Haere mai haere mai haere mai !
Welcome everyone to what is going to be another great year at OTP. It has started
well with children really happy to be back and new children settling in well. We will
endeavour to work with you, to the best of our ability, to provide a happy, safe and
successful year for all our students to fulfil our mission which is to provide an
environment that will equip our children to be the best they can be. To all of you who
are joining us for the first time, this is the first of our newsletters that will come home
every Thursday, unless there are major problems stopping its publication.
We are all looking forward to officially welcoming all new families and students at our
powhiri (Maori welcome) on Friday 13 February at 1:15am. If you have joined our
school since our last powhiri on 8 August last year, your family and child are invited to
attend this event which recognises our responsibility as tangatawhenua (hosts) to
greet you and make you part of our school family. This is a low pressure event and we
invite any males who would like the opportunity to speak to let me know before the
powhiri so we can organise a waiata to support the mihi.
As a way of providing opportunities for our school community to mix and mingle while
having a great time in this beautiful environment, we have a school picnic lunch and
swim. The PTA organise a BBQ for this event - see back page for menu and prices.
This is scheduled for Thursday 12 February. We plan to leave school at 11:00am,
walking to the beach on the playground on the eastern side of the marina entrance,
arriving there around 11:30 It would be appreciated if some of you could bring
wetsuits to do a stint of supervision in the water.
With a new year comes new teachers and class processes. It is important that
parents and caregivers know how school life looks like on a daily basis for their
children. Developing a positive relationship with the teacher also opens those
communication doors which makes the shared responsibility of education so much
easier. To kick start these processes we run a meet the teacher evening for all
classrooms where explanations on how things will operate are provided, an
opportunity to ask questions. After the meeting you will have the opportunity to share
any information the teacher/s need to be aware of about your children. These
meetings will take place next Thursday 17th February. Please note times for these
meetings later in the newsletter.
For one of our families at the school, 2015 will be a challenging year ahead. Barclay
Morunga, one of our 5 year old students and younger brother of Brooke Pinny, has
been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia and is currently undergoing treatment at Starship Hospital in Auckland. Barclay's family are staying at the
Ronald McDonald house for the next few weeks and going forward, he will have

weekly trips to Auckland for ongoing treatment. Barclay will be unable to attend
school in 2015 due to his low immunity. Emotionally and financially this will be a
huge strain on the family. As a small and close community WE WANT TO HELP. On
18 February we will be holding an 'orange day' (colour for Leukemia) where students
can come with a splash of, or fully dressed in, orange. A gold coin donation to show
your support to Barclay and his family would be greatly appreciated. Donations will
go towards Petrol and Food vouchers.
If you would like further information or would like to provide any assistance please
contact Christine Moodie on 0275384440 or Val at the school.
Regards,
Adrian Smith
Your eldest child will come home with a school magnet for your fridge today to keep
you up to date the term dates and school contact numbers.
