BETTERS BLOG
Dear Parishioners,
Happy Second Week of Advent! I hope your Advent journey is a good one. As a society we are not really good
about waiting. Advent is all about waiting and patience. I think the challenge is to proactively work on waiting
and how we can do this better. Small acts of patience can help this. In this season of rushing let someone else go
ahead of you in a store line, let someone go ahead of you in a parking line, take some time to call a family member
or neighbor who is not always the easiest to talk to, come early to Church and take some extra prayer time. These
small acts can lead to an improvement in patience. Patience is a virtue we all desire (I think!). The cool thing is
that Jesus always has patience with us.
It is hard to believe but on January 3, 2015 we will have been together as a parish community for 5 years. Where has the time gone?
I have to say that this has been an awesome and spectacular adventure that I have loved. It has been very special and even sacred to
create a parish community together. We will open a year of celebration to acknowledge these 5 years and anticipate the years to
come on Saturday, January 10, 2015 at the 4 pm Mass. Bishop Lennon will preside and preach at the 4 pm Mass. A catered dinner
will follow in the school gym. The dinner will be $10/pp. Tickets are available at the parish office or in the Mustard Seed after
Masses. If the $10/pp is a concern for anyone do not hesitate to call me and I will be happy to get you a ticket. I do not want anyone
not to join us because of finances. We will also initiate our star project. At the opening Mass of the parish on January 3, 2010 I
invited everyone to find a home under our star here at 367 E. 260th Street. Each family in the parish, in January, will be given a
paper star to write what they like about SRW. We will display these in the Church. It will be a lot of fun to read these. Stay tuned
for more details.
We had a very nice group of people last Wednesday for the Gospel of Mark Scripture class that we are hosting. This week we will
focus on the work of Jesus in his years of public ministry. You can still join us even if you did not come last Wednesday. It is at
6:30 pm in the Upper Hall of the School (there is an elevator).
Thank you so much to everyone who has taken tags from the Giving Tree. Your generosity never ceases to amaze me! I am troubled
by the number of families requesting assistance this year. It is quite high. There are lots and lots of people struggling right now. I
am gladdened by the number of people who have stepped up to pitch in and help make Christmas special for these people who are in
need. These people are our brothers and sisters in Christ. They are our friends, neighbors, family and parishioners. Please drop off
the items you purchase for the tag to the Vestibule of the Church on the weekends and to the parish office during the week. Deadline
for return is Sunday, December 14.
Tomorrow is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, December 8. It is a Holy day of Obligation. We will have Masses at 7 am, 8
am (School Mass), Noon, and 7 pm. We are trying the 7 pm to see if this later time helps people who work and found the 6 pm time
a bit too early. We will see how it works. We will also be having a Mass at 4 pm. This Mass will be specifically for families with
very young children. Sometime parents/grandparents tell me it is hard to bring young children to Mass because sometimes they are
fussy or act up a bit. I understand this but I think it is so important to start bringing children to Church at a very young age. This
Mass will be very laid back and interactive for children. All are welcome just know it might be a bit crazy!
Christmas will be here before you know it. Please consult elsewhere in the bulletin for the Christmas Mass Schedule.
Make it a great week!
Peace,
Fr. John
Heard it in the Hallway
In preparation for Thanksgiving the Kindergarten class read “Turkey
Trouble” by Wendi Silvano. In the story the turkey tries to disguise himself
as different animals so that he will not be eaten. The Kindergarteners were
given their own turkey to disguise and keep safe after reading the book.
Worthy Warrior
The Worthy Warrior for this week is Isaac Raddell. Isaac is generous, kind and giving. He is always willing to
help a classmate, whether it is borrowing a pencil or helping zip a jacket. He truly is a Worthy Warrior!

As we prepare for the
Christmas season, I
thought I’d put out a
simple challenge to
you.
Have you made it a tradition to take
out and display your Nativity set?
We know the Nativity scene depicts the birth of Jesus Christ on
Christmas morning. Born in a manger, Jesus came to save
humankind from sin. The nativity scene reflects the true
meaning of Christmas and why we celebrate this day.
We can recreate the Nativity scene in our homes or front lawns
during the season which can serve as a reminder to those who
visit or pass by that we believe in Jesus Christ and the miracle of
Christmas.
Remember, too, to keep it up until January 6th, the Feast of the
Epiphany. You will be able to sit in solitude, long after the
bustle of the holiday, and truly reflect on the joyful message of
the birth of Jesus.

Our deepest sympathy to the families of Robert
Zivko and Matthew Moore. May they know the
peace and comfort of God’s love and find strength
in the support of family and our parish community.
Sarah Cox’s investigation of Christianity
led her to baptism in a nondenominational
church in 2009., but she still felt that
something was missing. Her friend
Christie became Catholic through the
RCIA so Sarah began asking her
questions. She is now seeking full
communion in the Catholic faith. Sarah
married Michael Cox on March 30, 2012. Many of you know
Michael as the former leader of the music ministry for our
Sunday 6:00 pm Life Teen Mass, so Sarah is already at home at

Silence
The words of the Mass are very important. They tell us about what we are celebrating in the prayers,
readings, intercessions, and blessings. But these words are not magic. It’s possible to say all the right
words about God and even to God without actually knowing God and without allowing God to speak
to us. Silence is the gift that allows these words and actions of the Mass to sink in and allow God to
speak to us.
God speaks to us in the silence. We need silence as part of our day just as much as we need food and rest. Many of us ask why
God is so silent when we wish to pray. Think about a couple that is just getting to know each other, and one that has been together
for 50 years. The new couple will have a lot to say because they want to know more about the other. The elderly couple will spend
more time in silence because just being in the presence of the beloved is enough. God knows us better than we know ourselves. He
doesn’t need to babble on and on – God just wants to be present to you, in silence. We are able to respond to him when we finally
stop talking and start listening, not to words, but to the Presence of God.
At Mass, there are plenty of times to listen and speak, as well as times to be silent. Before Mass even begins, spend a few minutes
in silence. Before the opening and closing prayers, those moments are for you to pray in silence. Between the readings, those silent
moments are to let God’s Word seep into your soul. During the offertory, even as we sing, we make an offering of our own in
silence. After we receive the Eucharist, there is silence to reflect on the gift we have received.
Advent is all about God being present to us, so remember to use times of silence both in the Mass and in your daily routine to
consider how God is with you always, and how you can be more present to him.

FROM THE EVANGELIZATION MINISTRY….
Evangelization: If the word still scares you, keep reading!
Before I ever knew what the word “evangelize” meant, I had the privilege of seeing the best example of it one Christmas Eve many,
many years ago. I really can’t remember how old I was – probably early teens. The Slovenian side of my family (Mom’s) was
gathered at Grandma and Grandpa Zupancic’s house. We had finished eating and the gift-opening frenzy was over. We were all just
sitting around enjoying the time together when a few of my cousins and I decided to attend the early evening Mass down the street
at our parish church. It was only about seven houses away…an easy walk on a perfect winter night. We were getting our coats when
my mom noticed one of my cousins still sitting in the living room. Jan had made up her mind some time ago that attending Mass
wasn’t something she wanted to spend time on so she was going to hang back and wait for us to return. Without making a scene, my
mom asked Jan if she was going with us. When Jan declined, my mom calmly and kindly said, “Everyone is going. What will you
do while they’re gone? Why don’t you just go?” So she did. And in accepting my mom’s invitations, something incredible
happened to cousin Jan during the liturgy.. I’m not really sure about the specifics. But she had such a beautiful experience that she
continued to attend Mass on a regular basis. And that led her to a deepening relationship with Jesus that continued to grow as time
went on. My mom’s simple invitation, a simple act of evangelization, changed her life.
Is there someone you know who has been away from the Church? Maybe they are just waiting to be asked. Take my mom’s lead.
Offer a calm and kind invitation to join you for Christmas Mass. You never know where it might lead! Evangelization can be just
that simple!
Agnus Dei Repeats
I’d like to offer an explanation for many of you who have asked
about why we are repeating the Agnus Dei more than three times at
Sunday Masses. The General Instructions to the Roman Missal (#83)
reads, “The supplication Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) is usually sung
by the choir or cantor with the congregation replying; or at least
recited aloud. This invocation accompanies the fraction of the bread,
and for this reason, may be repeated as many times as necessary until
the rite has been completed. The final time it concludes with the
words grant us peace.” The fraction rite includes the breaking of the
bread, the distribution of the hosts into the various patens,
distribution of communion to any concelebrating priests, and the
silent prayer and genuflection of the presider. Because we have many
patens to fill with hosts, the fraction rite sometimes takes a bit longer
than three verses of the Agnus Dei, so it is actually appropriate and in
keeping with liturgical guidelines to expand the verses of the Agnus
Dei until the fraction rite is complete. I hope this helps to answer
some of your questions!
