What Hidehira Wanted To Protect.

Do you know Fujiwara Hidehira? He cried for peace for a long time and
governed the utopia, Hiraizumi. I can feel his hope when I look out over Hiraizumi.
Fujiwara Kiyohira began to administer Hiraizumi. His motto was “Calm all
spirits whether they are enemies or friends. Make Hiraizumi the symbol of peace. “In
the past, he lost his families and his friends through the war. Kiyohira built Chusonji
temple with the hope never to repeat the war. And the third general Fujiwara Hidehira
succeeded to this wish. Hidehira built many buildings in order to get rid of wars,
expressing his strong hope for peace. Moutsuji , Muryoukouin and so on. Especially, I
can feel his strong message for peace in Muryoukouin. In this building, I can feel the
message ``Over the Hoo-do Hall the Phoenix Pabilion of Byodo-in Temple, the symbol of
peace in Kyoto.” Hidehira wanted to make a pure land of perfect bliss.
And, I can feel his hope for peace through what he did. It was the fact that he
protected Yoshitsune Minamoto from Yoritomo Minamoto. Yoshitsune escaped from
Yoritomo Minamoto because Yoritomo tried to kill Yoshitsune. Hidehira feel sorry for
Yoshitsune. So he invited Yoshitsune to Hiraizumi and allowed him to live in Hiraizumi.
He tried to realize what Kiyohira left in Hiraizumi. ``Calm all spirits whether they are
enemies or friends.’’.Hidehira had wanted to make it come true. Even though he got the
risk that Yoritomo would attack Hiraizumi, he was faithful to his belief. And In a time
of wars, he tried to find solutions without wars.
We know that war makes sadness, no hope. Everybody knows that war is not
good. But still now, we have wars around the world. Why? And how can we make the
world without wars? Is there any ways to create the “peace”?
I think we have three steps that we can do.
First, we have to have an interest and curiosity to other countries. It is
important to have “Why?” or “How?” to all things when we look at other cultures,
religions, history and so on. Now, we have a lot of information surrounding us. News on
TV, Internet and mobile phones can give us information anytime and anywhere. No
matter how far it is, we can know anything if we want. And it is an interest and
curiosity that give the information meanings. If we find the differences and the
meanings among other countries’ cultures, history, religion, we can find the new things
that we have never noticed. Then, we come to want to know more. In short, an interest
and curiosity are the keys to broaden our world.
Second, we have to improve our English to communicate. We need language to
communicate with many people. We can use English as common language when we
share and exchange our opinions. If we can exchange our opinions, we can notice the
things that we have not noticed by ourselves. We need to improve the ability to listen to
and the ability to talk with in order to exchange our opinions.
Third, we have to propagate the information about our country. To know each
other means to understand each other. If we understand each other, it will lead to
abolish misunderstanding and prejudice. We should propagate about ourselves before
others get interested in us. If we do so, many people get to understand each other. It
will change the world.
I will try these three steps. Hidehira gave me these three steps to the peace.
This is my answer to what Hidehira left in Hiraizumi.
秀衡の守りたかったもの

あなたは藤原秀衡を知っているだろうか？彼は長い間平和への思いを叫び続け、そして
平泉を統治した。私は平泉を見ると、彼の願いを感じることができる。
最初は藤原清衡が平泉を統治した。彼のモットーは、
「敵味方関係なくすべての魂を鎮め
る。平泉を平和の象徴として治める。」だった。昔、彼は戦争で家族や友人を失った。そん
な清衡は二度と戦争を繰り返さないという願いを込めて中尊寺を建てたのだ。そして、三
代目の藤原秀衡がこの願いを受け継いだ。秀衡は毛越寺、無量光院などを建てた。特に、
私は彼の強いメッセージを無量光院から感じ取ることができる。その建物には、
「平等院鳳
凰堂を超える」というメッセージが込められている。彼は自分の国に極楽浄土を作りたか
ったのだ。
そして、私は彼の行動からも平和への願いを感じ取ることができる。それは、源義経を
源頼朝から守ったという事実だ。義経は頼朝から逃げてきた。なぜなら、頼朝は義経を殺
そうとしたからだ。秀衡は義経を哀れみ、義経を平泉に招き入れ、そして住まわせた。彼
は清衡の残した願いを実現すると誓った。「敵味方関係なく、すべての魂を鎮める。」義経
を招き入れることで頼朝に平泉が滅ぼされるという危険がありながらも、彼の信念を貫き
通した。そして戦乱の時代の中、戦をせず朝廷と問題を解決しようとしていた。
私たちは、戦争が悲しみを作り出し、希望を作り出さないことを知っている。みんな、
戦争がよくないものだと知っている。しかし今でも、戦争は世界中で起きている。なぜだ
ろうか？そして、私たちはどのようにして戦争のない世界を作ることができるのだろうか。
平和を作り出すための方法はあるのだろうか？
私は、次の三つのことに挑戦したい。
一つ目は、私たちはほかの国に対して興味や好奇心を持つべきだと思う。私たちはほか
の国の文化や宗教などを見るとき、「なぜ？」や、「どのように？」という気持ちを持つこ
とはとても大事だ。現在私たちは多くの情報に囲まれている。テレビのニュースやインタ
ーネットなど、距離や時間に関係なく、必要な情報を得ることができる。その情報に意味
をつけるのが興味や好奇心だと思う。ほかの国の文化や歴史、宗教の中に自国との違いに
気付くことが出来たとき、今まで気付かなかったことに気付くことができ、そしてもっと
多くのことを知りたいと思うようになる。つまり興味や好奇心が私たちの世界を広げてく
れるのだ。
二つ目は、私たちは気持ちを伝えるために英語の力を伸ばすべきだと思う。私たちは、
多くの人に自分の思いを伝えるには共通の言語が必要だ。同じ言葉を使えることができた
とき、私たちは自分の意見を交換することができる。国際言語となっている英語を使える
ようになることでほとんどの国の人たちと話し合うことができる。意見を交換し合うこと
はとても大事で、自分ひとりでは気付けなかったことができ、相手が知らなかったことを
伝えることができる。意見を交換することができるための、「聞く力」「話す力」を養って
いくことが必要だ。
三つ目は、私たちは自分の国についての情報を広めるべきだと思う。お互いを知ること
は、お互いを理解することにつながる。お互いを理解していれば、誤解や偏見はなくなる
と思う。相手が自分に興味を持つのを待つのではなく、自ら発信することが大切だ。こう
やってくりかえしていくうちに、広める人たちも増え、理解している人たちも増えていく。
この繰り返しの中で、世界は少しずつ変わっていくと思う。
私はこれら三つのことに挑戦する。秀衡はこの三つを私に与えてくれた。これが秀衡が
平泉に残したものへの私の答えだ。
