Fruit & Veggie Program
Thank you to the Somonauk Junior Women's Club and
the Somonauk Lion's Club and an anonymous donor
for donating $1,250 to J.R.W. The money is for the
school to offer fresh fruits & veggies to all the students
several days during lunch. Research shows that most
children do not eat the recommended 5 daily servings
of fruits & veggies. The goal of this program is to increase students' exposure to less commonly eaten
fruits & veggies, help them try some new foods, & ultimately increase their "daily 5" intake. A special thank
you also to Lynda Root and Julie Wilson for their hard
work.

Recently FFA members competed with their individual SAE (recordbook)
projects against others who have similar projects. Somonauk Leland Sandwich had nine students advance out of section level to district level. There
are just over 50 areas, so we had about 18% of the total section winners.
On Wednesday these nine members competed at our district event, where we had two students advance to state level
competition. Competing were
Cordell Wiesbrook, Turf grass management
Sara Glab, Specialty crop production
Joe Warhurst, Vegetable production
Cody Wrobel, Ag Communications
Josh Toft.Diversified Livestock Production
Jenna Baker, Swine Production placement
Melanie Bennett, Ag Sales Entrepreneurship
Stephen Riskedal, Goat Production
Anna Grommes. Specialty Animal Production
Melanie Bennett and Sara Glab will move on in their projects of Agribusiness and Specialty crop production, respectively. They are now of 5 finalists across the state. They will compete at the University of Illinois on Saturday April 5
On Monday, Melanie Bennett competed in our district competition for District Star in Agribusiness. This competition
for state FFA degree applications, and they compete in 4 areas based on their type of project. Melanie has been selected as the District II Star -and will compete at state. She is one of 5 finalists in the state!! This is a tremendous
honor and she will be recognized on stage at the state FFA convention in June.
We are very proud of our FFA members who competed. It takes many hours of work and training to get to this level
of competition.
