FOURTH SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME - FEBRUARY 1, 2015 We are glad you joined us! We are a Eucharistic Community whose mission is to be “Saints Alive” by knowing, loving, and serving God. Through study, piety, and action, in imitation of the Saints, we answer God’s call to stewardship. Our weekly bulletin is one of the ways we share what’s going on in our parish and in the Catholic world. We are told “to him you shall listen.” This is our message today. Jesus is beginning his ministry. He comes first to the Israelites in their synagogue where “he taught them as one having authority and not as the scribes.” We see even the unclean spirits obey him. As we break open the Gospel of Mark we will hear Jesus’ words as he teaches his disciples and attempts to make the Jewish leaders understand who he is. We too must listen to him. “Anyone who has ears to hear ought to hear.” He also told them “Take care what you hear.” (Mk 4:23-24) Painting above: “Christ’s Sermon in the Temple” (1840-1858) by Alexander Ivanov Masses Monday, February 2 NO MASS Tuesday, February 3 NO MASS Wednesday, February 4 NO MASS Thursday, February 5 NO MASS Friday, February 6 NO MASS Saturday, February 7 NO Life and Mercy Mass 4:30 p.m. Sunday, February 8 8:30 a.m. 10:30 a.m. (PAC) Readings Intentions Feast of the Presentation of the Lord Mal 3:1–4; Ps 24; Heb 2:14-18; Lk 2:22-40 Heb 12:1-4; Ps 22; Mk 5:21-43 Heb 12:4-7,11-15; Ps 103; Mk 6:1-6 Heb 12:18–19,21-24; Ps 48; Mk 6:7-13 Memorial of Saint Paul Miki and Companions, Martyrs Heb 13:1-8; Ps 27; Mk 6:14-29 Heb 13:15-17, 20-21; Ps 23; Mk 6:30-34 (4:30 Mass see below) Job 7:1-4, 6-7; Ps 147; 1 Cor 9:16-19, 22-23; Mk 1:29-39 All Masses are at the church unless otherwise indicated. + Monnin Family + Mary Mapes +People of the Parish Saints Alive! Born: 1562 Died: February 5, 1597 Memorial: February 6 Canonized: June 8, 1862 The only reason for my being killed is that I have taught the doctrine of Christ. I thank God it is for this reason that I die. I believe that I am telling the truth before I die. I know you believe me and I want to say to you all once again: Ask Christ to help you become happy. I obey Christ. After Christ’s example, I forgive my persecutors. I do not hate them. I ask God to have pity on all, and I hope my blood will fall on my fellow men as a fruitful rain. ~ Saint Paul Miki Learn more: http://saints.sqpn.com/saint-paul-miki/ Pray • Next weekend we celebrate World Marriage Day and honor a special couple from St. Joseph Church. Works of Mercy Project Update The PSR children and parents have been so generous in their lunch packing gifts we have been able to help out more Neighbors in Need. Fairbanks School’s program that provides weekend lunch foods to children in need within that district benefited from some of the collected foods. And we still have plenty of non-perishable lunch box food to complete another 50 lunches on March 9. Next UP: St. Valentine Concession Stand and making Valentine’s for the elderly. February 9. From Homeless to Home In a letter to our parishes, Bishop Campbell has requested our attention to this important matter: This February, our Diocese is rallying support for the homeless. There has been a significant increase in homelessness among Central Ohio citizens. More than 3,000 children were uprooted from their homes and had to live in a homeless shelter in 2014. On too many nights, adults are turned away from shelters that are filled to capacity. Please visit: fromhomelesstohome.org for ideas and ways to help. Read more at USCCB.org/news www.saintjosephplaincity.com Page 4 Weekly Scripture Challenge~ by Tim Rimmer As we read the Gospel of Mark this liturgical year, pay attention to how often Jesus encounters Satan and his soldiers. What is the first action Jesus takes after being baptized? He confronts Satan in the desert. Why? Because Satan is sin and death and the force that veils mankind from the Father. Jesus has come to reconcile us to the Father and to destroy the dominion of Satan. This theme is echoed in today’s reading when an unclean spirit asks Jesus “Have you come to destroy us?” High School Kids and Parents!
