TO OFFER SUPPORTERS
AN OPPORTUNITY OF A
LIFETIME TO KENYA
The trip will support the African
Adventures’ annual Community
Development Pledge, which supports
and invests in the projects and areas
volunteers visit. Funds will also be
raised to support the work of West
Ham United Community Sports Trust,
which serves the local community,
meaning the event will make a lasting
impact in both the UK and Africa.
From 23rd May 2015 - 7th June 2015,
a team of West Ham United supporters
will visit Nakuru in Kenya to spend
either 8 or 15 days volunteering in
schools.
You can pay for the trip yourself
or help fundraise. Whatever your
circumstances - we want you on the
plane!
“Its incredibly rewarding and humbling for all the
volunteers to experience such a different culture whilst
offering long term support to the wonderful children and
staff whose spirit continues to amaze every time we visit.”

ABOUT WEST HAM
UNITED COMMUNITY
SPORTS TRUST
The West Ham United Community
Sports Trust works for the benefit of
the public generally and, in particular,
the inhabitants of London and the
surrounding areas.
The Trust’s charitable objectives are as
follows:
• To promote community participation
in healthy recreation by providing
facilities for the playing of association
football and other sports capable of
improving health
• To provide and assist in providing
facilities for sport, recreation or other
leisure time occupation of such
persons, who have a need for such
facilities by reasons of their youth,
age, infirmity or disability, poverty or
social and economic circumstances or
for the public at large in the interests
of social welfare and with the object
of improving their conditions of life
• To advance the education of children
and young people through such
means as the trustees think fit in
accordance with the law of charity
“I think the entire trip was organised extremely well,
with great attention to detail. As a volunteer I had
nothing to concern myself with other than giving my
all and going on planned excursions.”
- Judy McConnell, 2014 Volunteer

ABOUT KENYA
clean running water.
Kenya is a beautifully diverse nation that
encapsules everything magical about
sub-Saharan Africa.
Through tourism, agriculture and
telecommunications industries, the
country has boasted impressive
economic growth and is in many ways
regarded as a wealthy nation. The
capital Nairobi is considered to be the
economic hub of East Africa.
However, 40% of the population
continue to live off less than 75p per day
and do not have immediate access to
There are no free healthcare, state
support or food allowances.
Like many other developing nations,
there is a huge disparity between
the rich and the poor, without the
infrastructure or safety net to support
many of those in need.
Our work in Kenya is based in the town
of Nakuru. We work with ten schools
and approximately 2000 young people.
West Ham United Community Sports
Trust will focus on helping 1000 of
these.
“I am the In-Country Director for African
Adventures here in Kenya. I’ve been working
with volunteers for over 10 years and love
welcoming new volunteers to our projects.”
- Alex Maina

COMMUNITY
DEVELOPMENT PLEDGE

families typically live off less than 75p a

these projects and details our support
over the course of a year. The Community
Development Pledge enables volunteers

HOW YOU CAN HELP
Volunteers bring our work to life. Your
time and effort will leave a tangible
legacy at the project you support.
Most of our volunteers have never
volunteered in the UK before, let
alone Africa, so rest assured that we
are here to help you get the most
from your trip!
You can assist the projects in three
main roles, detailed in the next
couple of pages of this brochure.
However, before you get started, you
need to think about a few things:
• Volunteers need to be patient and
flexible because arrangements
often change and things can often
take a long time to get done
• Volunteers will be challenged
and put out of their comfort zone,
particularly in the first few days
• Volunteers need to be ready to
learn, as well as give and work

“Amazing experience - it taught me so much
and the children were so wonderful. The
project is under my skin and I’m there next
year!” - Melody Simms, 2014 Volunteer

VOLUNTEER ROLES
COMMUNITY WORK
WITH CHILDREN &
TEACHING IN SCHOOLS
This is our most popular volunteer
role because it encompasses a
broad range of activities, enabling
first-time volunteers to get a full
flavour of project life. The role
includes:
• Reading stories to children
• Helping to prepare, cook and
serve meals for children
• Helping to set homework and
mark papers
• Teach subjects such as English,
Maths, Music, Art, Science
• Deliver your own lessons (in
part, until you feel comfortable)
• Mark papers
Volunteers helping in this role
have access to our handy Volunteer
Resource Portal for lesson plans
and ideas! Click here to read more.
“At my school, our students need your time,
your motivation and your care. My teachers
need your support, your patience and hard
work.” - Yuvenalis, Head Teacher, St. Trizah School

VOLUNTEER ROLES
COMMUNITY BUILDING
MULTI-SPORTS
Volunteers who like to get their hands
dirty and see a project through from
start to finish are welcome to join our
building programme, which focuses on
the development of schools.
Each of the schools we work with run
a basic PE/multi-sports programme,
which can vary in its frequency and
sports.
Work can range from building
classrooms and kitchens to painting and
installing running water.
Project work will be planned in advance
of your trip but requires a minimum of
five volunteers.
Volunteers who are proactive and
enthusiastic can hold their own sports
sessions. You need not be qualified,
though experience is naturally
beneficial.
There is also an opportunity to coach
football in the early evening at around
5pm.
“Excellent organisation that helped co-ordinate
an unforgettable trip. I would urge anyone who
is thinking of using African Adventures to do so,
you won’t regret it!”
- John Hames, 2014 Volunteer

FUNDRAISING
Fundraising can be a huge help in
supporting your financial ability to come
on the trip. It can be fun and there are
lots of things you can do ro raise money!
Before you get started, think about:
• Involving people you know - they
will want to help!
• JustGiving - set up an online
page through West Ham United
Community Sports Trust’s JustGiving
page and increase followers on
Facebook and Twitter!
• Instead of asking birthday presents
this year, ask your friends and family
to donate to your trip!
• Match funding - over 150 companies
in the UK have a match-funding
scheme which means they will
match whatever you raise. Ask your
company if they’re involved!
• Organising events that are fun and
innovative - quiz nights, sports
tournaments, world record attempts,
lotteries!
“The more effort you put in the more
you get. Every pound you earn through
