The Way Forward
In the past year, YEL has continued with its process of discussion on how it can
strengthen its structures. It is now time for the organisation to discuss the way
forward for effectively implementing its plan.
With this in mind, the organisation will embark on a project aimed at building
stronger structures and possibly establishing YEL branches in other countries. In
the past years, YEL has been developing its ideas for the establishment of YEL
branches. It is now time to plan ahead and implement such ideas.
On a local level, YEL has been fostering leadership skills amongst its Executive
committee members. In the AGM it aims at approving a plan for empowering its
Executive members to take more prominent roles in the organisation with the aim
of continuously improving the organisation through motivation, experience and
innovation.
YEL’s motto: Explore, Aspire Achieve signifies the process that YEL is going
through. In the past years, we have explored opportunities, now is the time to
aspire to take YEL to the next level, to achieve its goals in the best ways possible.

During the last Annual General Meeting a new executive committee was set up to
continue the work which was already done during the past years. Certain sections
continued to work on projects which were successful which others were working
on new projects mostly by planning and preparing for events to be held in the
second part of the term of the executive.
During this year, the executive committee meet a number of times to discuss the
organisation of a number of events while also the sections had a number of
meetings together with other organisations in order to discuss the organisation of
these events.

Law and Financial Services
As members of YEL we are planning to organise a seminar focusing specifically on
recent developments in financial services legislation mainly the legislation regulating
the payment services sector. YEL plans on having a panel that will involve
representatives from the Central Bank of Malta, MFSA, MCCAA and the Malta
Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise. It is likely to take place in October/November
2014.
The aim of this seminar is to give an overview of some of the recent developments
that are taking place in the financial services sector namely the area of payments
services and will be directed at local credit and financial institutions and other
entities/professionals and students specialising in this field. It will focus on the
ongoing discussions taking place at EU Level regarding the proposal of a second
Payment Services Directive (PSD2), the implementation and effects of SEPA
Regulation (EU Regulation 260/2012) and the Proposal for a Regulation on
Interchange Fees for card-based transactions (referred to as 'MIF' Regulation). The
seminar will include a discussion initiated by a panel of speakers explaining the scope
of each of these legislative texts, their core features, the main changes that are likely
to be brought in the EU market and in the local market including the banking sector in
Malta, the impact on consumers and the way forward in addressing any present
shortcomings in the local market.
Another event involves interviewing a Judge whilst having the participation of law
students in the discussion following the interview. The scope behind this interview is
for the students to get to know the Judge, the work challenges that he encounters on a
daily basis and a possible discussion on court cases decided by this Judge.
Attended meetings on the organisation of court visits in October 2014. The aim
behind these court visits is to take law students to court to attend court sessions and
visit the Court Registry whilst explaining all its functions and to help students
familiarise themselves with court work
Social Entrepreneurship & Leadership
Since the European theme for this year was, reconciling work and family life, the SEL
team discussed the theme of women leadership with local organisations to possibly

organise events on this theme. The SEL section was also in contact with student
organisations to discuss events on social entreprensurship. It has also explored the
possibility of working with Caritas on a project promoting corporate social
responsbility amongst small businesses in a particular locality.
Tourism, Sport and Culture
The Tourism Sports and Culture segment has in the past years organised a number of
social events with the aim of encouraging team work, cooperation between people,
and also increasing the entrepreneurial spirit within youth. One of such events was the
segway event at Selmun where a number of youths including members and non
memers of YEL have joined in the event. The segway was a good way to discover the
untouched surrounding of Selmun palace since some places on the cliff side and
fields overlooking the beach of Selmun that are only accessible by foot, no vehicles
can enter. The event gave a good insight of Malta’s natural heritage and a new way to
explore our islands through the newly introduced sport in Malta, The Segway, which
is at present also used for tourists tours in order to discover off the beaten track areas
of the Maltese Islands.
YEL is looking into organising another social and sports event – archery. This is
aimed at promoting team building whilst exposing young people to a different sports
tourism attraction in the Maltese Islands. This will show the participants how niche
tourism can be utilised through a combination of history and adventure.
YEL has also discussed the possiility of working with Caritas on a project that
promotes social corporate responsability by private entities which will be enourgared
to contribute donations for projects aimed at improving the social, environment and
tourism sector of the locality in which they operate. This has to be further developed
and discussed in order to choose the ideal locality and measures how to take it
forward.
Enviroment, Health and Education
The Environment, Health and Education section has worked on encouraging young
people to contribute through the creation of a sub-committee. This section will
continue to aim at recruiting young people to assist in creating events that may be
organised regularly in the future.
