Waiwhakareke Natural
Heritage Park
Public Open Day
th
Sunday 9 November 3-6pm
Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park will be hosting a 10th
birthday open day to celebrate the ground-breaking
conservation work at this site. The celebration will include
a range of activities including park tours, science sessions,
plant sales, guest speakers, outdoor adventures, face
painting and an art station. Everyone is welcome for a
FREE fun afternoon out to explore the park and enjoy lots
of fun activities! Situated opposite Hamilton Zoo.
Thank you to the many schools from throughout New
Zealand who submitted entries for the Zoo
Enrichment Challenge this year.
This year we introduced the 3 different age categories
and entries were submitted electronically. There
were some really impressive ideas that I am sure
would challenge our red pandas and capuchins.
The process students had taken to come up with their
final design impressed the judges. Students looked at
the natural behaviour of the animals, what they ate
and what was already included in their enclosures.
They took this information to find ways to enrich
these animals even further both physically and
mentally.
A huge thank you to Panasonic New Zealand for
sponsoring the following prizes in each category.

Animal Updates
Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park
Waiwhakareke is a large scale restoration
project covering around 60 hectares on the north-west
edge of Hamilton, next to Hamilton Zoo. The project
aims to recreate an example of the Hamilton Basin’s
previously rich ecological diversity and provides an
opportunity for students to learn about native plants
and animals.
This unique experience hosted by Hamilton Zoo engaged
240 students in talks and activities run by various
environmental organisations. These included; Waikato
Biodiversity Forum, Hamilton City Council, , Forestflora,
NIWA, Landcare Research, Department of Conservation,
Hamilton Museum/Project Echo, National Bee
Association, Enviroschools and Hamilton Zoo.
Speakers were placed around Waiwhakareke and
students learnt how they can contribute to the
protection of our ecosystem. Speakers had imaginative
ways to engage the students, whether it be an
adventure through the bush, planting their own native
seedling, indentifying invertebrates they found in the
trees and playing bat echo games. Students got to see
eels, koura, bees and reptiles.
Despite the weather this was a very successful day. It
would not of been possible without the help of our
speakers who are full of so much knowledge. I would
also like to acknowledge our sponsors of the day; Tip
Top, For Every One and Prolife Foods/Mother Earth.
Hamilton Zoo will be holding similar events in the
future. For more details, and other experiences
available for your students at Hamilton Zoo and
Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Park go to
www.hamiltonzoo.co.nz or contact
[email protected].

Jane Goodall Institution
Upcoming Environmental
Dates
Save Kiwi Month - October
Let our kids Grow Up with Kiwi – Help save kiwi for the
next generation. For more information and great kiwi
resources go to www.kiwisforkiwi.org.nz.
In July 1960, Jane Goodall began her landmark study of
chimpanzee behaviour in what is now Tanzania. Her work
become the foundation of future primatological research and
redefine the relationship between humans and animals.
In 1977, she established the Jane Goodall Institute.Rampant
deforestation and its effects on the chimpanzees in Africa in
the 1980s changed her focus from research to conservation.
JGI is widely recognised for innovative, community-centred
conservation and development programs in Africa, and Roots
& Shoots, the global environmental and humanitarian youth
program.
Hamilton Zoo supports JGI by purchasing Ugandan paper
bead jewellery from the Institute. This helps provide an
alternative income for families and reduces the poaching of
Chimpanzees.
Dr. Jane Goodall’s vision and one we support is placing the
power and responsibility for creating community-based
solutions to big challenges in the hands of the young people.
YOU CAN HELP by enabling your students to develop their
own projects that address animals, people, or the
environment, based on what they’re most passionate about
and the issues they believe need to be addressed, either
locally or globally.
Raising awareness is a powerful means of creating change!
Practical steps students can become involved in to create
change to help chimpanzees in the wild are:
- Recycle mobile phones. Mobile phones contain the metal
coltan, mined from Chimpanzee habitat.
- Become informed consumers – buy forest friendly
products.
- Support conservation organizations like JGI working with
local communities in countries with chimpanzees as well
as supporting the people themselves.
How can Hamilton Zoo support you? Working with a Zoo
educator we can tailor your visit to Hamilton Zoo to enhance
student learning through classroom sessions and keeper
talks. Adding a chimpanzee encounter to your visit will
further enrich your students.
Visit our website for more information and web links to
resources.

Hamilton Zoo is a living classroom; the learning possibilities are endless –
From writing, design and mathematics to conservation and sustainability.
A zoo visit can be incorporated into your unit at various times:
at the start – to generate interest, questions and thinking
in the middle – to further explore facts, ideas and answers
at the end – to reinforce learning
Even if your visit is the culmination of an entire unit of study, the experience will inevitably generate plenty
of discussion and reflection.
Teachers bring their students to Hamilton Zoo for very different reasons, including:
Science – classification, adaptations
Social Sciences – habitats, careers
Conservation - native flora and fauna, endangered species
English - writing, research, comprehension
The Arts - visual arts, photography
Marketing, tourism and enterprise
Biology - primate evolution, animal behaviour
Technology - animal enrichment, enclosure design
Mathematics - problem solving, statistics, orienteering
Sensory and Language experience
Recognition of achievement.
Select from a wide range of potential contexts as the focus of the learning.
Talk with our Education team to plan your
LEOTC experience.
