A more dramatic situation could not be imagined. God, whose presence on Mt. Sinai had caused “thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud on the mountain and a very loud trumpet blast” (Exodus 19:16), had been in a private session with Moses. At the base of the mountain, Israel had abandoned hopes of ever seeing Moses again following his absence of 40 days. To fill the void they commanded Aaron to make them a golden calf. God’s outrage over the scene was heated. Surely Israel was now history. That likely would have been the case were it not for something noted in Psalm 106:23: “Therefore He said He would destroy them – had not Moses, His chosen one, stood in the breach before Him, to turn away His wrath from destroying them.” This Week – “The Bride of Christ” To “stand in the breach” (or “gap” as older translations have it) has become an image of great importance. In Ezekiel 22:30 God looked back to that scene on Mt. Sinai and applied the truth to the crisis of Judah, just before their conquest by Babylon: “And I sought for a man among them who should build up the wall and stand in the breach before me for the land, that I should not destroy it, but I found none.” A gap in the wall means potential danger, just as a hole in the roof means trouble ahead for the homeowner. Someone is needed to plug that hole; a servant must step forward to fortify the “wall”. We propose to apply that image to Central as servants are needed – now – to step forward. In the past several months we have seen several families move due to job transfers or to be nearer to family. While all of these members are valuable, some were especially active in the work of this congregation. Now that they’re gone, who will step forward? Mary and Mike Sheridan will be leaving our area in a very short time. As an elder, Mike’s contributions have been invaluable and his friendship and example have been strengthening. Mary, too, has found many areas in which to use her considerable skills, and many have benefitted from her service. We are going to miss the Sheridans! We know there are yet many among us at Central who have great talents and winning personalities – potential leaders. You may be one of those. But talent benefits no one if it is not used. Yes, there are gaps in our walls from valuable servants leaving us. Do you hear the call of the Lord? Will you be one who steps forward to fill the breach? 1/11/15: Let’s pray for: Kyle Higginbotham, Lasik surgery last Wednesday; Allen Jackson; Kerry Hutchinson; Charlie Hartman; Joyce Hall; Sue Neeley; Buddy Barefield; Elayne Trent; Becky Smith; Mary Nell Lilly; Arlene Kellum; Troy Wright; Ken Lutterman; Isaac Vance; Frank Chapo; Robin Wishon; Glenn Blacklidge; Doug Grindstaff; Lorene Arrowood; Teresa Guinn; Betty Hamilton; Mike Lyons; Gay Enkema; Karen Stevens. We are all hoping to spend eternity together, so let’s continue to build our friendships now! LET’S TALK ABOUT IT! Hands If you walk into my office, one of the things you will notice on my wall is a close-up picture of the Sistine Chapel painting. Have you noticed the hands? One hand is reaching out fully in order to touch the other; this is God’s hand. One hand is limp and not really trying; this is man’s hand. Hands can be used for evil or good. Hands can hurt or heal. My question is, “What are you doing with YOUR hands?” Reach out to God and use them for HIS glory. January 11, 2015 Contact Doug Booton if unable to serve Sunday Morning: Welcome: L.A.
