In a few days time we shall again give thanks for the Liberation of our Island in the Spring of 1945 from Nazi occupation, and I invite you to not only make a holiday of Friday 9 May, but to gather at Ebenezer Methodist Church at 9.15 am to give thanks, to join in with the Island celebrations, and to find a quiet moment to reflect on the human cost of victory in the war in Europe that once again brought liberty to the Channel Islands. Thereafter there is of course the traditional Sitting of the States, and then the service, re-enactments and celebrations in Liberation Square which are always worth attending. But 2014 also brings the one hundredth anniversary of the commencement of the First World War. Britain declared war on Germany on 4 August 1914 and none could have foreseen the protracted horrors that followed. On Sunday 3 August this year there will be special services at the Parish Church, services of remembrance and of vigil - more details will be available nearer the time. However, now is a good time, if you haven’t already, to engage with the Royal British Legion’s 2014 Commemorative Poppy Seed Campaign. This invites us to sow Flanders poppy seeds this spring and over the next four years as an act of remembrance and commemoration. These seeds can be sown in the garden, hedgerows or open spaces so that their flowers will be a poignant reminder of all those who served and fell. The British Legion is selling seeds through B&Q and the modest price includes a donation to the RBL and their work. I commend this simple and imaginative initiative to you. Thank you to all who feel able to respond to the Christian Aid collection, your kindness and thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated. May we live simply, that others may simply live. In all the remembering, all the busyness and festivities of this month, may we know God’s blessing and peace.
