THE MASS: PREPARATION OF THE GIFTS, AND
EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
As discussed previously, when we gather for a meal, we begin with the
greetings, then telling of stories and then we are ready for the meal
itself. At Mass, these ritual actions are the Preparation of the Gifts,
the Eucharistic Prayer and the Communion Rite.
Preparation of the Gifts: We are seated. Early on, bread and wine
was brought to the Church to be used for the Mass. Today a monetary
contribution is made for the parish and for the poor. A collection is

DO YOU WANT TO BE PART OF JESUS’ GROUP?
In life we are always called to participate in this or that way for many
different activities, and most often it is our response to that call that makes
our lives much more gratifying (and why not say it) even a bit more
interesting. But once we are in the thick of it we start to notice the
difficulties: We are disillusioned, no longer motivated, we just lose interest,
or there is another activity or project that seems more promising than the
last! Jesus too lived his life in frustration during his time here with his
followers. Sometime we too see this scenario perhaps within our own
family ... Let us all remember that we are all called to serve and few chosen, but the reward at
the end will be eternal.
Next weekend August 29th & 30th, we are all called to be part of a mission of world interest: to
help our Catholic brothers and sisters in need. We are privileged to have a visiting priest India
who will share his experience with us.
Mission projects of the Archdiocese of Madras (India). The Archdiocese of Madras, situated in
the capital of South India. This rural part of the Archdiocese alone has 53 mission parishes, 18
mission schools, 8 homes for children and 4 health care clinics. This region is in need of small
chapels, training, maintenance and transportation for catechists, priests and social workers,
besides other basic Mission needs. Since, Christians account for only 5 Percent of the total
population, a large number of Catholic youngsters get married to non-Christian spouses. A
significant number of these inter-religious marriages breakdown and sadly, separations and
suicide rates are on the increase.
Since the Hindu and Muslim religious groups do not offer
counseling or other family support services, those struggling
in their marriage / family life look to the Parishes for support.
Hence, formation and training of catechists, priests, nuns and
other leaders in marriage/family counseling, offering them
resources and setting up of Spiritual Animation Centers are
some of the urgent need of the archdiocese.
Making Christ known and loved is our priority, even though it is predominantly a nonChristian society. An indirect evangelization in the forms of marriage/family counseling
indeed helps young couples to manage anger, resentments, disappointments and other
negative forces while growing in love, understanding and appreciation of one another. Blessed
Mother Theresa’s style of missionary activities are always accepted and appreciated by the
entire community. The Cathedral of this ancient archdiocese is built on the holy mortal
remains of Saint Thomas, the apostle of Jesus. Madras Archdiocese has given birth so far to 10
Dioceses and Thiruvalluar is next in line.
May God bless and reward you for your support for sowing the seeds of faith and helping the
Archdiocese build the Kingdom of God in this Hindu dominated part of India. Thank you and

Noi abbiamo bisogno di sapere se i nostri impegni
sono seri. Abbiamo bisogno di essere rammentati e
riaffermati. Nella prima lettura, Giosue’, il
successore di Mose’, aveva bisogno di sapere se il
popolo sarebbe rimasto fedele all’Alleanza con il
Signore. Giosue’ li stava portando ad una nuova

Once
again, our parish is hosting a
lunchtime meal for local needy
people on Saturday, 26 September
2015 at St. Mary’s Cathedral on Warren St. This
year we will be feeding hundreds of people soft
drinks, coffee, pencil points, meatballs & tasty cakes
as a dessert. After the meal is completed, each guest is
given a bag lunch to go. Since there are two settings,
one at 11:30AM & one at 12:30PM, much help is
needed to set tables, serve the meals and clean up after
each serving. To volunteer call Vivian Abbott at
291-1890 or Mary Massi at 610-1087 & more
details will be provided. (NOTE) Please help by
donating packages of Tastycakes or similar type
cakes. You can bring them to Mass on the weekend
of September 19 and 20. Your donations are much
needed. This is a great opportunity for our students to
do community service hours.
KEEPING OUR COMMITMENTS
In the musical Fiddler on the Roof,
the husband, Tevye, whose marriage
was arranged years and years before,
wants to know if his wife really loves him. Was their
marriage just an arrangement, a deal? Did his wife,
after all these years, ever love him? Does she still?
We need to know if our loving commitments
stick. We need to be reminded and reaffirmed. In the
first reading, Joshua, Moses’ successor, needed to
know if the people would remain faithful to their
covenant with the Lord. Joshua was going to lead
them to a new life—a settled life. Would they be
faithful?
Jesus, who identified himself as the very life of
his disciples’ life, needed to know: Will you also go
away or will you stay? We do not often see Jesus this
vulnerable. Peter and the apostles chose to stay. What
will we do?

Joshua confronts the tribes of Israel: Will you
desert your covenant with Yahweh? The desertion

QUIERES SER PARTE DEL GRUPO DE JESÚS?
En la vida somos siempre llamados de una u otra manera a participar en
muchas actividades, generalmente ellas mismas son las que hacen nuestra
vida más llevadera, y por qué no decirlo, más interesante. Pero una vez
que estamos dentro, vienen los problemas: Nos desencantamos, nos
desmotivamos, perdemos el interés, o viene otra actividad o proyecto que
parece más alentador que el anterior! Jesús en su vida vivió la misma
frustración en su tiempo con los que le siguieron. Nosotros muchas veces
los vemos quizá al interior de nuestras misma familia…En últimas son
pocos los llamados y escogidos, pero la recompensa al final será eterna.
El próximo fin de semana Augusto 29-30, tendremos la oportunidad de hacer parte de un
interés mundial y misionero: el proyecto de ayuda a nuestros hermanos católicos menos
favorecidos. Seremos privilegiados de tener la visita de un sacerdote que viene de la India y
nos compartirá su experiencia.
Proyecto Misionero de la Arquidiócesis de Madrás, India La Arquidiócesis de Madrás, en es
una diócesis metropolitana católica ubicada en la capital en el sur de la India. Esta parte rural
de la Arquidiócesis tiene 53 parroquias misioneras, 18 escuelas
misioneras, 8 orfanatos y 4 clínicas de salud. Esta región está en
la necesidad de capillas, formación, mantenimiento y transporte
para los catequistas, sacerdotes y trabajadores sociales, además de
otras necesidades básicas. Como los cristianos solo representan el
5 por ciento to la población, muchos de los católicos jóvenes se
casan con alguien que no es cristiano. Una gran cantidad de estos
matrimonios inter-religiosos por desgracia se caen y causan el
aumento de separaciones y de suicidios.
Dado que los hindús y los grupos religiosos musulmanes no ofrecen asesoramiento u otros
servicios de apoyo familiar, los que batallan con sus matrimonios y vida familiar acuden a las
parroquias buscando apoyo. Por lo tanto, la formación y el entrenamiento de los catequistas,
sacerdotes, monjas y otros líderes en consejería de parejas y familias, ofreciéndoles los
recursos y desarrollando centros de animación espiritual son algunos de las necesidades
urgentes de la Arquidiócesis.
Nuestra prioridad es que conozcan y amen a Cristo, a pesar de que es principalmente una
sociedad no cristiana. La evangelización indirecta en formas de consejería de parejas y
familias de hecho ayuda a las parejas jóvenes a poder manejar la ira, resentimientos,
decepciones y otras fuerzas negativas durante su crecimiento en el amor, la comprensión y el
aprecio del prójimo. El estilo de actividades misioneras de la Santísima Madre Teresa siempre
son aceptados y apreciados por toda la comunidad. La Catedral de esta antigua arquidiócesis
está construida sobre los santos restos de Santo Tomás, el apóstol de Jesús. Hasta hoy, la
Arquidiócesis de Madrás ha construido 10 diócesis y Thiruvalluar es el próximo en línea.
Que Dios los bendiga y les pague por su apoyo en sembrar la semilla de fe y por ayudar a que
esta Arquidiócesis pueda construir el Reino de Dios en esta parte dominada por hindús de

En la obra musical El violinista en el
tejado, el esposo, Tevye, cuyo
matrimonio había sido planificado por
otros muchos años atrás, quiere saber si su esposa
de veras lo ama. ¿Fue su matrimonio solamente un
arreglo, un contrato? Después de tantos años,
¿llegó su mujer a quererlo? ¿Lo quiere todavía?
Necesitamos saber si nuestros compromisos
son duraderos. Necesitamos que nos lo recuerden y
reafirmen. En la primera lectura, Josué, el sucesor
de Moisés, necesitaba saber si el pueblo iba a
mantenerse fiel a su alianza con el Señor. Josué iba
a llevarlos a una nueva vida una vida estable.
¿Serían fieles?
Jesús, habiéndose identificado como la fuente de
vida de sus discípulos, necesitaba saber. ¿Ustedes
van a irse también o van a quedarse? Pocas veces
vemos a Jesús tan vulnerable. Pedro y los apóstoles
escogieron quedarse. ¿Qué vamos a hacer
nosotros?

LA MISA: PREPARACION DE LAS OFRENDAS
Y PLEGARIA EUCARISTICA
Como comentábamos anteriormente, cuando nos reunimos para una comida, iniciamos con los saludos,
luego contamos historias y es después cuando estamos listos para la comida. En la misa, estos rituales
son llamados Preparación de las Ofrendas, la Plegaria Eucarística y el Rito de Comunión.
Preparación de las Ofrendas: Sentados. Años atrás, se llevaba pan y vino a la iglesia para ser utilizados
para la misa y para ser donados a los pobres. Hoy en día una contribución monetaria se realiza para la
Parroquia y para los pobres. Se lleva a cabo la colecta de ofrendas y junto con el pan y el vino es
entregado en sacrificio al sacerdote. El sacerdote coloca el pan y el vino sobre la mesa (altar). Mezcla el
agua con el vino y luego lava sus manos para ayudarnos a recordar la Última Cena. Nos ponemos de pie
para participar en la oración central de la misa.
Plegaria Eucarística: De pie. Esta oración nos lleva al centro de nuestra fe – la Consagración. Aunque las
palabras cambian de domingo a domingo, somos llamados al evento central de nuestra religión,
Jesucristo, y en particular al memorial que Él nos dejó la noche antes de morir – la Última Cena.
Recordamos su Pasión, Muerte y Resurrección. Le pedimos a Dios que nos haga un cuerpo y un espíritu
en Cristo. El sacerdote nos pregunta si estamos preparados para venir a la mesa y para renovar nuestra
promesa bautismal ofreciéndonos a Dios, “Levantemos el corazón.” Nosotros respondemos, “Lo
tenemos levantado hacia el Señor.” Somos invitados a dar gracias al Señor nuestro Dios y respondemos,
“Es justo y necesario.” El dar las “gracias” es traducido del griego para darle nombre a esta acción
completa que anticipamos – la Eucaristía. Somos llamados a la presencia de Dios y hablamos sobre lo
maravilloso que Él ha sido con nosotros. La aclamación toma la forma del “Santo, Santo, Santo es el
Señor…. Hosanna en el cielo.” Nos ponemos de rodillas. El sacerdote continúa la oración dando
alabanzas y gracias y pidiéndole al Espíritu Santo que haga el milagro de transformar nuestros dones de
pan y vino en el Cuerpo y Sangre de Cristo. Entonces el sacerdote nos recuerda los eventos de la Última
Cena – la institución de la Eucaristía. En este momento tan importante en la oración, la asamblea
proclama el misterio de nuestra fe. Esta parte toma muchas formas diferentes, por ejemplo:
“Anunciamos tu muerte, proclamamos tu resurrección. ¡Ven Señor, Jesús!” El sacerdote recuerda los
hechos de la salvación – la pasión, muerte y resurrección de Cristo. Oramos por unidad, por la iglesia,
por los vivos y muertos y para que podamos llegar a la mesa en el cielo. El sacerdote levanta el Cuerpo y
Sangre de Cristo y ofrece una oración de gloria a Dios, en el nombre de Cristo: “Por Cristo, con Él y en
Él… “y nosotros respondemos, “Amén.”
