Hence, as soon as anyone of the faithful begins to be in danger of death from sickness or old age, the fitting time for him to receive this sacrament has certainly already arrived. A Letter from Our Cathedral Rector Dear Parishioners, Some weeks ago I asked three staff members - Andrea Diaz, Susan Pietro and Jen Pitera - to collaborate with Deacon Doug Bogart to address some particular challenges in our infant baptism program, while simultaneously making parents and godparents feel welcome when they inquire about baptizing their children here at the Cathedral. So, you can imagine my delight when this team came back to me with an ingenious fine-tuning of our program that includes:  A short series of classes*, beginning with the first class led by a priest or deacon  The objective of this first class is to welcome and to encourage the child’s parents and godparents to embrace the fullness of the gift that Jesus offers them through his Church  In the subsequent class(es) the catechetical team more thoroughly addresses the theology of the Sacrament as well as the responsibilities of parents and godparents.  Several consecutive “liturgical” points of contact with the parish    A welcome at Sunday Mass the weekend before the baptism The baptism itself the afternoon of the following Sunday A “presentation” of the newly baptized children to the parish community at Mass the Sunday following the baptism Every parish has unique challenges to face when it comes to infant baptisms, including, but not limited to: questions of parish membership; Church requirements for godparents; scheduling; ensuring proper catechesis; etc. Our team created a plan to address the challenges head-on while simultaneously highlighting the joy of baptism for the individual families as well as our larger parish and Church family. I am truly grateful to the team and, having taught the first class in the series once already, delighted for our children and families. In fact, another parish has already heard about what we are doing and has asked us to advise them about their baptism program! Oh...and one more thing! For those of you who are expecting your first child... THE TIME TO START BAPTISM PREPARATION IS WHEN MOM IS PREGNANT! As the Catechism states: The Lord himself affirms that Baptism is necessary for salvation. He also commands his disciples to proclaim the Gospel to all nations and to baptize them...The Church does not know of any means other than Baptism that assures entry into eternal beatitude; this is why she takes care not to neglect the mission she has received from the Lord to see that all who can be baptized are “reborn of water and the Spirit.” God has bound salvation to the sacrament of Baptism, but he himself is not bound by his sacraments. (Paragraph 1257) So, it makes the most sense for first-time parents to begin the classes during pregnancy so that the baptism can take place as soon as possible after your child is born. VINCENT DE PAUL In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus explains the meaning of the scriptures. Like the disciples, when we offer and receive forgiveness, our hearts burn because we encounter the risen Christ within us. When we drop food into the SVDP Food Boxes in the rear of the Church or drop our coins into the Poor Box, our hearts may also burn with love for the Lord and his mercy, love and blessings to us as we do his work of caring for our poor and needy brothers and sisters. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is always in need of items such as peanut butter, cereal, tuna, canned meat, beans and rice, canned beans or chili, mac and cheese, spaghetti and spaghetti sauce. Also, we always need toilet paper. Thank you and great gratitude are extended to the students, teachers and staff for the Lenten food drive held in our school. Our hearts were burning with love as you filled our shelves with wonderful cans of food. Spring is a time of hope and new plans. FRIENDS of the Cathedral is busy doing just that. We would like to give you an update of what has taken place over the past several months as well as what is in the works for the future. We are pleased to report that our board of directors is growing and reaching out further around our diocese. In February of this year we met with Bishop Olmsted to review our accomplishments over the past year as well as our plans for the coming year. As always, our focus is on promoting the identity of our cathedral around the Diocese of Phoenix, educating the faithful about the role of a cathedral, and supporting our cathedral financially. As you probably know, our annual golf tournament is the primary source of income which allows us to accomplish these goals. This year’s tournament will once again be held at the beautiful JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa on September 25, 2015. This year we are planning some exciting new things. A portion of our proceeds will go to the Vocations Office of the Diocese of Phoenix to help promote new vocations in our diocese. El Papa Francisco proclamó 2015 Año de la Vida Consagrada, a partir del primer domingo de Adviento, el fin de semana del 29 de noviembre de 2014, y terminando el 2 de febrero de 2016, la Jornada Mundial de la Vida Consagrada. La Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Estados Unidos (USCCB) Comisión de Clero, la Vida Consagrada y las Vocaciones está promoviendo "Los días con religiosas" iniciativas y recursos para ayudar a las familias a aprender acerca de la vida consagrada de los religiosos y religiosas. Simón y Judas Consejo Catedral 12708 vuelve a ofrecer su beca anual a un Estudiante Grado octavo graduarse que planea continuar su educación en una escuela secundaria católica en la Diócesis de Phoenix. Es una beca de $2,000.00 por pagar en $500.00 por año durante cuatro años.
