A Fond Farewell
Michelle Coberly, Executive Director
On January 31, 2015, we will be saying goodbye to Dr. Clinton Harris, who has been the Medical
Director at Porter Hills for 17 years. We are so appreciative to him for the gifts and talents he has
shared with us over this period of time. He gave his heart to his patients, spending as much time
with them and family as they needed in order to help them live their best lives. While we will miss
him, we are happy that he will be able to spend more time with family. Please join us in celebrating
Dr. Harris on Monday, January 26, 2015, from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. in the Main Dining Room. I hope to
see you there!

Platinum is the modern gift to commemorate the 20 th anniversary. The
Porter Hills Foundation is approaching this important 20 year milestone!
A Porter Hills exploratory committee was formed in 1961, which led to
incorporation in 1964, and the ground was broke for the Porter Hills
Village campus in 1970. Ultimately, the Porter Hills Foundation was
incorporated in 1995. Today, and as we look into the future, the Porter
Hills Foundation remains steadfast in our commitment to support the
development of resources to ensure the ultimate wellbeing of our senior
community.
As we turn 20, we thank you for your support of our mission and look
ahead to the next two decades!

Display Case:
We hope you enjoyed the festive December display case, featuring
items from the collections of Women’s Board members. January’s
display should be equally interesting - it’s all about boxes. Piqued your
curiosity? We hope so!

Library:
In October we asked that you put all book donations on the desk, and
we thank you for doing that. However, there are limits to what we will
accept. We do not want donations of regular print paperbacks,
dictionaries and other reference books, cookbooks, children’s books, or
how-to books. Donated books should be in good condition and of
general interest to our avid Porter Hills readers. Paperbacks can be
placed in the Card Room next to the Gallery.

Avoiding Dizziness
Jocelyn Bunce, Fitness Specialist
As we go throughout our day, our blood pressure fluctuates. These
changes ensure we receive proper blood flow to our muscles and organs
whether we are sitting, standing, or walking. As we age, our blood vessels
slightly decrease in the ability to effectively regulate our blood pressure with
position changes. Always take your time when changing positions to ensure
your health and safety - this means avoiding situations where you might
need to rush and stand quickly. For example, when you wake up in the
morning and are ready to get out of bed, be sure to rise slowly to allow time
for your blood pressure and circulation to adequately adjust. First, move
from lying to sitting, and then, breathe for a few moments before standing.
Also, know the medications you’re taking and how they may affect your
blood pressure and cause a feeling of dizziness. Taking these necessary
precautions will help decrease your chances of falling due to dizziness and
light-headedness.
Sight Seer - Channel 10
Stan Hone, GAE Resident
Like a good story? Like a good book?
Three times a day, story time is there for you on Porter Hills’ Channel 10.
Give yourself a break and let our readers whisk you to a new adventure or
delight in another time. Just sit back, close your eyes, and enjoy a good
time.
Did December’s telling of Dickens’ “Christmas Carol” kindle your memory of
Lionel Barrymore’s Ebenezer Scrooge? Did Clive Cussler’s timely
international crisis mystery, “Night Probe,” keep you on edge waiting for the
next installment? Now, join twelve-year-old Brendan as he continues his
culture altering tale of the family’s 1940’s move to a small Minnesota town
in Jon Hassler’s, “Grand Opening.” What looks like fun is “Major Pettigrew’s
Last Stand” by Helen Simonson - two quirky characters in an unlikely
romance.

January 2015 ▪ The Villager
Have you ever given much thought to what I call “the sketchiness of the
saints?” Seriously, if when you really focus on the stories behind the
people of the Bible’s pages, you have to wonder how they were ever
included in a Holy Book.
The first two people in the Bible betray God and give into temptation.
Then there’s Abraham, expelling his wife and child because an additional
wife was jealous. Noah and his chemical abuse, Joseph and his vanity,
Jacob and his lies, Moses the murderer, Jacob and his negativity, Jonah
and his management issues, David and his adultery and murder, Peter
and his denial of Jesus, Paul, the persecutor of Christians, Thomas the
doubter, and that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Seriously, by today’s
standards half of the people depicted on stained glass windows would
have wound up in jail!
So what do we make of this? Paul summed it up when he wrote, “For
we have this treasure in earthen vessels, to show that the glory belongs
to God and not us!” (II Corn. 4:7) God can use anyone he chooses. I
heard a theologian once say, “God does such great work with sinners.
Of course, that’s because sinners are all God has to work with!” Earthen
vessels.
As we begin a brand new year, we can take heart that if God could
build the Kingdom of Grace with those characters from the pages of
Scripture, God can also work miracles with contemporary characters like
you and me. Christmas has once again offered us a great treasure – the
Love of God incarnate in our world – alive in you and me. It really doesn’t
matter how flawed or imperfect we are as 2015 begins. What matters is
that God has a plan for us, a purpose for us, and God can use us in this
new year to do holy things, even if we have not always been entirely
whole. “God does such great work with sinners.” “We have this treasure
in earthen vessels…”
In this new year remember two things (1) You need to believe in
yourself, because God has a holy plan for you. Don’t focus on your
failings, focus on your potential. Don’t live in your past, live into the future
God desires for you. (2) It is actually about God, anyway. God can do
anything he wants - through you! If God wants to use you to make a dent
in the world for kindness and charity and compassion and love, then God
has that power! Just go with the flow. My prayer for you in 2015 is that
you will believe in yourself…believe in God…and wait for miracles to
happen!
A Blessed New Year!
