Ron Weissbeck Fourth Sunday of Easter For the last three Sundays, we have been hearing Jesus’ farewell discourse before He ascends into heaven. This Sunday, Jesus concludes with a conversation with the Father where He petitions on behalf of His followers. In His words, Jesus’ love for His disciples, then as well as now, shines forth. There is a sense that now we are all truly one with Him. We are consecrated in truth, as He is consecrated as the truth. Jesus commands us to love. We are to love God and each other. These are simple commands, but they are so hard to follow. Do we not attest to the fact that God is love? How can we truly explain or understand the depths of love without knowledge of God? So, when we give love to someone, we are giving a glimpse of God to that person. When we love God, we are giving back to Him a glimpse of Himself since we are created in His image. A world without love is a world without God! Before this Easter season ends, resolve to love more. The world needs more love. Through the act of loving, may it come to know God in a more profound way. My dear family in Christ, One of the most satisfying aspects of ministry has always involved pastoral care. This was an essential part of my training after the Second Vatican Council. The way that this impacted me personally was that I was asked to be chaplain at University Hospital which was in the parish of Christ the King in Denver. In the early 70s, the hospital was in the forefront of transplants, and tending to the indigents outside of the Denver area. In this ministry I was challenged to listen to the patients concerns, worries, and questions about the interplay of healing that was medical and spiritual. It’s one thing to have had preparation in the seminary, but quite a different experience altogether to encounter a person in the “here and now” who is sick and being challenged by a difficulty of that magnitude. I learned pastoral care in the “field.” I will never forget meeting a person named John, only two months older than me, who was dealing with a brain tumor. This is not, I discovered, a “case study” but a person who was facing the reality of impending death and trying to make sense of his experience by means of faith. It was not so much what I said, but just being present to him during my regular visits. One of the clear expressions of being Catholic is an awareness of sacramentality, that is, to be aware through the ordinary of the graced moments in life. All of us have been called through our baptism to be ministers. This is not carried out so much in the act of doing as it is being a conscious channel of the divine presence. Jesus is our model for the good shepherd because He not only talked about what needed to be done but put His life on the line. He has demonstrated through the resurrection that the power of the Holy Spirit has been released and is available to all of us. The theme for this the fourth Sunday of Easter is one that calls all of us to be ministers. As we move beyond our comfort zone and share the Good News of the LORD, more people will come to realize that this is not limited to an hour at church, but an extension of our convictions that are grounded in responding to the call of the Good Shepherd who calls each of us by name. Online Signups for Photos St. John’s will be scheduling appointments for a new 2015 Parish Directory. Photographers will be here the weeks of May 12-16 and May 19-23. Take advantage of this opportunity to get the family together and SMILE for the camera! Online signup information will be in next week’s bulletin. Volunteers We are looking for volunteers to assist in hospitality for the photo shoots, scheduling appointments, and updating our parishioner records. Please contact Theresa Valencia at 303-776-0737, ext. 111 or e-mail [email protected]. Fr. Ron “I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep.” John 10:14-15 www.johnthebaptist.org 3 CHURCH OF SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST LONGMONT, COLORADO St. John’s Food Bank and Outreach Reflection By Seth Willden In a recent homily, I was reminded of how good Catholics are at practicing Lent. Indeed, we have many rituals to help us prepare for the joy of Easter, but what do we do with this joy? How do we proclaim the goodness of the Lord? Lent is forty days, but we seem to forget that Easter spans fifty days, and we often don’t step further into that relationship. Our faith is built on intentionality. We don’t reap the fruits of our faith if we don’t have the desire to enter into a deeper understanding. By John Williams Our food bank sometimes receives letters from a family expressing their gratitude that we have supported them with weekly food boxes delivered to their door. Although we don’t expect a thank you, letters of gratitude are always welcomed when someone takes the time to send a card or letter thanking us for our service. We serve 4-5 tons a week to around 200 families per week. It takes an organized weekly volunteer effort to receive the food that we deliver, and to fill the boxes that we take to these families’ homes. Thank you to the parishioners of St. John’s who provide the financial donations which help enable our buying team to purchase the items needed to make our food boxes truly nutritional. For the last thirteen years, St. John’s has supported our efforts, even making possible the purchase of our food bank building. I never cease to be amazed at the commitment of our Church in regards to feeding the hungry. I am quite certain that Jesus is so very proud of each and every one of you. What is the Archbishop’s Catholic Appeal? The Appeal is the motivation from our shepherd to ensure that we nurture our Catholic faith, grow in our spiritual journeys, and thrive as one community of faith. Here is a recent letter we received: March 31 Thank you so much for the box of food that you bring us every week. It helps us out so much! We are kind of down on our luck right now so the extra food you provide is truly a blessing. When we receive personal hygiene items such as shampoo and dish and laundry soap, and yes even toilet paper, we are very thankful. We know the money for what we receive must come from the people that attend your church, so please, thank them for helping us. Why should you give to the Appeal? Because we are called by God to be disciples who take risks for his kingdom. That risk involves different types of sacrifices, one of them being our generous gift to the greatest cause – the mission that Jesus Christ entrusted to his Church. We are called to return to God a portion of what he has allowed us to receive. Who benefits from the Appeal? The tangible fruits of the Appeal are many. Your gift will be distributed to nearly forty ministries that were created to bring the light and hope of Christ to many. For more information, please visit www.archden.org/donate. A Food Bank Family The Good Shepherd This Fourth Sunday of Easter is traditionally referred to as “Good Shepherd Sunday.” Today we listen to the words of the Lord as He refers to Himself as the “good shepherd who lays down His life for the sheep.” It is sometimes so difficult for us to grasp the reality that anyone would lay down his or her own life for the sake of someone else. This is especially true in a society that places high value on power and personal advancement, often at the cost of “trampling” on other people in order to climb the ladder. Today’s scriptures point to the one we are called to emulate—the one who lays down His life for His sheep. Today’s scriptures challenge us to discover ways to bring life to those around us—to build up rather than to tear down. I was asked by RCIA Coordinator, Anna Campbell, to be a sponsor. I had never been one and didn’t know what to expect. In accepting the invitation, I know that I was enriched by the experience. The classes I’ve attended have helped me to understand even more about our Catholic faith and why I practice it. It’s not easy for me, but the grace of God has helped me. I see the rich history of our faith; a beautiful gift from God. The Paschal meal that we shared together brought back memories of my family’s exodus from Vietnam in 1975. We were a family of twelve with the oldest being 12 years old and the youngest in the womb. I was the second child. There are similarities between my family’s journey and that of the Israelites out of Egypt—the hastiness of it, the danger, the sickness, and the fear. Because of the bombing, we rushed out to the sea in a fishing boat for safety. There wasn’t time to pack all the necessities for life. My parents had paid for a spot for each one of us on that boat with the little gold that they had. Paper money was worthless. When we got hungry, my mom gave each of us tablespoons of rice grain to chew on and a swallow of water to quiet our hunger pangs. One night a group of soldiers in a smaller boat than ours threatened to blow us up with grenades. We got very seasick as the boat moved further out to sea looking for rescue ships. We were afraid of drowning since none of us knew how to swim. Through it all, God was with us, guiding, and protecting us as He did the Israelites. We arrived at “the land of milk and honey,” the United States. It is God’s miracle for us, and I thank Him for all the freedom that we have. The Easter Vigil was a beautiful experience. It’s even more meaningful for me after all the explanations from classes. I was baptized at a few weeks old, received First Communion, and Confirmation at a young age. I was not mature enough to understand and experience all the fullness of the sacraments. Now I do! I would like to thank Fr. Ron and Anna for being there, teaching, and guiding us in our journey of faith. May God bless you both. I encourage anyone interested to prayerfully consider becoming a sponsor. You will be blessed! Peace of the Risen Christ be with you all. Family Faith Formation 2015 Walking with the Risen Lord! When our children were fearful my husband used to repeat these words of Jesus to them, “I know mine and mine know me, I will never leave you or forsake you” John10:14-15. They took great comfort in hearing these words. We ALL need reassurance at times, even those who may not recognize the “leader,” Jesus. To that end, Faith Formation supports His promise, the Church. Our community of faith will also “be with us” to support and instruct us through our lifelong Journey of Faith to the Lord. Last classes for all grades: April 28th and April 30th.
