Dear All
This year once again we are celebrating Africa Week in school, which embraces a
range of events including sponsored events, visiting speakers, poetry readings, music
and dance performances. The concerts and Swing Night showcase some excellent
performances from many of our talented pupils. We are grateful to everyone who
has helped and organised the events and to the Mayor and Kenilworth Uyogo
Friendship Link, in addition to other visiting speakers for helping to raise the profile of
this important event in school and for making it the great success that it has become.
It is always worth remembering the purpose of Africa Week, as we have been
celebrating it every year for the last 10 years at around this time. It is the largest
fundraising event for charity that we organise in the year. All money raised during
the week goes to support underprivileged children in Uyogo, as many of them are
deprived of the basics such as clean water, electricity, fresh produce and their local
school provides only very basic facilities and little opportunity for young people to
achieve success. It is always a wakeup call to us in the modern industrialised world to
remember how privileged we are in this country to have the opportunities that we
have and these should never be taken for granted.
With regard to fundraising for Africa Week, I would like to thank all students for
everything that they have achieved this week. I would also like to mention the
achievements of James Kelly who has singlehandedly raised over £1,000 for the
British Heart Foundation, through a sponsored event.
We are developing a database of parental contacts to support our sixth form students
with interviews for university and employment. If any parents have any specific
expertise and in particular, knowledge and experience of the interviewing process for
Oxbridge candidates, we would be interested to hear from you. Please contact Mr
Mummery or Dr Parsons in the Sixth Form for further information.
In the first week after half term, our Year 11s will have mock examinations for their
GCSEs in all subjects. As we wish this to be as close to the real experience as possible
in the summer term, students will have their mock results issued to them in one
envelope with grades listed in all subjects.
We offer varied and rich provision for the most able students here, both inside and
outside the classroom. Coming up in the near future, is the engineering project in
Science in association with Jaguar Landrover, our regular Maths Challenges and the
Alan Turing Computer Science Cryptography Competition in honour of the renowned
mathematician and computer scientist. As with SEN groups, our most able students
also achieve very positive outcomes at all key stages.
In this edition of the
newsletter, there is a short article and link to GIFT, an association offering holiday
courses for very able students across various subjects.
I would like to wish everybody a safe and restful half term break.
Yours sincerely
H.H.S. Abbott

Y10 SKI TRIP (for current Y9s)
All the games were very closely contested with some outstanding
performances from Dan Cochrane Year 10, Dan Haggerty Year 7,
and Amy Rogers Year 7.
The letters are now available for current
Year 9s who wish to apply for a place on
Year 10s ski trip to Italy in 2015. There
are 70 places on offer and because the
trip takes place partly during term time
(the first week back after Christmas) the
selection will based on behaviour at
school - full details of this can be found
in the letter.
Mr Lockren.
Y9 OPTIONS
Tewkesbury fielded a very strong team, they won the boys
competition last year many of their team were much older than
our students.
The challenging play was good experience for our students and
puts us in good stead for the future. Mr Flowers
Thank you to all Year 9s who met the
deadline for returning their option
forms. I am working through the
requests and Mr Snape, Mr Bennett and
I will be seeing a number of students
over the next couple of weeks where
options don't quite fit. If you have not
heard anything by Friday 14th March,
you can assume your choices are fine.
Final confirmations will be given shortly
after that.

Holiday Courses
As well as attending workshops and revision lessons in school during holiday times (see the newsletter from last
week), from time to time our students attend other holiday courses and residential workshops. Several students have
in the past been involved in courses run by GIFT, and have commented favourably on their outcomes.
“GIFT is a company that grew out of a history of over 30 years of continuous provision for the Exceptionally Able,
Gifted and Talented child. It is now a specialist consultancy which runs both residential and non-residential courses for
gifted children of all ages with a unique resource base of specialists providing over four hundred different extension
courses for every imaginable discipline from Archaeology to Zoophysics.
GIFT runs age-specific residential and non-residential courses for school students. We work in small groups with a
graduate/post-graduate expert lecturer in the field. There is plenty of discussion, individual attention, opportunity to
go off at tangents, depth and breadth of learning at the highest level, truth, and networking with like-minded kindred
spirits. Pleasure and enjoyment come out of this mixture and out of that come relaxation and equanimity.”

Outstanding Sports Leaders
Our Young Leaders were a credit to the school at the recent School Games Swimming Gala at Warwick University.
Their official duties included time keeping and allocation of finishing places. They were specifically invited to
perform these duties by the Central Warwickshire School Games organiser due to their excellent leadership skills
The photograph shows from left to right:
Jamie Roote, Max Dumper, Samantha Salter, Robert
Poulter, Harry Davey, Matthew Coleman and Jack
Knight.
Kenilworth School students competed in the
competition and we are still awaiting the final
results.
We will report further after half term.
Money found on Lower Playground
The World Challenge Parents' Information Evening, on
Wednesday 26th February at 7pm, previously advertised
as being in Upper Hall has been relocated to the Sixth
Form Gym, at 7pm.
If you have lost some money please see
Mrs Renshaw at Main Reception.
Kenilworth School Sixth Form Team Maths Challenge
Nine teams of 4 competed in our Annual Team Mathematics Challenge on Thursday 13th
February. Each team consisted of a maximum of 2 Year 13 students. The rounds consisted of a
team problem solving round, a constructing origami round and a fast paced relay round. At the
end of a close contest, by a margin of one point, the team pictured above (Aine Bennett, Connor
Bennett, Tom Pollard and Camille Hnat) emerged victorious.
The Mathematics Department would like to congratulate them, and all the talented
mathematicians who took part. We hope they enjoy reading their copies of Alex's Adventures in
Numberland.
AFRICA WEEK A GREAT SUCCESS
There will be a full report in the newsletter after half term.
