This year has definitely not been any different. The following are some highlights that have taken place this year: 1. The Spell Bowl team placed second at NLC. 2. We had ninety-four students earn a 4.0 GPA the first trimester and ninety-nine students the second trimester. 3. There were three students receiving multiple awards at the Scholastic Art Competition. 4. Eighty-four freshmen were honored at the Tri Kappa Academic Honors banquet. 5. Forty-nine math students participated in the annual American Mathematics Contest. Three of Six Academic Teams Qualify for State Competition! On April 22, 21 competitions were held across the State of Indiana for the 287 schools who chose to field teams in the following areas: English, Fine Arts, Science, Math, Social Studies, and Interdisciplinary. The top five to seven teams from each class qualified for the State finals. NorthWood Academic Teams competed at the Area Meet at Northridge High School. After computing scores for the other fifty-two schools who competed in Class 2, three NWHS teams--Fine Arts, Science, and Math--qualified for the State Finals on May 10, at Purdue University. The Math team, placed 2nd in Class 2 and is coached by Doug Gerber. The following students competed for the Math team: Captain – Adam Darr, Joshua Balasa, Logan Berger, Michael Gongwer, Connor Yoder, and Dominic Yoder. The Fine Arts team tied for 3rd overall in Class 2 and is coached by Melinda Sharp. The following students competed for the Fine Arts team: Captain – Katlyn Miller, Mikayla Bedward, Veronica Hochstetler, Nolan McBride, Amy Schrock, and Emily Stichter. The Science team placed 4th in Class 2 and is coached by Stephani Neff. Competing for the team were: Captain — Adam Darr, Logan Berger, Michael Gongwer, Sarah McNeill, Connor Yoder, and Dominic Yoder. The English team, coached by Kelly Vorhis, placed 6 th and missed qualifying for State by one question. Competing for the English team were: Captain — Sarah McNeill, Haley Foster, Dylan Fuller, Devyn Maugel, Nolan McBride, and Hailee Neverman. 6th The Interdisciplinary team, which placed in Class 2, missing state qualification by the 3rd tiebreaker, is coached by Melinda Sharp. The following students competed for this team: Captain – Adam Darr, Dylan Fuller, Nolan McBride, Abbey McNeill, Sarah McNeill, Katlyn Miller, Hailee Neverman, and Dominic Yoder. The Social Studies team placed 9th out of fifty-two teams in Class 2 and is coached by Trevor Shields. The following students competed for the Social Studies team: Captain – April 28, 2014 Abbey McNeill, Haley Foster, Hailee Neverman, Derek Parker, Dylan Simon, and Shelby Thomaston. All State Competitions will take place at the Loeb Playhouse on the Purdue University West Lafayette campus. This facility seats over 1,000 people, so the community is invited to drive down to Purdue to cheer on the students to three State titles. 2014 State Finals Schedule: 10:15 a.m. Opening ceremonies 10:30 a.m. Social Studies round 11:30 a.m. Math round 12:30 p.m. English round 1:30 p.m. Science round 2:30 p.m. Fine Arts round 3:30 p.m. Interdisciplinary round (awards will be presented at the end of each round) Congratulations to all of the teams for a great season! FFA UPDATE The NorthWood FFA is finishing this school year strong by taking part in many year-end activities. The annual banquet was held on April 24th where members were recognized for this year’s achievements. Students have competed in the Small Engines competition and worked with Fairfield for Livestock judging. The Small Engines team of Emily Sheets and Travis Brovont competed at State, finishing in 4th and the team of Dylan Harmon and Dalton Tener placed 10th. The Livestock judging members that are continuing on to State Livestock are Mark Jarvis, Natalie Hostetler, and Brandi Henderson. Several students competed in the FFA Leadership competition and were very successful. The two girls that won their proficiencies were Emily Sheets and Betsy Mikel. Emily received a gold ranking on her Ag Communication proficiency then later resubmitted to compete to win State and Betsy received a silver ranking for her dairy production proficiency. Rebecca Homan and Kate Minder placed second in their Food Science Demonstration. Shelby McFerren placed third on her Agriculture & Farm Business Management Demonstration while Alyssa Chupp and Betsy Mikel placed third on their Multimedia Scrapbook. This year’s tractor restoration team members are currently working on a Farmall F-20 which belongs to Drew Chapman’s great great grandfather and Emily Sheets is working on her Alice Chalmers C with her dad. We plan to show the tractors at the Elkhart County Fair this summer. Thanks to Butch Hamman, Howard Yoder and Drew’s great great grandfather, Lowell Chapman, for making this project possible. As school is coming to a close, many kids are gearing up for the fairs. We hope you will visit local fairs and support our FFA members. THEATRE-IN-THE-ROUND For its final production of the school year NorthWood Drama has chosen a wonderful comedy by Neil Simon entitled The Good Doctor. Based on characters created by Anton Checkov, the play portrays various scenes from Mr. Checkov’s most memorable plays in a new and very entertaining way. Produced in the round these stories take on even more intimate and endearing qualities. Admission for the show is $4.00 per person and tickets are available at the door. Production dates are Friday and Saturday, May 30 and 31 at 7:00 and Sunday, June 1 at 3:30. You won’t want to miss this very successful comedy so make plans now to attend. CHOIR NEWS On Thursday, April 24, members of NorthWood’s Freshman Choir, Chorale and Concert Choir participated in the ISSMA Organizational Contest held at Concord High School. News just in from Ball State: Congratulations to the 2013 yearbook staff for winning the Ball State J-Day Superior Overall Yearbook Award. In addition, Monica Jones won the Superior Sports Photo and Natalie Beaumont-Christy won the Excellent Sports Photo. The NorthWood Bands are staying busy this spring. The NorthWood Wind Ensemble performed at the ISSMA Concert Band Festival at Northridge High School on Friday, April 25. The band played extremely well earning Gold ratings from all four judges. The band also received ISSMA's "With Distinction" recognition based on the scores they received. For the second year in a row, the band has earned the ISSMA Band Department Award. The Red Regiment marched in the first parade this spring. The Wakarusa Maple Syrup Parade on Saturday, April 25 was a fun day. Mark your calendar for the Wa-Nee Festival of Bands on May 16 in the NWHS auditorium at 7:00 p.m. The Festival will feature selections from the ISSMA Festival program as well as more light-hearted tunes including selections from Walt Disney’s Frozen. Red Regiment is again running a recycling fundraiser. Collection times are Friday, May 2 from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, May 3 from 8:00 a.m. - noon at NWHS. AT NORTHWOOD HIGH SCHOOL Once again this year, NorthWood High School will be offering the mandatory IHSAA Participation Physical to NWHS student/athletes that will participate on extra-curricular teams for the 2014-15 school year. We will have the statemandated Concussion Awareness Form that all athletes and parents are now required to sign before participating on any team at NWHS. The cost of the physical is $25. Checks can be made out to NWHS. This will be the only day this will be provided. It is a great opportunity for all NW athletes to get this completed before the fall season arrives. A variety of doctors and nurses from our local offices have generously donated their time for this to be done. Memorial High School will be offering a variety of classes during two sessions this summer. The first session will begin on June 10 and end on June 27, and the second session will begin on July 9 and end on July 31. Students would be eligible to earn two credits over the two sessions. Courses in the following subject areas will be available: Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Business, Health and Physical Education. The registration fee is $75.00 per semester class. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch pay a fee of $15.00. END-OF-COURSE EXAMS (eca) Students who are finishing English 10 or Algebra I during the third trimester will be taking the End-of-Course Assessments (ECA). These tests are also considered the Indiana Graduation Qualifying Exams (GQE). The tests will be taken during English or Algebra 1 classes the week of May 19-23. Students finishing Biology 1 will also take an ECA; however, this test does not count as part of the graduation requirement. IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR JUNIORS!! Any junior who is planning to apply to college should take an SAT and/or ACT with Writing this spring. There is only one test date remaining for each of these tests.
