Summer reading 7 HONORS Summer Reading Assignment Students will choose TEN (10) key quotes for EACH novel and explain the quotes in chart format, as demonstrated below. The quotes should span the length of the novel and encompass pertinent content from beginning to end. Students will be creating TWO charts, one for Fahrenheit 451 and one for their choice summer reading novel. Example 1: Quote Analysis In this section, record TEN key quotes that you think are important in regards to the plot, character development or themes of the text. Be sure to set the stage for the quote – meaning indicate who says the quote, to whom, and when. Also, include the correct parenthetical citation after each quote – it should appear as (Author’s Last Name #) – see example below. In this section, you should analyzes these lines and explain WHY these quotes are important – think about what the quote showcases, emphasizes, brings into light, etc. Consider using literary techniques (such as tone, symbolism, characterization, theme, mood, hyperbole, foreshadowing, metaphor, etc.) to justify your opinion. You must also include in the analysis of the quote the line, “This quote is important because…” Example 2: Quote Montag acknowledges that “It was a pleasure to burn” (Bradbury 3). During a conversation with Montag, Clarisse comments “I’m afraid of children my own age. They kill each other” (Bradbury 30). Analysis Bradbury’s use of this opening line grabs the reader’s attention and also reveals key information about the protagonist, Montag. This quote is important because it sets the tone for the rest of the book and the core concept that they burn books in this society. Clarisse represents one of the core problems with their society with these statements; the society is violent and out of control yet she is not like that. This quote is important because it assists in developing the theme that destroying books destroys the society. We need the knowledge contained in books to learn from the past and better humanity.
