NEWS RELEASE Young Environmental Leaders gather one last time for 2014 Last week the fourth and final Young Environmental leaders (YEL) forum for 2014 was held in the Upper Murray region of the South Australian MurrayDarling Basin (SAMDB). Upper Murray YEL hosted a massive 47 smiling, enthusiastic students and 12 teachers at the Barmera Yacht Club for a day which was filled with fun, animals, food and presentations. Upper Murray YEL students came from primary schools across the Riverland: Loxton North, Waikerie Lutheran, Ramco, Kingston-on-Murray, Barmera St Josephs, Barmera, Monash, Berri, Our Lady of the River, Loxton, Loxton Lutheran and Renmark. The final forum was an opportunity to celebrate and recognise student achievements in 2014, what they had learned from the previous three forums, and to come together and meet people from the other schools. Upper Murray Natural Resources SAMDB NRM Education Project Officer Bec Stevens said the morning started with a human scavenger hunt, in which students were tasked with finding 12 different students who have done things such as skimmed a stone, fallen off a bike, been geocaching, planted a tree and made a mud pie. “It was a great activity, mixing children up and getting them to talk with children they did not know.” Students were asked to come up with an inventive presentation about something they had enjoyed or learned from YEL this year in the most entertaining way possible. “One school did a song, another did a play and one conducted an interview like the Totally Wild TV show!” “I was interviewed by them too—the presentations were really well thought out and very creative. I thoroughly enjoyed them,” Ms Stevens said. A prize was presented to Our Lady of the River Primary School for the best creative presentation and for a whole-school commitment to living a sustainable future. 18 November 2014 MEDIA CONTACT Jayne Miller Media Project Officer Natural Resources SA Murray-Darling Basin Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources Phone (08) 8580 1811 Mobile 0467 762 107 Email [email protected] www.environment.sa.gov.au www.naturalresources.sa.gov .au/samurraydarlingbasin NEWS RELEASE Each YEL student from Our Lady of the River received a copy of the book River Boy. YEL students were entertained by guest presenters Animals Anonymous who provided hands-on activities for the YEL members with live native animals. “They were so entertaining and funny, the kids had a ball and learned so much about our native wildlife—the animals were a definite hit!” Ms Stevens said. The Upper Murray YEL forum ended with presentation of certificates and gifts from SAMDB Natural Resources Management Board member Peter Duggin. The Young Environmental Leaders Program will be run again in 2015. It is open to year 5-7 students in all schools in the SAMDB region.
