Parents and the faculty of the Department of Modern Languages applauded our French Young Authors (who had submitted entries for the 2014 OECTA Prix jeunes écrivains) and members of Team TLC (The Language Clinic) at Viva XII. New this year at the celebration was the formal presentation of the graduate award, Meritas La petite fleur. ►Our twenty-one French authors received Certificats and a copy of our comprehensive anthology, Viva XII; our eight genre winners (School Level) also received Pje T-shirts. Congratulations to Dora Szarics (Senior Nonfiction), and Ye Na Lee and Sharon Tan (Senior Play), whose entries each captured second place at the Board Level; and to the team of Margherita Giambattista, Sofia Ilina, Maya Pavlova and Vivian Zhang, whose junior play was selected third. Thank you to mentors Amelia, Daria, Haley, Ioulia, Ive, Katrina, Mahdieh, Margherita, Seongwoo, Sharon, Victor and William, and to presiders M. Puopolo and M. Marcuzzi. ►The Meritas award went to Sharon Tan for her generosity on many fronts, over the past four years, to the initiatives of the Department. A final thank you to M. Marcuzzi, who prepared the Certificats, designed the Pje T-shirt, published the 48-page Anthologie, and coordinated the twelfth edition of Viva. « CELUI QUI MANGE CE PAIN event VIVRA ÉTERNELLEMENT. », RECAP from the Gospel of John, was the theme of the Mass celebrated on May 9, in the St. Theresa Chapel, with Father Ernie DeCiccio as celebrant. A fitting close to Catholic Education Week, the service brought together Period 2 French classes for our annual Marian liturgy. Thanks to the following students for their contribution to the beautiful service: lectors Nima Razazian, Monica Fanous, Riley Ferrazzo, Valeska Chilviet; flautist Ye Na Lee; and photographer Sharon Tan. A special thank you to Father Ernie, whose parochial duties have been expanded to celebrating Masses with our students; and to M. Marcuzzi, for creating the Ordinary of the Mass on PowerPoint and for coordinating the liturgy. FACE-À-FACE AVEC UN PERSONNAGE HISTORIQUE: For their tâche finale (Unité 5), grade 9 Academic Angela Tobia, in the role of Ste French Thérèse de Lisieux, with interviewers classes had Sonia Sansalone and Polina Kvartyrmeister the opportunity to interview a French historic figure: from French-Canadian saint frère André Bessette to French tennis player and creator of the eponym tennis shirt, René HONOURING MARY: ST. APRIL, MAY ‘RÉBUS’: Congratulations to Elia Gurevich who cracked the April junior Rébus, tête-à-tête (= one-to-one / one-on-one talk (meeting/ interview); and to senior winner Christian Cordero for à bras ouverts (= with open arms). The May winner was Chris Kovalev (La vache = Holy cow!). Rébus winners each received $5 TimCards for their correct responses which were drawn in the monthly contest. SCRABBLEMANIE! (WEEK OF MAY 26): Six classes of grade 9 French battled it out in a Scrabble pairs competition to determine the champions for second semester. Solo word buff Kasra Asgarpour (Unique) emerged as the victor, following a series of well-contested matches. “La prière… la clef du matin et le verrou du soir” (O. Feltham): On June 13, lectors from Team Lavoix were recognized for their contribution to our French Friday prayer offerings over the P.A. The initiative – which had been a First Friday (of the month) offering last year – blossomed into a weekly one on December 6th, feast of St. Nicholas; the Prière pour l’avent and Préparons noël avec la sainte Vierge Marie on this day served as a wonderful opening to the season of Advent. ►Lavoix members received Certificates of Appreciation for their efforts in sharing the anthem, prayer, and lections (en français) with our community Derraugh opens Viva XII with ‘Ô Canada’; Angel Shon performs ‘You Raise Me Up’; M. Ernie DeCiccio, St. FRENCH FOR THE FUTURE, APRIL 25. Over 200 students from immersion, core, extended and Francophone schools attended the 17th edition of the Toronto Local Forum, at York University’s Glendon campus. The ten St. Theresa students who attended the Forum were treated to an unforgettable day of interactive workshops focused on the benefits of bilingualism in Canada. Students had the opportunity to meet other future leaders like themselves and network with dynamic bilingual professionals. lookingAHEAD SEPTEMBER: (5) Team Lavoix kicks off its weekly prayer-sharing over the P.A.; (12): The Language Clinic begins its tensession remedial offering, open to all firstsemester French students: Fridays, to November 7; (15) Course teachers send Notification Letters to parents regarding initial student diagnostic; Theresa Chapel; Report Card distribution; (12) Parent-Teacher Interviews; (21): Film-viewing at YCDSB Theatre for Grade 9 French classes; WEEK OF DECEMBER 1: Scrabblemanie: French Scrabble pairs tournament among six classes of Grade 9 French; JANUARY 23-29, 2015: Semester I final examinations. QUELLE BELLE JOURNÉE!: On May 28, our grade 11 and 12 French classes, accompanied by M. Puopolo and M. Marcuzzi, attended a special Mass at Toronto’s Paroisse du Sacré-Cœur. In his well-crafted homily, celebrant Abbé Justin Desroches spoke of the Mass as being a beautiful encounter with Jesus. Sincere thanks to lectors Antonio Lollino, Seongwoo Ahn and Valentina Filozop; photographer Sharon Tan; flautist Ye Na; and M. Marcuzzi, for organizing the excursion. Following the liturgy, the group headed to Queen Street’s Café Crêpe, where they enjoyed camaraderie and… fresh-to-order crêpes appétissantes.
