"At the end of the Autumn term, our BTEC Level 3
Applied Science students were offered a rare visit to
see the workings behind the scenes at the Leicester
Royal Infirmary Radiology departments. They were
fortunate enough to visit the X-ray, MRI and CT
departments, talking to technicians and specialists
about their jobs and the workings of the department.
This valuable experience has resulted in outstanding
results for the assignments that followed and gave
our students the first hand experiences that BTEC
studies support. Many thanks to the Departments
that were so helpful and accommodating to us."

Year 10 - Work Experience
News from Science…
We have strong links across the county with universities and
teaching schools who set up places for students to be able to
train to teach.
Sam Edwards from Loughborough University and Victoria
Procter from Leicester University have now just completed their
Phase 1 placements in the PE and Social Sciences Faculty
respectively. Both showed potential of being excellent teachers
and secured good passes in their assessments. They now move
on to their next placements at another school – we wish them
well in their future careers.
We now welcome Rahul Popat to the Science Faculty, he will be
with us for the new few weeks.

Heads up...
As January comes to a close finally it’s time for the days to start getting longer. I can already see it
getting brighter at Guthlaxton College each day.
I am really proud to say that our students are doing extremely well. How do I know?
We had it confirmed this month after a visit from an external inspector. She quoted in her report that
‘the college was seen as welcoming and safe. This was felt to be particularly important by the students
when they started, they appreciated the support of their 6th form mentors.”
I think you will agree that is very positive feedback indeed.
Our vertical tutor groups certainly play such a big part in making new students feel right at home and it’s
a credit to our Sixth Formers that they play such an important role in the cohesion of our college.
On another note the rehearsals are well underway for the annual college musical, which this year is ‘In the
Heights’. This is a new musical to Guthlaxton and it looks so vibrant. Tickets are available now so I hope
to see you there!
I am proud to be part of this great college community where our students thrive and, by working together,
we make the most of our talents and opportunities.
May 2014 be a good year for us all.

“In the penultimate week before Christmas, the Science Department took 90
Year 10 students and 10 Year 13 students
to the London Science and Natural
History Museums.
This was a wonderful day out and an
opportunity to see the displays that enrich
our Science curriculum.
Year 13 took the opportunity to soak up
the Science and gather ideas about their
final research projects.
After a day of exhibits we took to the ice
with almost everyone enjoying the
atmosphere created by the ice-rink and
Christmas lights.
A big thank you to all involved in the
planning and to the pupils for being such
good representatives for
Guthlaxton College.”

Year 10 Boys into last 16 of the ESFA Schools
National Cup
What an outstanding and thoroughly deserved
progression for Guthlaxton College’s under 15 Football
Team, who have secured a place in the last 16 schools in
the country. The progression into round 7 came from a
team performance and a dominant display over Caroline
Chisholm School from Northampton.
The first half was a close affair, with both sides trading
shots and keeping both goal keepers busy. The opening
chance for Guthlaxton came just before half time when
Joe May delivered a pinpoint free kick into the area for
Connor Pawley to toe home.
The boys showed determination and met the half time
break leading 1-0. Buoyed by a powerful speech from
coaches, Mr Black and Mr Baldwin, the team continued to
dominate in the second half.
Substitutions were busy once they joined the game and
proved the team cohesion was again outstanding,
leading to the second Guthlaxton goal. A set piece was
headed back across the goal area for Harry Murtha to put
the team two goals clear and the game out of sight for the
travelling opponents
We celebrated 25 Years of the Clothes Show!
This year celebrated 25 years of the Clothes Show Live
and a group of Years 10, 11, 12 & 13 Art & Textiles
students had the chance to visit the NEC and discover a
range of exhibits & demonstrations designed to “inspire,
excite and educate”.
There were many exciting moments from watching fashion
designer Zandra Rhodes CBE and fashion Journalist
Caryn Franklin MBE introducing and judging a graduate
competition, to members of the public having a go at their
best catwalk strut!
The show ended with an energetic catwalk show
introduced by fashion designer Henry Holland.
A great through ball from Rob Morgan found
Stefan Bjelic, Oliver Dovey picked up his cross
and tapped the ball into the empty net.
Robert Smyth Academy started to get more into
the game during the second half and forced a
number of chances of their own but with 20
minutes to go the introduction of Sam Hollis
seemed to turn the game for the Guthlaxton
team.
Eventually a well worked corner saw Rob Morgan
squeeze his shot into the bottom corner of the
net. Robert Smyth continued to add pressure
though and with 5 minutes left on the clock,
scored a goal to set up a tense finish. With the
time running down, Guthlaxton College Captain,
Will Highland, played a ball through to Stefan
Bjelic, who impressively chipped over the keeper,
ran around him and tapped the ball into the
empty net to seal the victory.
