Magi from the east arrived,
looking for the newborn king of the Jews.
(Matthew 2:1-12)
On this second Sunday after Christmas and the first Sunday of the New Year, the Church celebrates the
feast of the Epiphany. Traditionally, the Epiphany is celebrated on January 6. In many countries
around the world, the Epiphany still is observed on January 6. In Eastern Christian traditions it is also
observed as Christmas. In our country, the bishops decided to assign the observance of the Epiphany to
the second Sunday after Christmas so that it would always be celebrated on Sunday instead of during
the week. This would give the faithful a better opportunity to celebrate this important feast.
What is the Epiphany and why is it so important? The word “epiphany” means “to reveal” or “to
manifest.” In the Christian sense, the Epiphany means that God has revealed His Son to the world and
has manifested Him as the Savior and Light of the world. God has done this in a very special way
through the light of a star and through some very mysterious visitors from the Far East.
The Epiphany is often also referred to as the feast of the Three Kings or the Three Wise Men. The Gospel according to
St. Matthew tells us that Magi from the East arrived in Jerusalem seeking a newly born king. Magi are, by definition,
members of a hereditary priestly class among the ancient Medes and Persians. The light of a great star in the sky guided
their arrival. Being well read and educated, the Magi understood the star’s appearance to signal the birth of a new king
whose coming was foretold in the ancient scriptures.
It is uncertain whether these mysterious visitors from the East were Kings or not. It is also unclear whether their number was
only three, or even whether they were only men. The notion that the Magi were three in number comes from the three gifts
of gold, frankincense and myrrh, which, according to Matthew, they brought to the Child Jesus. The idea that the Magi
were kings comes from the Prophet Isaiah and from Psalm 72, which states, “The Kings of Tarshish and the Isles shall offer
gifts; the kings of Arabia and Seba shall bring tribute. All kings shall pay Him homage, all nations shall serve Him.”
Even though our Christmas decorations show the arrival of the Magi at the manger, it is more likely that they arrived much
later after Jesus’ birth. Matthew says, “on entering the house” the Magi saw the Child with His mother. Joseph certainly
would have found better accommodations for his holy family. Also, because King Herod ordered the massacre of all young
boys up to two years of age in the vicinity of Bethlehem, the Magi more than likely arrived much later after the birth of
Jesus.
What is important about the Epiphany is that it is God’s manifestation of His Son to the entire world. The arrival of the
Magi from the East indicates that God’s promised Messiah was not sent for only a selected few, but rather for all of His
people. Christ has come into the world for the salvation of all people of all times and places. Jesus is indeed the universal
King and all nations shall rightly give Him honor and praise.
According to tradition, packets of incense and chalk are blessed on the feast of the Epiphany. The incense is a reminder of
the gifts of the Magi. The chalk is used to mark the year and the initials of the Magi above the doorway of your home.
C + M + B + 2015 This marking is a sign that your home is a Christian household and that you have the wisdom of the
Three Wise Men, Caspar, Melchior and Baltazar, to follow the light of Christ and His Gospel every day of your lives.
Please take a blessed packet of chalk and incense with you and mark the doorposts of your home today.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for making this Christmas the joyful celebration that it was. Thank
you to all who showed so much kindness, generosity and love to Fr. Wieslaw and me with your many cards, gifts and baked
goods. We very much appreciate you thinking of us during this wonderful time of the year. We promise to keep you all in
our prayers and we hope that this New Year 2015 will be filled with God’s choicest blessings for you and your families!
Fr. Gerry

How to Dispose of Blessed Items
All blessed items should be disposed of in a dignified and reverent
manner. There are two ways to dispose of blessed objects: by
burning; or by burying them in the ground.
Blessed objects made of wood may be burned, while metal, ceramic,
and other non-combustible materials should be buried in the ground.
Blessed objects should never be thrown in the garbage.
Holy water should be put back into the earth, either by watering a plant
in the house or by pouring it into the ground outside. It should not be
poured down the drain.
The most important thing is that these objects be treated with respect
and disposed of in an appropriate manner once they are broken or no
longer of use.

The Church is the new Israel, called to attract all
people to the Lord. We must be “the place where
the child” (Matthew 2:9) is found today. God’s
glory shines through the Church and, despite our
many flaws, we are called to become the “place”
where everyone can find the Lord and “[do] him
homage” (2:11).

PARTNERS IN THE PROMISE
As a society, during these days we can be in something
of a “postpartum” depression. Our celebrations of
Christmas and the New Year are over, and after today
many of us will put away the decorations and the last
visible remnants of the celebrations of the past weeks.
The apostle Paul today uses the expression “partners in
the promise.” This is an uplifting phrase for us to reflect
upon, and to think of as our own calling in these days
following the birth of the Lord. What is this promise?
We can find it in the gifts the magi bring: it is a promise
of being a royal priesthood (gold), a holy nation
(frankincense), a people set apart for self-giving
(myrrh). We find more of the promise in Isaiah—a light
shines upon us! In the psalm we know a promise of a
world of flowering justice, profound peace, the poor rescued, pity for the lowly and the poor. This is the promise; and one of the best ways for us to lift ourselves out
of any possible low spirits we may be suffering is to live
out our partnership in this promise each and every day.
