Sixth Sunday of Easter: May 10, 2015 “No one has greater love than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” -John 15:9-17 TODAY AFTER MASS! Pastor Reflection Mother’s Day Corsages We have a unique episode in the Acts of the Apostles today. A whole roomful of people are baptized with the Holy Spirit before they are baptized with water! The verb used—“the Holy Spirit ‘fell’ on them”—is characteristic of the way the Spirit works throughout the book of Acts: powerful and surprising. Though this “baptism” is not the normative way the New Testament describes baptism, it is still a good reminder today that the Holy Spirit is not controlled by whether or not we pour water, but rather that our sacramental signs reveal the presence of the Spirit at work among us. And we have a double reinforcement of how this work is accomplished from a letter and a Gospel bearing John’s name. It is love, selfsacrificing and self-giving love, that manifests the Spirit of Jesus in our midst. It is love that is the greatest of commandments. The Spirit is manifested equally through those who live in that love. Sunday, May 10th “Thanks, Mom, For LIFE!” Suggested Donation: $8 All donations support TulareKings Right to Life and their ongoing pro-life and chastity educational outreaches. Caritas Christi FESTIVAL OF TREES TO LAY DOWN ONE’S LIFE Our readings today turn the Easter timeline a bit upside down. Today’s passage from John’s Gospel comes from the “farewell discourse” of Jesus, in which he speaks of the coming of the Paraclete (whom he bestowed on the disciples on the second Sunday of Easter) and the type of death he must die. It is tempting for us to want to think of all these episodes from the life of Jesus as a narrative biography, but John wants to do something more profound. He wants us to make connections and to reflect more deeply on the wonderful way in which Jesus was a revelation of God the Father. For the early Christian community, it was very important to make connections between the sacrificial death that Christ died and the glory of his resurrection. Our modern minds find it easier to think of the passion of Christ as something that is now past, and his resurrection as the only reality. In truth, it is all one great reality. Caritas Christi Festival of Trees tickets are now on sale, and are going fast! Please contact Carol Serpa at 734-0412 or [email protected] to purchase. Tickets are $25 each or 8 for $200. Festival of Trees August 1, 2015 - 11 am to 3 pm St. Mary’s Parish Hall, 506 N. Garden Hope to see you there! WWW.TCCOV.ORG/EVENTS FOR A FRIEND? To lay down one’s life for a friend may not seem like the greatest love. Isn’t this the same Jesus who said it was more difficult to forgive and love an enemy? If we read on, we hear that Jesus now calls the disciples “friends.” What he is telling them is that they are all “friends” to each other, and that they are “friends” to all who have been chosen by him to be members of his body, the Church. This is not our modern concept of friendship, for these “friends” could possibly be people the disciples did not particularly care for! The greatest love, however, remained to lay down one’s life for their sake, to live in the love begotten by God and that knows God. For us today, our “friends” fill the pews around us on Sunday, they pass us in the aisle at the supermarket, they drive past us on the highway. Would we be truly ready, in love, to lay down our lives for these “friends?” Today’s Readings: Acts 10:25–26, 34–35, 44–48; Ps 98:1–4; 1 Jn 4:7–10; Jn 15:9–17 SERRA CLUB PRESENTS Spring Fling Breakfast Sunday May 17,2015 St. Mary's Parish Center 506 N. garden 7am-noon • $8.00/adults • $5.00/children (5-12) • under 5 -- free Food by Cafe225 Serra Club sponsors priestly vocations Serra members will be selling tickets after all Masses Upcoming & Ongoing Events Sanctuary Flower Dedications ST. Upcoming & Ongoing Events The California Catholic Conference (CCC) is the official voice of the Catholic community in California's public policy arena. Its mission is to advocate with the legislative, administrative and judicial branches of state government for the Catholic Church's public policy agenda and to facilitate common pastoral efforts in the Catholic community. All CLN databases are confidential; your contact information will not be sold or given to any other entity. If you did not sign up for CLN on Life and Dignity Sunday, you can do so anytime by going to the website www.ca.catholic.org. PROMOTION OF HUMAN DIGNITY We advocate for the right of each person, especially children and the elderly, to have access to the basic necessities of life - food, shelter, work, education, healthcare and a safe healthy environment We advocate for policies that will allow those in poverty and the working poor the opportunity to participate within the competitive workforce and become self-sufficient. We oppose unjust discrimination, racism, torture and human trafficking. A PREFERENTIAL OPTION FOR THE POOR “When we are generous in welcoming people and sharing something with them - some food, a place in our home, our time - not only do we no longer remain poor: we are enriched.” -Pope Francis As the largest non-governmental provider of healthcare, education and human services, we draw upon our extensive experience living with and serving those vulnerable people who are working and poor. We are guided by Catholic moral principles: respect for human life and the dignity of each person, the importance of family, the value of work, and a duty to encourage the participation of all in our community life. When the economy fails to generate sufficient jobs, there is a moral obligation to protect the life and dignity of unemployed and underemployed workers and their families. We believe that all persons should take responsibility for themselves and their families and have the opportunity to adequately do so, yet every day more and more people are at risk of falling into poverty. We need to provide services in the area of education and job training - key steps in providing longterm sustainable solutions to help lift people out of poverty. Those who are poor and the “working” poor are already struggling for their daily survival and facing increased risk of homelessness, hunger and illness. Their compelling needs create a priority claim on our consciences, on our common resources and therefore on the choices that elected officials make on our behalf. Even if people can find work, this does not automatically provide an escape from poverty. Declining wages have put safe and affordable housing out of reach for many workers. It is unconscionable that significant numbers of full-time wage earners must live in homeless shelters. Many people also live in extreme poverty facing limited resources and few opportunities for employment. Criminals take advantage of these vulnerable people, offering them a way to escape the harsh realities of their lives. The violence is our communities must end. Human trafficking is a horrific crime against the basic dignity and rights of the person. Pope Francis, along with other religious leaders, signed a declaration to call for an end to slavery by 2020. “The obligation to provide justice for all means that the poor have the single most urgent economic claim on the conscience of the nation” Pope Francis, Economic Justice for All #86 PEARLE ZALUD SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE Scholarship funds are available to parishioners who are currently high school seniors who will be attending college full-time in the fall as well as for parishioners who are continuing full-time college students through the Pearle Zalud Scholarship Fund. Call Florence Evans 734-4807 Upcoming & Ongoing Events Part 5 Pastoral Care of the Sick—Rites for Anointing & Viaticum CELEBRATION OF THE SACRAMENTS: REQUIREMENTS FOR CELEBRATING THE ANNOINTING OF THE SICK The matter proper for the sacrament is olive oil or, according to circumstances, other oil derived from plants. The oil used for anointing the sick must be blessed for this purpose by the bishop or by a priest who has this faculty, either from the law or by special concession of the Apostolic See. The law itself permits the following, besides a bishop, to bless the oil of the sick: a) those whom the law equates with diocesan bishops; b) in case of true necessity, any priest. The oil of the sick is ordinarily blessed by the bishop on Holy Thursday. If a priest, in accord with no. 21b, is to bless the oil during the rite, he may bring the unblessed oil with him, or the family of the sick person may prepare the oil in a suitable vessel. If any of the oil is left after the celebration of the sacrament, it should be absorbed in cotton and burned. If the priest uses oil that has already been blessed (either by the bishop or by a priest), he brings it with him in the vessel in which it is kept. This vessel, made of suitable material, should be clean and should con¬tain sufficient oil (soaked in cotton for convenience). In this case, after celebrating the sacrament the priest returns the vessel to the place where it is kept with proper respect. He should make sure that the oil re¬mains fit for use and should replenish it from time to time, either yearly when the bishop blesses the oil on Holy Thursday or more frequently if necessary. The sick person is anointed on the forehead and on the hands. It is appropriate to divide the sacramental form so that the first part is said while the forehead is anointed, the latter part while the hands are anointed. In case of necessity, however, it is sufficient that a single anointing be given on the forehead or, because of the particular condition of the sick person, on another suitable part of the body, while the whole sac¬ramental form is said. Depending on the culture and traditions of differ¬ent peoples, the number of anointings may be in¬creased and the place of anointing may be changed. Directives on this should be included in the preparation of particular rituals. The following is the sacramental form with which the anointing of the sick is given in the Latin rite: Through this holy anointing may the Lord in his love and mercy help you with the grace of the Holy Spirit. May the Lord who frees you from sin save you and raise you up.
