Huw Walters, Head of Aerospace, Marine and
Defence. UK Government Department for
Business Innovation and Skills
Huw Walters is a Senior Civil Servant in the UK
Government’s Department for Business, Innovation &
Skills, advising Ministers on industrial strategy for the
Aerospace, Marine and Defence sectors. He is the lead official within Government
for the joint Government/industry Aerospace and Defence Growth Partnerships.
He is also the UK Government's Strategic Relationship Manager for a number of
key global companies. Huw is currently on the Boards of the newly-formed UK
Aerospace Technology Institute and the European Transonic Windtunnel.
Before joining the Business department in 2009, Huw had a range of roles within
the UK Ministry of Defence. Most recently, he was the Director responsible for
overseeing the strategy and governance for publicly-owned defence businesses
employing over 6,000 staff. He was the Government’s Non-Executive Director on
the Boards of the Defence Science & Technology Laboratory, the UK Hydrographic
Office and the Oil and Pipelines Agency. He played a leading role in the
restructuring, part-privatisation and stockmarket flotation of the Defence
Evaluation and Research Agency to create a new company (QinetiQ). He has a
background in defence research that includes working on a range of UK/US and
NATO collaborative programmes.
Huw has an MBA from Imperial College, London and a BSc in Psychology from the
University of Wales. He is a Chartered Psychologist and a member of the Institute
of Directors.
