MGH CENTER FOR COMMUNITY HEALTH IMPROVEMENT YOUTH PROGRAMS
AMERICORPS MASSACHUSETTS PROMISE FELLOW/ YOUTH SCHOLARS FELLOW
AmeriCorps Massachusetts Promise Fellows deliver the resources young people need to be successful in life by
creating, managing, and leading meaningful out-of-school time programs for youth in grades 4-12. Fellow projects
focus on mentoring, social and emotional learning, college and career readiness, academic enrichment, and
community service-learning.
The Massachusetts Promise Fellowship achieves this by placing AmeriCorps Fellows with non-profit
organizations and state/local government agencies that focus on fulfilling the needs of our youth by providing: a
caring adult, a safe place, a healthy start, a marketable skill, and an opportunity to give back.
SERVICE DESCRIPTION
The mission of the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Center for Community Health Improvement
(CCHI) is to collaborate with community and hospital partners to build and sustain healthier communities and to
enhance the hospital’s responsiveness to patients and community members from diverse backgrounds. Over the
past 19 years, the CCHI has worked with community partners in Chelsea, Revere, Charlestown, and Boston to
assess needs and create more than 35 programs that prevent and reduce substance abuse and violence, increase
access to care for vulnerable populations, eliminate racial and ethnic disparities in health care and provide
opportunities for Boston youth. Building upon MGH Youth Scholar College Prep Initiative, the Fellow will expand
program offerings and continue to facilitate the college readiness program for 9th and 10th grade scholars. The
initiative’s goal is to ensure that MGH Youth Scholars are motivated and compelled to complete high school and
matriculate and graduate from institutions of higher education.
