New Friends!
Upcoming Events
This week we are thinking about new friends
and how we can welcome people in different
ways. It is always a pleasure to see how kind
and thoughtful our older children are towards
the very youngest children, and how all our
pupils welcome new friends with ease and
confidence.

Chew Valley Beer Festival
It is the annual Ubley Beer Festival this
th
th
Friday and Saturday night (12 /13 ) and
our PTA are fortunate to be invited for
the second time to provide the food. We
serve burgers and bacon butties for
people to enjoy with their beer and it is a
fantastic fundraising opportunity for us
as a school.
The PTA would be very grateful for some
extra help in the kitchen on Friday night
from 7.30pm, either cooking or serving
the food.
Here are the new Reception children who have
already settled extremely well and have this
week begun enjoying school dinners for the
first time! Well done everyone!
Many thanks.

If you are able to spare some time on
Friday evening, then please contact the
Chair of the PTA Gen Moat, on 07521

From 19 – 24 September the travelling book
fair will be open after school in the playground
(weather permitting). There is a leaflet in your
child’s bookbag tonight giving you an idea of
the sort of books on sale and how the scheme
benefits the school.
Local Chess Champion
Clarinet Lessons for KS2!
As some of you may have seen in this month’s
Chew Valley Gazette, we have the new British
Under-16 Chess Champion living just down the
road in Blagdon! Zoe Strong, aged 15, worked
extremely hard for her title and has been playing
chess since the age of 3.
As many of you know we were able to provide
violin lessons for every child in KS2 all year last
year. I am delighted to say that thanks to the
PTA we are able to continue with this BANES
supported music scheme and are this year
providing clarinet lessons to every child from
Year 3 to Year 6!
I am sharing this with you because her father is
Chris Strong who has been running our afterschool chess club for a couple of years now! He
is clearly a talented coach and I know that the
children who have taken part in chess club in
previous years have really benefited from his
teaching. Congratulations to Zoe and to Chris!
th
These lessons will start on Monday 15
September and will work in the same way as
last year. I’m already looking forward to the
first performance!
Thank you Mr Wilkinson!
After nearly 26 years with us Steve Wilkinson,
who has provided general maintenance
services across the whole school (as well as
unending patience and humour!) has taken the
decision to retire. We will miss him
enormously and I wish to thank him for
everything he has done for the school in that
time. Enjoy your retirement Steve!
Ubley Church News
On Sunday some of our pupils helped at Ubley
Church Café. Mrs Simnett had written a drama
about the history of St Bartholomew’s Church
and the children dressed up in Victorian
clothes to become the school’s first pupils,
under the guidance of certificated teacher
Miss Dadsurell (Mrs Luckett). Thank you to
Evie, Annabel, Jodie, Katie Charter and Cerys
for their contribution to the service.
First PTA Meeting of the year!
All parents very welcome!
This will be the first kick-off meeting of the new
school year. We like to keep them fun and
informal and would really like to welcome new
members on to our very active PTA.
We will be catching up, discussing fundraising
events planned and any new ideas as well as
setting a date for our AGM.
Hope you can join us at the Ring O’ Bells in
rd
Compton Martin, Tuesday 23 September at
7.45pm.
Regards, Gen (PTA Chair)
