“This is God’s commandment: that we may believe and love” - 1 John 3:18-24
Pastor Reflection
Few of us, even when we meditate on the image of the vine
and branches, stop to really think about how God “prunes” us. For
some there is the danger of thinking that we are already producing fruit for the kingdom, in deed and truth as John says, perhaps
raising a family, being active in our parish, and so on. But even
those branches which are bearing fruit, the Gospel tells us, can be
pruned to produce even more. Today Saul, freshly “pruned” by his
conversion, arrives in Jerusalem and meets resistance. Since he
had been persecuting Christians, this was only natural. But even
after he is accepted and begins to bear fruit, he meets further
adversity, and his letters are filled with many accounts of how his
trials “pruned” him to produce greater fruit for the kingdom. Like
him, as long as we remain in Christ we will continue to bear fruit
and, when the will of the Father determines it is time to prune us,
the strength of the true vine must enable us to endure it.
WITNESS UNAWARE
The apostle Paul had most likely been martyred by the time
John’s Gospel was in widespread circulation, so it is doubtful that
he was aware of the “vine and branches” discourse we hear today.
Nevertheless, the witness of Paul’s ministry and his fervent missionary dedication to the spread of the gospel make him one of
the most influential figures in Western history. Indeed, there are
some historians who have said that Jesus of Nazareth would not
have become the greatest influence in our culture if it had not
been for the zeal of Paul. This certainly makes him one of the most
“fruitful” branches on the one true vine. His letters are filled with
accounts of his torments, struggles, imprisonments, and his final
trial, but each of these he counts as a “pruning” that will make him
more fruitful still.
THE OTHER BRANCHES
Most of us, when we hear of the suspicious and fearful reception Paul (still called Saul) received from the disciples in Jerusalem,
can understand it perfectly well. He had, after all, participated in
the persecutions of the first Christians, and was present at the
martyrdom of Stephen. He may have been standing off to the side,
but this does not exclude him from responsibility, for he stood by
and did nothing. (We still confess at Mass that we sin by “what we
have failed to do.”) He must have had a certain notoriety among
the members of the Jerusalem Christian community by the time he
arrived there. Luckily for him (and us), Barnabas believed in the
strength of his conversion experience, and had observed his first
bold witness in the name of Jesus. Barnabas was able to convince
the others that, in the words of the second reading, God’s heart is
greater than our own. What is to be learned from this? Perhaps
that those of us who are merely branches attached to the vine
need to be continually aware that the vine is bearing fruit not only
through us, but through those around us as well, and that we
sometimes need to be a bit more open to those who wish to do
nothing else but be fruitful disciples along with us.

The California Catholic Conference (CCC) is the official voice
of the Catholic community in California's public policy arena. Its mission is to advocate with the legislative, administrative
and judicial branches of state government for the Catholic
Church's public policy agenda and to facilitate common pastoral efforts in the Catholic community. The CCC also enables
ecumenical and interfaith dialogue and action. This past weekend, Arch-dioceses and Dioceses throughout the U.S. observed
Life and Dignity Sunday with the opportunity for parishioners to
join the Catholic Legislative Network. We are blessed to have
1182 TCCOV parishioners sign up to be part of the Network.
Together, our voices will be heard as we join with thousands of
our members who are standing up for life and dignity. If you
did not take the opportunity to sign up last weekend, please go
to the website above and do so today. When you join the
Catholic Legislative Network, you:
•
•
•
Receive the free weekly e-newsletter, Public Policy Insights
- you will be up to date on the key public policy issues
happening in California.
You will receive periodic ACTION ALERTS which make it
easy for you to voice your opinion on crucial issues. In less
than a minute your letter will be sent to your elected representative!
You can use the network at any time to easily send e-mails
to your elected representatives.
All CLN databases are confidential; your contact information
will not be sold or given to any other entity.
There are six “Key Issues” affected by legislation that the CCC
seeks to address. Beginning this week, information regarding
each of these issues will be covered in the bulletin. We invite
you to visit the website and discover other ways that you may
keep informed of legislation and the process by which laws are
put into place.
“…It is necessary to raise awareness and form the lay faithful,
especially those engaged in the field of politics, so that they
may…act consistently by talking and collaborating with those
who, in sincerity and intellectual honesty, share – if not the
faith – at least the similar vision of humankind and society
and its ethical consequences.”
Pope Francis
REVERENCE FOR LIFE
“All life has inestimable value even the weakest and most
vulnerable, the sick, the old, the unborn and the poor…
deserve the utmost reverence and respect.” Pope Francis
Because we believe we are created in the image of God, we hold
life to be sacred from conception to natural death. We believe
that we are stewards of this gift of life from a loving God.
We support compassionate and comprehensive end-of-life care.
We advocate for adequate pain control and availability of hospice care. We oppose assisted suicide or euthanasia as unwise
and flawed public policy which ruptures the physician-patient
relationship, puts vulnerable patients, particularly the elderly at
risk of abuse, breaks our bonds of care for each other and validates suicide as a response to personal mental health challenges.
We support programs which offer medical, economic and emotional support for pregnant women and children, so there is no
incentive to abort a child. We advocate for parental notification
for minor abortions, full informed consent and restrictions, regulations and record keeping on abortion practice. Taxpayer funding for abortion should be removed since it coerces us to pay for
a morally wrong personal action. We support adoption as an
alternative to abortion.
We support non-embryonic stem cell research as the only ethical
and efficacious source of treatment for many chronic diseases
and spinal cord injuries. We oppose the production of cloned
embryos - both for research and for reproduction - as it represents the commodification of human life.
We support life imprisonment without parole for those convicted of capital crimes rather than the death penalty. We have the
means to protect ourselves without resorting to state violence.
•
•
•
•
•
We oppose abortion and, until it becomes illegal, we oppose public funding and support restrictions on its practice.
We support patient-focused, quality end-of-life care, responsible patient autonomy and oppose legalizing assisted
suicide.
We support policies and services that assist pregnant women to make life-affirming choices.
We support stem cell research that does not destroy or
clone human embryos.
We advocate for life in prison rather than the use of the
death penalty.

Pastoral Care of the Sick—Rites for Anointing & Viaticum
CELEBRATION OF THE SACRAMENTS
FOR THE SICK AND THE DYING: MINISTER OF THE ANOINTING
OF THE SICK
The priest is the only proper minister of the anointing of the sick.11
This office is ordinarily exercised by bishops, pastors and their assistants, priests who are responsible for the sick or aged in hospitals,
and superiors of clerical religious institutes.12
These ministers have the pastoral responsibility both of preparing
and helping the sick and others who are present, with the assistance
of religious and laity, and of celebrating the sacrament.
The local Ordinary has the responsibility of supervising celebrations
at which sick persons from various parishes or hospitals may come
together to receive the sacrament.
Other priests also confer the sacrament of anointing with the consent of the ministers mentioned in no. 16. Presuming such consent
in case of necessity, a priest need only inform the pastor or hospital
chaplain later.
When two or more priests are present for the anointing of a sick
person, one of them may say the prayers and carry out the anointings, saying the sacra-mental form. The others may take the remaining parts, such as the introductory rites, readings, invocations, or
instructions. Each priest may lay hands on the sick person.

junto a nosotros.
