Please visit www.hamilton.ca/legionella to review and obtain Cooling Tower Registration Forms and Risk Management Plan Templates. In 2012 an outbreak of Legionella infections linked to cooling towers in Quebec City caused 180 people to become ill, of which 13 people died. In September 2005 an outbreak of Legionella infections linked to a cooling tower in Toronto caused 135 people to become ill, of which 23 people died. In February 2014 the cooling tower owner agreed to accept responsibility for being negligent in the design and maintenance of the cooling system and will pay a $1.2 million class action settlement, plus the class action legal fees of $356,500 and $250,000 to settle past and future medical expenses for class members. Instructions to update registration information by May 1st 2014; 1. Obtain blank Registration Forms at www.hamilton.ca/legionella. 2. Complete the Registration Forms. Use your previous registration forms as a reference. 3. Sign and date Acknowledgement Section 4.
