My name is Ashley Baldauf-Kreil and I am a student at the Pittsburgh Institute of
Mortuary Science. As I am in my final term, I am seeking a resident internship within the funeral
service field in order to gain the necessary skills under professional guidance for licensure in the
state of Pennsylvania, while enabling the mission to serve families and the community. While I
live in Pittsburgh, I am looking to any of the surrounding states for an internship position,
including Ohio, West Virginia, and Maryland. I am not opposed to serving an internship in other
states, however.
As the 2014 first place scholarship winner of the Order of the Golden Rule, I have
demonstrated that I work hard and am dedicated to this profession. Currently, I have served two
terms at PIMS, earning a 4.0 GPA each term and earning a spot on the Dean’s List twice. While
attending school, I hold a part-time job and am able to effectively juggle the struggle of
completing 21 credits per term while working. The classes I mastered at PIMS help me to
develop my technique as a potential funeral director. So far, I have surveyed anatomy in relation
to the chemistry of the embalming procedure. I also understand and can apply business law and
financial accounting to the funeral service profession. I have survey pathology to become
knowledgeable in ante and post mortem conditions of body. Funeral management and funeral
rites in day to day affairs at a funeral home were also mastered. Regulatory compliance gave me
knowledge of the occupational safety agencies and standards of such agencies in relation to
funeral service. Perhaps the most important lessons taught and mastered were of ethics and
morality, useful to uphold a reputable stance amongst peers in the funeral service industry.
Clinical embalming and restorative art were actively used in weekly labs at PIMs, honing in my
skills and techniques that will eventually be used to present a well-prepared loved one to a
family.
In addition, I hold a Bachelor’s of Science from Point Park University in Funeral Service,
of which I graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 3.98 GPA. I also hold a minor in psychology
from Point Park University. While at Point Park, I engaged in advanced courses in general
biology, chemistry and environmental sciences with appropriate laboratory experience. I also
studied human anatomy and physiology with a dissection laboratory. My final term there focused
on advanced courses in general psychology, personality types, consciousness and abnormal
psychology. While at Point Park, I also earned lifetime membership to the Alph Chi Honor’s
Society, of which the school only offers membership to the top performing students.
As professional development experience goes, I have volunteered at John F. Slater
Funeral Home, Inc., in Pittsburgh, PA, on and off for four years. The staff has let me work
visitations, act as a greeter, attend and assist in funeral services, execute car lists and observed
embalming and cosmetics procedures. They have allowed me to see a side of the industry from a
different perspective than just as a student.
