We have lots of choices for all ages! Meet Darren! Darren is the Millbrae Library's newest Community Services Librarian. His background in technology, his friendliness, and his enthusiasm to help the community make him a great addition to our staff. Please give Darren a warm Millbrae welcome next time you visit the library! He was nice enough to answer some questions for us; read all about him below! Q: What brought you to the Millbrae Library? A: Well, I started my professional career as an English teacher in Japan and New Jersey before realizing that my passion really lives in libraries and what they offer our communities. I went back to graduate school to become a school media specialist and moved to Portland, Oregon when I finished my degree. There I worked in public, community college and university libraries, as well as a nonprofit devoted to decreasing e-waste and increasing access to technology. My desire, though, was to work in public libraries, where I could use my enthusiasm to find answers and help others with the broadest range of people. Millbrae, and the Bay Area, were incredibly enticing to me for the ethnic and cultural diversity they offer. This library, and San Mateo libraries as well, are amazing because they are willing to try new things to ensure we continue to provide the best possible service to our communities. Q: If you were to be stranded on a deserted island, what library item would you take with you? A: At first I was going to say that I would bring one of the library's e-readers, because they can hold lots of books, music, movies and other media. Then I realized that it's pretty unlikely that a deserted island would have a power outlet. Instead, I'd probably want to bring either Les Stroud's Survive!, because I appreciate his one-man show Survivorman, or Hawke's Special Forces Survival Handbook because it's more current and who would know how to survive better than soneone in Special Forces? Q: What's your favorite childhood book? A: Although I didn't read it until high school French class, The Little Prince has to be my favorite book (ostensibly) for children. I feel like I could read it every year and learn or relearn something important about how to live a happy, successful life. Not too long ago, I started collecting it in different languages as I travel to new countries. Q: What's your favorite cereal? A: I like to change things up, so I don't really have a go-to cereal (although I do eat it almost every day). Kashi Heart to Heart is probably my favorite high-fiber "healthy" cereal and Corn Pops might be the best unwholesome option. It just doesn't soggy as quickly as other tasty sugary cereals like Golden Grahams or Honey Smacks. Q: Do you have any secret talents? A: If I told you they wouldn't be secret, would they? I'm pretty good at patting my head and rubbing my belly (but the opposite is a fair bit harder). You're going to have to get to know me to find out my other secret talents :) Donate Your Car to the Friends of the Millbrae Library! -Running or not -tax deductible -free vehicle pick-up -We handle IRS & DMV paperwork Please contact our Friend of the Library, Susan Bianucci, at 650-692-4759 to get started!
