Long, Thin Objects (Inanimate)
• Long, slender, and inanimate things are counted
with "本" ("hon/bon/pon")
一本 (ippon), 二本 (nihon), 三本 (sanbon), ...
• For example:
1 Straw = 一本
4 Pencils = 四本
Small Animals
• Small animals are counted with "一匹"
("hiki/biki/piki")
一匹 (ippiki), 二匹 (nihiki), 三匹 (sanbiki), ...
• For example:
3 dogs = 三匹
2 snakes =二匹
Large Animals
• Larger animals are counted with "頭" ("tou")
一頭(ittou),二頭(nittou), 三頭(santou), …
• For example:
5 Elephants = 五頭
Stages of Tuna
• Swimming in the ocean = 一匹 (ippiki)
• Caught = 一本 (ippon)
• First cut in the market = 一丁 (icchou)
• Cut up further into small pieces =ひところ (hitokoro)
• Cut thin and packed in the supermarket = 一冊 (hitosaku)
