This session is my first exposure I’ve looked at the units on the ESE website We’re planning to teach a MCU from ESE We’re teaching a MCU from ESE We’re designing our own MCUs Instructional Shifts in ELA/Literacy Building knowledge through content-rich nonfiction Reading, writing, and speaking grounded in evidence from text, both literary and informational Regular practice with complex text and academic language Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education The NEED: Improving Reading in the Primary Grades “Almost fifteen years have passed since the publication of the National Research Council’s seminal report Preventing Reading Difficulties in Young Children. …Vocabulary and comprehension, long neglected in the primary grades, still appear to be neglected. Contrary to the report’s recommendations, attention to building conceptual knowledge in science and social studies has actually decreased in the last fifteen years. …Near stagnation in fourth-grade students’ comprehension achievement is thus unsurprising.” Nell Duke and Meghan Block, in Literacy Challenges for the Twenty-First Century Princeton University and the Brookings Institution, October 2012 7 What is a Model Curriculum Unit?
