SEPTEMBER 14, 2014 We the people of the Co-Cathedral of St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, seek to be an example of the presence of God through our Christian Catholic worship, education, service and stewardship of all God’s gifts. We celebrate our diversity of age, culture, language, and view points as a sign of God’s all powerful and ever-present love in our community of faith. We strive to witness the gospel of Jesus Christ to evangelize and to respond in love, as well as compassion to our community in Honolulu, to be a welcoming place to all who seek the grace, fellowship, and love of God. The readings for the Feast of the Exaltation (Triumph) of the Holy Cross invite us to reflect on the meaning of the cross of Jesus. Let me summarize it in five points using the word CROSS. C stands for Christ. The wooden cross by itself has no meaning and power. It is meaningful and powerful for us because of Christ. The Church has always meditated on the story of the bronze serpent hanging on a pole as a foreshadowing (be a sign) of the cross of Jesus. The cross is the summit of God’s overflowing generosity and mercy. (First Reading) R stands for Reconciliation and Redemption. The cross is the instrument of life-giving salvation. Amidst the disobedience of the people of Israel and the continued sinning of humanity, the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross is a perpetual reminder of God’s power to heal, forgive, and save. (First Reading/Gospel) O stands for Obedience. The cross of Jesus reveals to us that the greatest expression of our love for God is obedience to his will. “He humbled himself by being obedient to death, death on the cross.” (Second Reading) Sept 21 | 10:30am Mass - Commissioning of Catechist and Aides (C) S Around the Diocese Catholic Charities Blood Drive Sept 24 | 9:30a - 3:00p at Catholic Charities Hawaii S Bulletin Submissions due 10-days before weekend of distribution: [email protected] stands for Selfless (benevolent) Love. The cross stands for the outpouring of God’s love. In the cross of Jesus, God placed this message: “For God so love the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life.” (Gospel) stands for Sacrifice. The cross is a parable and paradox of God’s unique and mysterious ways. The cross is a lesson of “Kenosis” or self-emptying. (Second Reading) Christians who believed and wear the cross should realize that it is not a mere decoration or ornament to empress others. Believing and wearing the cross should be a badge of readiness to follow the example of Christ in living a life of love and sacrificial service. DAILY SCRIPTURE READINGS SUNDAY’S PRAYER Lord, you showed the depth of your love by accepting suffering and the death on the cross. Give me the grace to follow in your footsteps. Amen.
