WHAT IS MERCY?
Today we celebrate Divine Mercy Sunday. This Feast was instituted by Pope St. John Paul II in
the Year 2000. His instinct was sound. The people of God have taken this celebration to heart and in
many churches you will find special celebrations to mark the day. St. Joseph’s, Winter Haven are having
their devotions at 3.00p.m. in the Chapel. But what is Mercy? Shakespeare famously tells us: “Mercy
is above this sceptered sway. It is enthronèd in the hearts of kings. It is an attribute to God himself. And
earthly power doth then show likest God’s When mercy seasons justice.”(Merchant of Venice Act IV, I)
What he is telling us is that Mercy is more than an exercise of power, of justice. Power and Justice give
us what we are entitled to; mercy gives us something we can only hope for.
Truthfully speaking, when we feed a starving person we aren’t acting out of mercy, rather out of justice - they have a right to
food simply because they are human beings. We can hardly call the system just where 90% of the world’s goods are owned by 10% of
the people and at the same time millions are starving to death while we have granaries filled with grain that we don’t know what to do
with.
Hosea the prophet saw the injustice in the Israel of his days. He thundered against the exploitation of the poor by the rich under the guise of following the rules. The wealthy had learned how to manipulate the system to their advantage but God, speaking
through Hosea says: “For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.” (Hos. 6.6)
Mercy gives when we have no right to expect anything. So when we think of the Divine Mercy we are very aware that we have
no right to expect anything from God. But through Jesus we have come to see the mercy of God, the infinitely loving mercy which
reaches out to us no matter what we do. Perhaps the perfect expression of God’s mercy is the words of Jesus: “Father, forgive them for
they know not what they do.” (Lk. 23.34) Despite all the horrors that they had inflicted on Him, Jesus still wanted not revenge but pardon for them.
Maybe we need to reflect a little more on our own sinfulness. If we feel that they really isn’t much room for improvement in
our lives, that we’re more or less OK as we are, then we won’t appreciate the depths of God’s mercy towards us. I don’t mean that we
have to beat ourselves up and convince ourselves that we are horrible people but we do need to realize just
how easily we can turn our backs on God without even noticing it.
It’s hard to believe but on this Divine Mercy Sunday the Church proclaims that even people like Osama BinLaden and the leaders of groups like ISIS can receive the mercy of God if only they would turn back to Him.
To us such an idea is utterly unthinkable, but “with God all things are possible.” (Mk. 10.27) That’s exactly
what Divine Mercy Sunday wants us to believe - that God’s mercy towards us surpasses our wildest dreams.
Let’s take a moment to say: “Eternal Father, I offer you the Body and Blood, the Soul and Divinity of your
dearly beloved Son in atonement for our sins, and those of the whole world.” Fr. Robert.
Finally poverty will end and all will have abundant health, education, food, family, friendship
and love.
A question emerges in my thinking about the text of the First Reading of the Second Sunday
of Easter: will the Lord feel ashamed of us? Well, this question is because of the situations that people
live in today in the world; wars, terrorism, hunger, discrimination, poverty, many diseases caused by
the indiscriminate use of natural resources, unequal distribution of wealth in the world, abortion, divorce, interreligious strife, crime and violence are just some of the various problems that humanity is
facing, and the strangest thing is that Jesus already revealed to the world the answer of how to fix it all
with love.
Indeed, God is merciful, and instead of feeling disappointed, He sure feels surprised, seeing that we have everything we need
to be fully happy and still do not accept it. As we run trying to accumulate wealth for retirement, which is not bad, we should accumulate a treasure in heaven, sharing, in the name of love and with a compassionate heart, all the wealth that God has placed in our hands.
Then God will continue looking at us with the same tenderness and compassion as ever, but also with pleasure, as he looked at the first
Christian Communities.
The early Christians kept their hope in the promises contained in the commandments. All are directly invitations to live even
now as citizens of the kingdom, doing good out of love. This love is the evidence of faith in the Risen Christ, who inspires us to do
good without expecting anything in return, just the satisfaction of showing the world, through the promptings of the Spirit, his glory
through the service of others. It is faith accompanied by deeds that testify to it. In the happy hopes of immortality Christ accompanies
us and although we do not see with the eyes of the body, we take a leap of faith reflecting on the content of his message and recognizing the truth of what was handed on to us. Well, listening to His Word, our hearts burn and this makes us think of changing our life
because his message has given us a better place to live by practicing his proposal by living in the love of God and all its implications at
the individual and community level, showing the effect of its transformative power, then showing that it is a true and effective word.
Today God asks us to translate our faith in His Son and in him, into concrete works so that others can see, even in us, a new
more confident life, with more joy and perseverance in good works. So, despite meeting with problems and challenges, and although it
seems that our work does not bear fruit, by faith we leave everything in God's hands, so there may be MERCY FOR ALL and He receives the glory through what we are sowing in the world by our faith, our hope and the joy of our love – by our ministry. Fr. Frank.

SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL: In the Gospel today, Jesus
stands in the midst of us and says: ”Peace be with you!”
During Mass we turn to each other and say “Peace be with you!” As
you put your gift into the St. Vincent de Paul envelope or the Poor box,
you say “Peace be with you!” to those who are poor and hungry.
You can also help by bringing food donations to the Narthex, and
clothing can be dropped off at St. Vincent de Paul (behind St. Ann’s)
on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 12—2:30 pm.

There will be a Divine Mercy Celebration in the
Chapel at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Winter Haven on Sunday, April 12th at 3:00 PM.
Flesh and blood
Catholics believe in the doctrine of transubstantiation—that is, that bread and wine are changed
into the Body and Blood of Christ in the Eucharist. The conversion is not merely symbolic, but
actual, through the power of God. And not just
Body and Blood, but the risen Christ as a whole is
present in the sacrament. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, “The principal fruit
of receiving the Eucharist in Holy Communion is
an intimate union with Christ Jesus.” Don’t forget
that the living Lord is always mysteriously in your
midst.
ADORATION of the BLESSED SACRAMENT: There is Adoration of the blessed
Sacrament from 9:30 AM on Friday with benediction at 5:45 PM.

The Choir and Orchestra of the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Queen of the Universe, will present a concert entitled “A Mother’s Day Bouquet” on Sunday,
May 10th, 2015 at 3:00 PM as part of the Basilica’s annual
Concert Series. Continuing a 20 year old tradition at the Basilica, the concert will take place among 12,000 roses in the
sanctuary which are donated in honor of mothers around the
world and especially Mary, mother of Jesus. Roses will also
be available for purchase during the afternoon. Admission
charge for the concert is $15.00 for adults, under 12 are free.

¿QUÉ ES LA MISERICORDIA?
Hoy celebramos la Divina Misericordia. Esta fiesta fue instituida por el Papa San Juan Pablo II
en el año 2000. Su instinto era real. El pueblo de Dios ha tomado esta celebración con el corazón y en
muchas iglesias encontraremos celebraciones especiales para conmemorar este día. En San José en
Winter Haven las celebraciones empiezan a las 3 en la capilla. Pero ¿Qué es la Misericordia? El famoso Shakespeare nos dice: " …la clemencia está por encima de esa autoridad del cetro; tiene su trono
en los corazones de los reyes; es un atributo de Dios mismo, y el poder terrestre se aproxima tanto como es posible al poder de Dios cuando la clemencia atempera la justicia, Cuando la misericordia gradúa la justicia. "(El mercader de
Venecia Acto IV, I) Lo que nos está diciendo es que la misericordia es más que un ejercicio de poder y de la justicia. Poder y Justicia
nos darán lo que recibimos por derecho; en cambio la misericordia nos da algo que sólo podemos esperar aunque no lo merecemos.
Hablando la verdad, cuando alimentamos a una persona hambrienta, no estamos actuando fuera de la misericordia, en lugar
de la justicia – ya que todos tienen el derecho a la alimentación, simplemente porque son seres humanos. Difícilmente podemos llamar justo el sistema en el que el 90% de los bienes del mundo son de propiedad en un 10% de la gente y al mismo tiempo, millones
de personas están muriendo de hambre mientras tenemos graneros llenos de grano que no sabemos qué hacer con él.
Oseas, el profeta, vio la injusticia en el Israel de sus días. Él denunció en contra de la explotación que los ricos, con el pretexto de seguir las reglas, ejercían sobre los pobres. Los ricos habían aprendido cómo manipular el sistema para su propio beneficio, pero Dios, hablando a través de Oseas dice: "Porque misericordia quiero, y no sacrificio, y conocimiento de Dios más que
holocaustos." (Os 6,6).
La Misericordia lo da todo cuando no tenemos derecho a esperar nada. Así que cuando pensamos en la Divina Misericordia
somos muy conscientes de que no tenemos derecho a esperar nada de Dios. Pero a través de Jesús hemos llegado a ver la misericordia
de Dios, descubrimos que Dios es infinitamente amoroso y su misericordia llega a nosotros, no importa lo que hacemos. Tal vez la
expresión perfecta de la misericordia de Dios es la palabra de Jesús desde la cruz: "Padre, perdónalos porque no saben lo que hacen" (. Lc 23,34) A pesar de todos los horrores que le hacemos, Jesús no quiere venganza, sino perdón para todos.
Tal vez tenemos que reflexionar un poco más sobre nuestro propio pecado. Si sentimos que realmente no hay mucho margen
de lo que tenemos que mejorar en nuestra vida, que estamos más o menos bien, asó como estamos, entonces no vamos a apreciar la
profundidad de la misericordia de Dios hacia nosotros. No quiero decir que tenemos que vencernos a nosotros mismos y convencernos de que somos gente horrible, pero ciertamente, sí tenemos que darnos cuenta de la facilidad con que por nuestra indiferencia podemos darle la espalda a Dios sin siquiera notarlo. Es difícil de creer, pero, en este Domingo de la Misericordia, la Iglesia proclama
que incluso gente como Osama Bin Laden y los líderes de grupos como ISIS pueden recibir la misericordia
de Dios, si sólo se volverían de nuevo a Él. Para nosotros esta idea es totalmente impensable, pero "con
Dios todas las cosas son posibles." (Mc 10,27). Eso es exactamente lo que la Divina Misericordia quiere
hacernos creer - que la misericordia de Dios hacia nosotros supera nuestros sueños más optimistos. Tomemos un momento para decir: "Padre Eterno, te ofrezco el Cuerpo y la Sangre, el Alma y la Divinidad de tu
amadísimo Hijo como propiciación de nuestros pecados y los de todo el mundo." Padre Robert.
San Vicente de Paúl:
En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús está en medio de nosotros y dice; “La paz esté con ustedes.” Durante la misa nos dirigimos el uno al
otro y dice “ la paz sea con contigo! Cuando usted coloca su ofrenda en el sobre de San Vicente de Paúl o en la caja de los pobres, le
está diciendo a los pobres y los hambrientos “ La paz sea con ustedes”.
Por favor considere donar alimentos enlatados para la despensa de San Vicente y traerlos los Domingos dejarlos en el Nártex. Gracias

Por fin se acabará la pobreza y todos tendrán en abundancia salud, educación, alimento, familia, amistad y amor.
Una pregunta emerge de mi pensamiento con el texto de la Primera
Lectura de este Segundo Domingo de Pascua: ¿se sentirá el Señor, avergonzado
de nosotros? Bueno, esta pregunta es a propósito de las situaciones que se viven hoy en día; guerras, terrorismo, hambre, discriminación, pobreza, enfermedades causadas por el uso indiscriminado de los recursos naturales, desigualdad en la distribución de la riqueza del mundo, el aborto, los divorcios,
las luchas interreligiosas, la criminalidad y la violencia, son algunos de los distintos problemas que atraviesa la humanidad, y lo más extraño es que Jesús ya
le reveló al mundo el modo de solucionarlo todo: con amor.
En efecto, Dios es misericordioso, y en lugar de sentirse avergonzado,
seguro que se siente extrañado, al ver que tenemos todo lo que necesitamos
para ser plenamente felices y aun no lo conseguimos. Mientras corremos tratando de acumular riquezas para la vejez, lo cual no
está mal, podríamos acumular un tesoro en el cielo, compartiendo, en nombre del amor y con un corazón misericordioso, toda la
riqueza que Dios ha puesto en nuestras manos. Entonces Dios nos seguirá mirando con la misma ternura y compasión de siempre,
pero además con agrado, como miraba a las primeras comunidades cristianas.
Los primeros cristianos sostenían su esperanza en las promesas contenidas en los mandamientos. Todos son directamente
invitaciones a vivir ya desde ahora como ciudadanos del reino haciendo el bien por amor. Este amor es la evidencia de la fe en
Cristo Resucitado, quien nos inspira a hacer el bien sin esperar nada a cambio, solo la satisfacción de mostrarle al mundo, por
medio del as inspiraciones del Espíritu, su Gloria, en el servicio a los hermanos. Es la fe acompañada de las obras que dan testimonio de ella. En la espera dichosa de la futura inmortalidad Cristo nos acompaña y aunque no lo vemos con los ojos del cuerpo,
damos un salto al vacío de la fe racionalizando el contenido de su mensaje y reconociendo la veracidad de lo que el transmite.
Pues, al escuchar su Palabra, arde nuestro corazón y esto nos hace reflexionar para cambiar de vida porque en su mensaje encontramos una mejor propuesta para vivir, y, al practicar su propuesta de vivir en el amor de Dios y todas sus implicaciones a nivel
individual y comunitario, evidenciando el efecto de su poder transformador, entonces comprobamos que es palabra verdadera y
eficaz.
Hoy Dios nos pide que traduzcamos nuestra fe en su Hijo y en Él, en obras concretas de modo que incluso los demás
puedan notar en nosotros una vida nueva con más confianza, mayor alegría y perseverancia en el buen obrar, de modo que, a pesar de encontrarnos con problemas y desafíos, y aunque pareciera que nuestros trabajos no dan fruto, por la fe, lo dejemos todo en
las manos de Dios, para que haya MISERICORDIA PARA TODOS y Él coseche la gloria de lo que noso-
tros fuimos sembrando por el mundo con nuestra fe, nuestra esperanza y la alegría del amor.
