New York, August 1, 2014 – Volunteers of America-Greater New York, Inc., one of New York City’s
largest private providers of services to at-risk families and individuals, and the City’s largest provider of
supportive housing for veterans, announces the appointment of Tere Pettitt as President and CEO. Pettitt
previously served as the organization’s Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer since 2002.
As President and CEO, Pettitt oversees a staff of 1,300 and an operating budget of $100 million.
Volunteers of America-Greater New York operates more than 90 social service programs in New York
City, Westchester County, Northern New Jersey and on Long Island.
“Over the last dozen years, Tere has distinguished herself as a skilled leader and trusted advocate who
has very much earned this new role,” said Eric Gies, chairman of the Volunteers of America-Greater
New York board of directors. “Additionally, Tere’s vast experience in healthcare administration will
serve us well as our clients’ needs become more complicated and the human services landscape evolves.
We are thrilled to welcome her to this new position.”
Pettitt’s primary focus during her tenure at Volunteers of America-Greater New York has been to ensure
that the organization’s programs adhere to the highest quality standards, as well as identify new areas
where the organization can provide community-based assistance to those in need. She has
managed Volunteers of America-Greater New York’s diverse range of programs that serve a number of
populations with special needs including chronically homeless families and individuals, adults living
with behavioral health issues and HIV/AIDS, families recovering from domestic violence, adults and
children with developmental disabilities, older adults, at-risk youth and veterans.
Pettitt previously spent 25 years in a variety of key positions at New York United Hospital Medical
Center in Port Chester, New York. Her experience there, including several years as Executive Vice
President and Chief Operating Officer, involved managing all aspects of the hospital’s health care
delivery system.
Pettitt received her MA in Social Work from NYU and subsequently became a licensed certified social
worker and a licensed New York State Nursing Home Administrator. In addition, she has a MA in
Philosophy from Villanova University with a concentration in medical ethics and American Philosophy.
Pettitt is succeeding Claire Haaga Altman, who is departing Volunteers of America-Greater New York
to pursue new opportunities. The Board expressed its gratitude to Altman for her tremendous
contributions to strengthening the organization and laying the groundwork for its current strategic plan.
