A good entry met with spirited bidding from a packed sale ring, with plenty of confidence from over winterers and shortterm finishers alike. A cracking show of cattle for Paul & Ivor Bragg of Clyst St George saw a 26 month old Simmental
steer fetch top price of the day of £1320 with a slightly younger Simmental steer at £1240 and a pen of four smart
Simmental and Charolais steers at £1155. Gerald Burrow of Morchard Bishop saw a superb 22 month old Limousin steer
race away to £1280 with others at £1235 and £1110. A superb 17 month old British Blue steer from Steven & Susan Sallis
of Jacobstowe reached £1140 and a pen of four grand Hereford bullocks from Claire MacDonald of Okehampton
reached £1100. Well farmed Aberdeen Angus off the same farm at £1065 and £1040. A super pen of six Aberdeen Angus
and South Devon steers from Dave Luckett of Ivybridge reached £1100 whilst six super 22 month old Hereford steers
for David Colwill of North Tamerton reached £1035 and Geoff Harvey of Bovey Tracey saw £1030 for a three-quarter
meat Limousin steer. A cracking 19 month Limousin steer for Gerald Vallance of Newton Abbot climbed to £1020 whilst
the heifer section was topped by Dave Luckett when his super 27 month South Devon heifers fetched £1010 followed
closely by a 23 month old Limousin heifer for Gerald Burrow at £1000. A pen of four well-bred Aberdeen Angus x
heifers for Trevor Bailey of Lympstone reached £990 with others from the same farm at £930, a similar price was
obtained by Gerald Vallance with a 19 month old Limousin heifer. Younger cattle were in keen demand with 15 month
old Hereford steers from Gerald Burrough at £975 and 11 month old Simmentals from the same farm at £880 whilst
KWG Clapp of Newton Abbot saw £970 for some well-presented 13 month old Hereford steers and similar aged heifers
at £720 a-piece. Keg and Kath Hoskin of Christow claimed £955 with the pick of their smart 12 month old Simmental
steers whilst Kevin Clarke of Moretonhampstead had £930 for a 15 month old Charolais steer and David & Justine
Colton of Princetown saw £825 for a grand pen of 10 month old Limousin steers.

Checks are increasingly being carried out at the point of slaughter to confirm ‘Named Sire’ details are correct
and in some cases DNA Testing is used.
It is vital that any ‘Named Sire’ is:
a) Registered Pedigree
b) Written clearly on an entry form
‘IF IN DOUBT LEAVE IT OUT!’
There may be significant financial penalties.

£110 for Roy Collins of Honiton.

An excellent autumn entry of stirks topped at £775 for a pair of smart 13 month old South Devon steers from Steve
Arrowsmith-Brown of Postbridge, his heifers of the same good breeding sold well at £610. 13 month old Limousin steers
from Tony Mears of Chagford rose to £740 as younger 8 month sorts of the same breed were knocked down at £690
for Richard and Jill Persey of Blackborough. Mark Dann of Modbury followed up last week’s good entry of 9 month old
Limousin steers, with bunches to £665 and £640 as 7 month old bullocks of the same breed sold to £650 for Robert and
William Reddaway of South Tawton. Best heifers made to £620 for Michael and Janet Folland of Winkleigh with a
Limousin as Charolais’ females of 13 months of age ran to £590 for Derek Burrough of Yarcombe. 5 month old Limousin
heifers sold to £520 for Richard and Jill Persey and Blue Grey’s hit £510 for Michael Reddaway of Sampford Courtenay.

A big entry of lamb met a varied trade, bigger, better end,
Farm Assured lamb met plenty of trade, topping at £67 & £64
twice for shorn Suffolk and Charollais crosses from Phil Squire of Holbeton, £66.50 and three pens at £60 for Messrs
Cocks & Child of Rackenford, and £65, £64, £62 (x2) & £61 for Stuart Crang of Thorverton. Suffolk cross lambs maintain
their trade regardless of size/condition, reaching £62 & £61.50 for the Jordan family of Chagford and £61.50 for Robert
Dadd of Bovey Tracey. Other well covered Charollais cross sorts to £61 for Jon Ranjit of Ipplepen and Paul Rowden of
Blackawton while Dave Webber of Umberleigh sold his three pens at £60, as did Graham Heal of Umberleigh and Paul
Vanstone of Bratton Clovelly with their best. Smaller, leaner or indifferently bred sorts sold at a lower level with many in
the early to mid £40s, looking £8-£10 less on the week. Average of £52.57 is back £3.10 on last Friday.

of Withleigh, more Charollais shearlings at £180 (x2) for Roy Harvey of Harbetonford and Leonard Reed of Nomansland
sold his Suffolk lambs to £170 (x4) and £155 (x4).

A good entry of pigs saw the sows in short supply and selling to a top call of £175 on behalf of Messrs Tope & Son of
Blackawton with others from the same farm at £172 & £160. Messrs Ward of Iddesleigh saw their best at £135 with
medium weights at £120. A useful entry of prime pigs saw a stronger trade with Colin Gibbins of Feniton taking the top

£129. A big entry of store pigs sold to a superb trade with Andrew Freemantle of Kenniford topping the day at £70 for
the pick of his twenty-five 10 week old gilts. Others from the same farm at £55 & £53 with the pick of the boars from
Messrs Freemantle at £50. Messrs Hornby from Newton Abbot enjoyed a great day with the best of their line up at £60
and the best of the baby slip pigs at £28 from Messrs Jury also from Newton Abbot.

A large entry for our monthly dairy sale saw a decent crowd of buyers around the ring and a very satisfactory trade was
seen although perhaps the best quality would have looked good value compared to the second. Top of the day was £2000
which was achieved twice, first to do it was a cracking heifer from Derek Pyle of Clyst Honiton who sold “Hemburyfort
Norah Jane 12” a heifer by Aintree Prudent. Derek also sold two other heifers at £1920 & £1880. Westdown Farms
continue their dispersal and sold there 23 month old heifers well at £2000 and £1850. No first quality cows forward but
a lovely consignment of Jersey cross cows from Dean James of Bridestowe sold very well to a top of £1580 with others
to £1550 & £1520. In Calf Heifers sold to a selective trade and toped at £1400 for Mr MW Churchill of Aylesbeare who
also sold others to £1380 twice. Keith Pook of Paington sold a smart in calf heifer at £1380. Messrs WG & M Down of
Crediton sold the final portion of youngstock from their Tweenmoors herd and saw their in calf heifers top at £1400
with others to £1300. The same vendors sold a super consignment of bulling heifers which sold exceptionally well
topping at £960 x 3 with others to £940 x 5 and £930 x 5. Westdown Farms of Totnes sold a consignment of more
Friesian type bulling heifers which sold very well to £840 x 4 and £810 x 4. A consignment of British Friesian yearlings
sold to £450 for Derek Burrough of Yarcombe. Heifer calves sold well to £330 x 3 for Messrs WG & M Down of
Crediton and £300 x 2 for Mr G Davis of Tiverton.
The Golden Opportunity Sale of Pedigree Jerseys
A quality entry of 40 Pedigree Jerseys for our Annual Golden Opportunity sale saw great demand and a flying trade!
Fresh milk sold to an exceptional trade and many more could have sold to advantage. Top of the day was £1720 for
“Whitenhill Beechnuts Hilly” a super fresh calved heifer by Whitenhill Bigshows Beechnut from Bruce, Jenny & Jess
Ravenhill-White of Umberleigh, she sold to Messrs Stevens Bros of Honiton who are establishing a new herd. The same
vendor also sold others to £1620 for a heifer by the same sire and £1300 twice for heifers by Beechnut and New Zealand
sire Hillstar Maungas Jono. Messrs MS Ashton & Sons of Torrington sold a consignment of 15 Cows which were calving
outside of their Autumn calving block, they sold exceptionally well and attracted great interest topping at £1420 for
“Morebridge Legacys Shingle GP82” a second calver by Hollylane Lilibets Legacy, she was due in April to the British Blue
and sold to Messrs Spiller of Honiton. At £1400 was another Legacy daughter which sold due in February to the same
buyer. The same vendors sold January calving cows to £1350 & £1300 and their consignment averaged well at £1130. In
Calf heifers topped at £1000 for a November calving heifer by New Zealand sire Greenile Maun Impish from Bruce, Jenny
& Jess Ravenhill-White. A quality consignment of yearlings and calves from the Glanmor herd of Daffyd & Helen Cox of
Carmarthen sold very well with great interest in every lot. The top of their smart bunch sold at £860 for “Glanmor
Perfector Rebel” a November born heifer by Shellen Perfecter out of an EX90 Valleystream Julian cow, she sold to James
Warren of Penzance for his Cardinney herd. Close behind at £800 was “Glanmor Million Pound” a January born calf by
Select Million who sold with 4 generations of VG & EX dams behind her and she sold to new enthusiast and breeder Pam
Coryn of Padstow. “Glanmor Exactly Pudding” by Bridon Exactly sold with 4 generations of VG & EX behind her to Alex
& Claire Wilson-North of Chulmleigh. The Jersey sale finished well with a super twelve month old bull “Whitenhill On
The Moneys Windigo” by Hometown On The Money out of the renowned Win family from the Ravenhill-White’s, he
sold at £1000 to the Evans family of Carmarthen for their Nicel herd. A great day for the breed as we continue to see
strong interest and the breed go from strength to strength!

Vacancies at Holsworthy Livestock Market
Receptionist/Sales Machinery Coordinator
We require a full time receptionist at the new Holsworthy Livestock Market to answer calls alongside our existing
receptionist. In addition the successful candidate will coordinate the machinery and heritage department sales. Likely
duties will include organising the sales with the auctioneers, preparing the catalogues for sale, lotting the items and
assisting on the sale day. The successful candidate will be bright, cheerful, willing to help and quick to learn.
Applicants should possess excellent customer service skills, be organised and computer literate. A background
knowledge in agriculture is an advantage but not essential.
Working Hours: Monday to Friday 8.30am till 5.15pm. Additional hours for some Saturdays sales will also be
required.
Saturday Market Accounts Clerk
We are currently recruiting a Saturday Market Accounts Clerk to assist in the livestock market at Holsworthy and
various other sites including on farm sales. Applicants must be computer literate, possess the ability to work under
pressure and have a full UK driving licence and own transport.
Working Hours: This is a zero hour contract and the successful applicant must be available to work on Saturdays.
Additional midweek hours maybe supplied.
Market Wash Down Cleaners
We are looking for a team of Market Wash Down Cleaners to washout the new Holsworthy Livestock Market after
each sale.
Working Hours: This is a zero hour contract with anticipated start time on Wednesdays of 1pm with a flexible
finish time depending on when the market is cleaned throughout (anticipated approximately 6 hours). There is also
the possibility of additional hours on Thursdays and additional market sales.
