MIDDLETOWN
Dear brothers and sisters,
I hope all is going well in Middletown,
and I miss you all! Life is calm here -- no
earthquakes to report this week! Parish life
here is different. Normally in our Norwich
Diocese, each parish has its parish church,
where Mass is said each Sunday and on
many days during the week. We do have a
few parishes that have "mission churches", a
second church that the parish has at some
distance from the church. Most of these
date from the days before the automobile,
and recently a lot of them have been closed
since they are no longer necessary.
My parish here in Guatemala has about
40 churches. The parish is coextensive with
the town, and the town has about 40 rural
communities, and most of them have their
own Church. Imagine one priest trying to
take care of all this! Normally on Sundays
we only have Mass here in the main parish
Church. During the week we visit the
SAINT FRANCIS
OF ASSISI CHURCH
outlying
communities
to celebrate Mass
there, 860
because
347 4684
most people would find it
extremely
difficult to come to the main
MIDDLETOWN
Church for Mass.
Last Sunday, however, was an
exception. There is one place where they
have Sunday Mass once a month.
Sunday morning I heard confessions here in
the main Church, and said Mass at 10. After
lunch I took an hour's ride in a pickup. We
went about 5 to 10 mph over a dirt road, a
very bumpy ride! We even had to ford a
small river. I said Mass in this little village
with a full Church, and people standing
outside the door. Experiencing the faith of
the people made the journey well worth
while! I find my own faith strengthened by
the great appreciation these people have for
the Eucharist. May God strengthen the faith
of us all and lead us to a deeper appreciation
of the ease with which we can take part in
the Mass.
God bless you all!
Your brother in Christ,
--Fr. Paul

four lives. Please ask your friends and family
members to donate. All donors will receive a
coupon for a 48 oz. container of Turkey Hill All
Natural Ice Cream, and in addition, the
individual who brings in the most referrals will
receive a special prize. Please help save lives!
Thank you.
Volunteers are needed to bake, to greet and
register donors, and to serve them with a lite
refreshment. You can volunteer for any amount
of time, one hour, two hours, etc.
