LA VOCE DI VICO PANCELLORUM anno IX ° - Numero 19 - NATALE 2013 It is a shame that we only remembered about this anniversary when it was too late, and apart from the restoration of one of the public fountains (in the Piazza of the Chiesina) we could perhaps have organised a public event, a celebration or an exhibition. To compensate for this we are publishing a selection of historic photographs pertaining to the construction of the aqueduct by kind permission of Carlo Barsanti, who has the affairs of our village very close to his heart. As it was such an important and innovative event with such long lasting benefits for Vico, there must exist many other undiscovered photographs that record the construction of this aqueduct, if not here in the village then perhaps with our fellow villagers who are now living abroad. So please let us have copies for the next issue of our naïve magazine. Do you see in the pictures cranes, diggers or explosives? No, only some very rudimentary manual tools ( the wine flask or 'lanterna' as it is called in Arivaresco is clearly in view) . However these men, working without pay, managed to complete this highly important work for the village, a construction which is still valid today. Perhaps with more sophisticated tools they could have obtained the water from a deeper source, with the result that the water company today would have to add less chlorine today. Also, having instruments and money surely they would be treated better our aqueduc t, not as you can see in the actual pictures . Here are some examples of how the aqueduct pag. 3 Our water is under private management and we pay bills to them , but water is public because it comes from Nature the company does not have to buy it, the upkeep is non existent as is the construction of new pipelines, the drains do not reach all parts of the village , the purifying system, does not exist , so if they do not invest this money then why should we pay for a service that is so poorly supplied?
