Pastor’s Letter
Dear Parishioners,
We had a prayerful Divine Mercy Sunday celebration at St. John of the Woods’ Church. We thank the core team who organized it. It was a wonderful celebration with Mass and fellowship. We thank Father Laga who made his commitment to celebrate it. We thank the volunteers at St. John of the Woods who are working on an extra parking space in front of the parish
office. It took a lot of hard work from the maintenance committee to plan and work on this project. The Easter Season is a
joyful and happy time for our regional parishes. We thank you for making your commitment to do works of charity and for
your participation in the Rice Bowl during the Lenten Season. We are still counting the Rice Bowl money and once this is
completed, we will send your contribution to the Archdiocese office (for missionary work). We thank each member of each
family who have returned the Rice Bowl boxes to us.
You have received a letter from Archbishop Peter asking you to participate in the Annual Catholic Appeal. There are more
than 63 ministries that receive support from this campaign. Your participation is very important for this campaign. You will
also be receiving my letter asking you to support this campaign. The benefit of this campaign will also support the special project that our parishes want to do. In my letter an explanation on the project from each of the parishes is provided. Therefore,
we need to obtain the goal to receive the rebate to work on these projects.
We thank many of you who volunteered to help us with the landscaping of the parish grounds and making sure that the parish
ground is clean and looks beautiful, to make those who come feel warm and welcome. We thank those families who have
signed up to care for different areas of the parish grounds at St. John of the Woods’ Church. It is a commitment to keep up
with the watering and keeping all the flowers blooming. We are very impressed with the grounds of each of our parish. We
thank God for sending us these volunteers who are a good at making all the plants and flowers healthy and looking beautiful.
We thank our four Missionary Workers of the Words from Sacred Heart’s Church who served us for the last six months and
they have left us with much joy and peace. They have asked me to send their thanks to you for your support and for allowing
them to serve us. They had a very successful vocation retreat at Sacred Heart during Holy Week. They had 53 young men and
women who participated in this retreat day. They have 18 young men and women who responded to their vocation call to join
their order and missionary work, and they attended the discernment week in California last week. There are five of them who
have made their commitment to serve the Church for a few years. It is a joy of the Resurrection of our Lord and I am very happy to see many young men and women who have responded to the vocation call to serve. I will introduce to you the new group
of missionary workers, so you know their names and can support them. They have bible study in Spanish and English and they
are assisting us with the Outreach Ministry for the Latino community.
We thank the parish leadership from each parish who spent time to meet with me this month. I spent time during my retreat
after Easter to work on the parish budget (draft) for the parish leadership to review and study it before they approve and recommend to me for final approval for the coming year. We spent a little time to review this year’s budget, to make sure we are on
track in accordance with the planned budget. I thank the parish leadership for their time to review not only the monthly finance,
but they are also making sure that we have sufficient funds to fund the ministry that we need to have for our parishes.
I was very impressed with the Children’s choir from the Vietnamese Catholic group at St. Ann’s Church. They are regrouping
after a long break. We thank their parents who have made their commitment to work with us and for registering their children
for this ministry and supporting it. I am also very impressed with all the CCD children who have signed up for the May crowning and they practice each week for this event. I was so surprised to see many children come for the Easter Egg Hunt at St.
John of the Woods’ Church and St. Ann’s Church on Easter Sunday. I hope that some of the parents took pictures or video of
the event to post it on the parish website, so you can see how much fun all the children had at this event. We thank the Parish
Youth Group at St. Ann’s Church who organized the Easter Egg Hunt at St. Ann’s Church and we thank the American Heritage
Girl Troop parents at St. John of the Woods’ Church who organized this event there.
We thank the Long Range Plan Vision 2017 Implementation core team who met last week to review the Charter document that
they had agreed to do (provide a quarterly report from different areas of the plan). For this Vision 2017 to be successful, a
strong commitment is required, so we have to be focused on what we want to implement (to make it possible). A good communication on the part of the Implementation core team is important to keep all different groups under their care informed (report
and they are able to follow through). The core team wants to create a communication team to assist them in communicating
and sharing the good news of each accomplishment. I thank the core team for their commitment and thank them for their faithfulness to serve us in this area.
We thank the Faith Formation Program who is returning after Spring break and it is so wonderful to welcome the entire students back to school after the Easter celebration. May the Lord continue to bless upon you and your family! We thank you for
your continue support of our parish ministry and mission.
Sincerely Yours in Christ,

Meatless Fridays
ST. ANN:
8:30am - 7:00pm Thursdays
5pm - 7pm Tuesdays Divine Mercy & Mass (Samoan Comm.)
7:00pm Fridays Mass (Vietnamese Language)
by Barbara & Clarence Leingang
Up until 1966 when Pope Paul VI allowed the USCCB to make
changes in the laws concerning abstinence, the Latin Rite of the
Catholic Church followed the rule to abstain from meat every
Friday. The reason for abstaining was a reminder that Christ died
on a Friday. Fasting and Abstinence are closely related but there
are differences. Fasting is the restriction on the quantity of food;
Abstinence is the avoidance of particular foods i.e. meat. History
tells us that in the 4th century, the Western Church abstained on
Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday. By the 12 th century, the requirement was for Ash Wednesday and Friday only. Friday abstinence from meat was not only a remembrance of the Lord’s
Passion but also an act of communal penance. After Vatican II,
the interpretation was redefined to determine more precisely the
observance of fast and abstinence as well as to substitute other
forms of penance. The law of the Latin rite is that Catholics abstain from meat on all Fridays throughout the year, (except solemnities) as well as Ash Wednesday. Canon 1251 permits the
USCCB to substitute some other food for meat on those days.
Canon 1254 goes one step further by stating the Bishops can even
choose other forms of penance in place of abstaining from meat.
The Bishops “terminated” the law that stated a Catholic sins if
he eats meat on Friday. The Church still recommends abstaining
from meat on Friday all year and not just during Lent. Friday
itself remains a special day of penitential observance or works of
voluntary self-denial throughout the year. The Conference of
Catholic Bishops would like to see the Catholic community continue the practice of abstaining from meat on Friday, even though
they are not obligated to do so. The USCCB has been debating
the possibility of the Faithful returning to Friday abstinence.
This practice would be an expression of our Catholicity and reparation for the grave sin of abortion.

April 25: St. Mark the Evangelist (Feast)
Mark lived at the time of Jesus. Although he was not
among the original twelve apostles, he was a relative
of St. Barnabas, an apostle. Mark is well-known because he wrote one of the four Gospels. That is why
he is called an evangelist, a Gospel writer. Mark's Gospel is short,
but it gives many little details that are not in the other Gospels.
While still young, Mark went with the two great saints, Paul and
Barnabas, on a missionary journey to bring the teachings of Jesus
to new lands. Before the journey was over, though, Mark seems to
have had a disagreement with St. Paul. Mark suddenly returned to
Jerusalem. Paul and Mark later worked out their differences. In
fact, Paul wrote from prison in Rome that Mark came to console
and help him.
Mark also became a beloved disciple of St. Peter, the first pope. St.
Peter called St. Mark "my son." Some think that Peter meant to say
that he had baptized Mark. Mark was consecrated a bishop and
sent to Alexandria, Egypt. There he converted many people. He
worked hard to spread love for Jesus and his Church. It is believed
that he went through long and painful sufferings before he died.
If you gave last year, please consider increasing your gift by 5% this
year. If you did not give last year, would you consider a gift of a
dollar a day ($365)? Gifts of any amount are welcome, and your gift
will make a big impact on many lives!
If you would like to make your gift today, you can go online:
www.seattlearchdiocese.org/donate
For your convenience, there are many ways to give and you have
until April 2016 to fulfill your pledge. Donating online (or through
your pledge envelope) will help us by not having to mail you a follow-up letter.
Thank you very much for your support and participation!
We thank the Facility members at SJOW for their hard work. They
did a wonderful job by clearing the little island in front of the parish
office. They extended it and made it a useful place for parking
spaces. We will have more space to park especially during weekend
Masses and special events.

Stewardship Corner
March 22, 2015 we were able to attend 8am Mass and join in honoring a long time
parishioner Eugene (Gene) Otis for his service to our country as a World War II Veteran,
Gene was able to go to Washington DC through The Puget Sound Honor Flight “One
Last Mission” organization. This organization is not founded by the Federal Government. Private
donations pay the expenses for the servicemen to visit the War Memorials of World War II, Korean, and Vietnam Wars as well as given top priority to most senior hero survivors of World War II
and any veteran with a terminal illness.
Gene was honored at Mass by the Air Force Honor Guardsmen and Fr. Tuan who gave a
wonderful introduction and Gene processed into the church with the guardsmen. A reception was
held in Gene’s honor after Mass in the parish hall where many friends were gathered to honor him.
Gene spoke of his experiences and how at the airport when they arrived in Baltimore
many people clapped as the veterans walked through the airport as well as other places they went.
This is a great way to honor our veterans and we are very proud of Gene and his service.
Gene, as a parishioner of St. John of the Woods parish we would also like to thank you for your
many years of dedicated service to our parish. Thanks to our volunteers for their part in getting
the celebration together for Gene.

tercer domingo de pascua
19 de abril 2015
Queridos Feligreses:
propusieron hace tres anos.
F. Tuan Nguyen, D. Min
