
Organizational Learning Department
will offer Hands-Only CPR to hospital
staff (clinical or non-clinical) who
are not already CPR certified. The
goal is to have 100% of hospital staff
either CPR certified or familiar with
Hands-Only CPR. This training will
also cover AED usage, how to call a code in the hospital, and how to notify
emergency services outside the hospital.
Conducted by Peggy Pendergast of Organizational Learning, the training
will take approximately 20-30 minutes. Directors will be asked to contact
Organizational Learning to set up a time for training during one of their
department meetings. After which, each colleague will receive their own
Hands-Only CPR kit so they can practice and then take home to share what
they’ve learned with family or friends. Each kit, funded through the Friends
of Sacred Heart, contains a blow up manikin and instructional DVD.
If you are unable to attend the scheduled department meeting, this training
will be available on two Saturdays in January 2015 — when family
and friends are welcome to attend. If you have any questions about this
training, please contact Organizational Learning by calling 715-717-4265.
And the Winner is…
Hand Hygiene Video Contest Winner Named
A few months ago, Sacred Heart Hospital challenged its colleagues to film
a short, creative video about good hand hygiene. The results have been
tallied and the contest winner has been named.
The hospital is pleased to announce that the winning entry came from
Ricky Bell of Environmental Services, along with Dan Abramczak of
Nutrition Services. Filmed by Shanna Miller of Environmental Services, the
video depicts an old western stand-off between two germ-fighting bandits.
The video can be viewed on the main page of the hospital’s intranet.
Thank you to all who participated!

process.”
Lindsay joined Sacred Heart in 2006 as a staff nurse and has held several positions
within the hospital’s Orthopedics/Surgical department since then. She has served as the
Interim Director of the department since May. Lindsay is planning to pursue her master’s

Phe-mom-enon”...
This year’s featured guest - mom, comedian,
author and Texas native Anita Renfroe - has
just one goal when she gets up in front of
a crowd of women: to make them laugh.
“Laughter is a great democratizer,” she
says. “Women get this idea that their life
is different from everyone else’s. But when
we can all laugh about the same things, we
suddenly get the sense that
our lives can’t be that
different. Plus, when
you’re laughing, your
immune system gets
a big boost.”

MISSION OUTREACH
Fellowship Program
Day 4
Exploring the Seeds of
TRUE SELF
Exploreing Important Life & Vocational Questions
Connecting to Our Franciscan
Heritage & Mission
On May 12, a group of 10
colleagues from Sacred Heart
and St. Joseph’s hospitals
embarked on an exciting
journey to the Chiara Center in
Springfield, IL, to participate
in the second annual Larry
Mathews Mission Outreach
Fellowship Program. Each
issue of Spirit will feature
an article following the
group during one of their
adventures.
Day 4 was bitter sweet for the group, as they would be
leaving the following morning. After breakfast and Mass
with the Sisters, they met with Sister Renita (pictured
above), who is the director of the Chiara Center and holds
a master’s degree in Franciscan studies. The information
she shared about Saints Francis and Clare of Assisi was
very inspiring. Francis and Clare offered compassion and
healing — much like Jesus did.
As hospital colleagues we learn of Francis being the son
of a wealthy cloth merchant (Pietro) and how he left the
comforts of his wealth and home to care for the lepers
banished outside the walls of Assisi. What we didn’t know
is that Francis’ father tried to convince him to come back
home and take his rightful place within the family. Francis
refused, and he and his father never spoke again.
Another influential woman in Francis’ life was Jacoba.
After the death of Jacoba’s husband, she befriended
Francis. It is said that when Francis was on his death
bed, Jacoba came to see him even though women were
not permitted to enter the friary. So when his followers
told him she was there they wondered what to do. Francis
answered, “Show ‘brother Jacoba’ in.”
The time the group spent with Sister Renita was exciting
— and they all felt a better connection to our Franciscan
heritage and mission.
Join the Healing Place on September 18, from 6 to 9 pm, to explore
important life and vocational questions. There is a great paradox in
autumn: while it is a season of decline, it is also a time in which seeds
are being scattered — seeds that bring new growth in spring. This miniretreat will engage you in poetry, stories, wisdom traditions, nature and
hands-on activities. Embark on a journey to explore your inner self.
This retreat, based on the work of Parker Palmer from the Center of
Courage and Renewal, will be led by Laurie Hittman, PhD, and Mary
Peters, MSE. Both Laurie and Mary have been trained as Courage and
Renewal Facilitators through the Center for Courage and Renewal, which
is based in Seattle, WA.
The program will take place at The Healing Place, 1010 Oakridge Drive
in Eau Claire. The program is free of charge, but advance registration is
required by September 11 by calling (715) 717-6028.

Certifications, Licensing & Registration Requirements Policy
Qualification standards for certain positions require that a colleague achieve and
maintain a specific professional certification, licensure, and/or registration. All
colleagues who fall under one of these qualification standards must have a current
license, registration, or certification at all times.
People Services will verify through the appropriate agency that certification,
licensure and/or registration are current at the time of hire and upon expiration.
If the primary source verification is not current for a colleague, the manager will
be notified and the colleague removed from the work schedule until certification,
licensure and/or registration is active.
More information regarding this policy can be found
under Colleague Handbook Policies — located in
the Policies and Procedures section of the People
Services page of the hospital’s intranet. If you have
any additional questions, please discuss it with your
supervisor or call People Services at 715-717-4246.
