were members of the militia.

Revolutionary War: Virtually all military age males served on active duty either in the
Massachusetts Militia or the Continental Army. See MASSACHUSETTS SOLDIERS AND
SAILORS OF THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR (Boston, 1900)
From 1793-1840 all males, with some exceptions, 18-45 served in the Massachusetts Militia.
State records do not list enlisted men. All officers are listed in our archives.
War of 1812: Massachusetts men had very limited service in this war. See RECORDS OF THE

Mexican War: Very limited service. State provided the 1st Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry;
roster in archives.
Civil War: Published record in MASSACHUSETTS SOLDIERS, SAILORS AND MARINES
IN THE CIVIL WAR (Norwood, 1931) published by this office. Individual soldier records for
this volume on file in the archives. National Archives, Washington, DC maintains the pension
records.
Spanish American War Era 1898-1902: individual service cards on file, rosters by town.
Mexican Border Campaign 1916: individual service cards on file.
World War I (1917-1919): military service cards, testimonial card indicates post-war address.
Town rosters listing servicemen and women with military records.
Massachusetts Volunteer Militia/National Guard: 1840-1992. Muster rolls, enlistment records,
officer service cards, service records (after 1945) on file.
World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War, peacetime after 1980, Gulf War, Iraq War,
Afghanistan War: Massachusetts paid a state bonus and veterans were required to furnish a copy
of their DD Form 214 Record of Separation. These records are maintained by the Military

For veterans from outside of Massachusetts from 1912-present, send Standard Form 180 Request
Pertaining to Military Records to National Personnel Records Center, 1 Archives Dr, St Louis,
MO 63138. Virtually all US Army personnel records from 1912-1958 were destroyed in a fire in
1973 at this center.
