The visit provided students with a tour of ISU
where students saw the quad, fitness center, a
dorm room, and got a brief introduction to
some of the academic buildings. Students also
learned about majors, minors, sports teams,
and other on-campus activities.
At the beginning of the tour students met with
an admissions advisor to get a brief introduction
to the admissions process and learn a
bit about the campus. Students
watched an introduction video and
then began a tour around the campus
with ISU students.
Sophomore Leon Ramos explained, “It was
an eye opening experience, to see so many
opportunities so close to home.”
Throughout the tour, students from each
grade level had an eye opening experience.
“Applying to colleges in 6 months?! That’s
really scary,” exclaimed junior Candelaria
Barrientos.
Sterling High School Students learned about
the opportunities that Illinois State University offers as well as a look ahead at what
their future holds.
An introduction to college life proved
useful for many of the AVID students,
including sophomore Darshon Keefer.
“This trip was beneficial to me because
it showed me a great college with my
offered major and it awesome to see
that the college is known for it,” said
Keefer.

Scholarship Information
Is your student planning on going to a four-year university or a community college? Is he/she
planning to pursue a career in the fields of education, medicine, business, agriculture, accounting, engineering, or music? Is your student involved in cross country or track? Or does he/she
participate in high school or club sports? Does he/she have a GPA of 2.5 or higher? Is he/she a
good role model and friend? Is your student a child or grandchild of a veteran? Did he/she
attend a SPS grade school? Is there a financial need in your family?
If you could answer yes to any of the above questions, your child should apply for
some of the local scholarships available on our website! Even if your student does
not meet every qualification listed, encourage him/her to apply, as some scholarships each year are not awarded due to a lack of applications and candidates.
Please visit our website at www.sterlingpublicschools.org/shs/counseling/scholarship to find the
most up to date information regarding local scholarships. It is important to look for the red
“NEW” next to each scholarship listing in order to ensure that it is available. Most applications
are available on-line. Please be aware of all scholarship requirements and due dates.
Illinois Youth Survey
During the month of April, all sophomores and seniors will be taking part in the Illinois Youth
Survey. The Illinois Youth Survey is designed by the University of Illinois to better understand
Illinois youth risk and protective behaviors as they relate to problems and academic success.
Please click on the following link to learn about the survey, and if you would not like your child
to participate in the survey, please fill out the parent permission denial form and return it to the
guidance office.
