Seamless integration of data
services over unused capacity
SCU - SPARE CAPACITY UTILIZATION
SCU - Spare Capacity Utilization - adds the
capability of utilizing all left-over capacity
after allocation of premium services, to be
used for elastic data services, thus combining guaranteed service for premium services
with full utilization of the network links.
The Nimbra MSR provides a guaranteed
QoS for premium services such as video and
audio in order for broadcasters and media
network operators to provide the best possible service with simple SLAs for their customers.
There is however also a need to use the
spare capacity that is left-over when the premium services have allocated their capaci-
ties, for elastic services such as LAN traffic,
background file transfers etc, in order to
have best return on the investment on the
infrastucture cost.
SCU solves this by enabling all un-used
capacity on a network link for Ethernet traffic
without impacting the premium services in any
way.
By using SCU it is thus possible to combine the guaranteed properties for premium
services with 100% utilization of the network
links. Besides using the functionality to fill
the network links with elastic Ethernet traffic
when not using the links for premium services, it can also be used to activate redundant
capacity that is normally not used.
SCU combines guaranteed QoS
properties for premium services
with 100% utilization of the network links.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Feature license activated functionality in
NimOS
Maintenance: Remote software download
Supported hardware:Nimbra 390/380/320/310 (IP & SDH)
Nimbra 600 (IP & SDH)
(Nimbra 600 requires Ethernet Access
plug-in module installed in the node)
Function:
Pre-emption of one ETS channel (the “SCU-ETS
channel”) over one trunk link hop by all other services. Pre-emption means that the SCU-ETS channel adapts its capacity to allocate all free bandwidth
on the trunk link at all times. By connecting several
SCU-ETS channels using Forwarding Functions,
a layer 2 Ethernet network is formed. This layer 2
network support CoS and VLAN separation through
the Forwarding Functions and have variable capacity links.

Configuration: Committed and Excessive capacity limits for the
SCU-ETS channel.
Usage conditions: One unicast SCU-ETS can be enabled per trunk link.
The SCU-ETS channel must terminate in a Forwarding Function on each side of the trunk link. Capacity
can not be pre-empted over the backplane of an
MSR, only on the trunk links, which may limit the
usable capacity in some configurations.
